A Message From Our PTA President,
Katie Zelhart, [email protected]
Welcome, Riviera Families!
My name is Katie Zelhart, and I am the Riviera PTA President this year. I have three kids…a 1st
and 4th grader at Riviera, and a 6th grader at Richardson Middle School. Riviera has been my
second home since 2012. I took a two-year hiatus as my husband’s job relocated our family to
China. Our time abroad was a fascinating experience we will always cherish. I was born and
raised in the South Bay and am a former Roadrunner. Riviera is an amazing community school
and holds a very special place in my heart.
My advice to you is get involved as much as you can – come to the class parties, volunteer in your
child’s classroom, attend PTA events. and take pictures! This time in elementary school is the
sweetest time there is and you will want to be a part of it.
This newsletter will be sent home with the youngest sibling every month, one per family. It will be
loaded with information regarding school activities. This newsletter, along with the weekly eBlast,
are the primary ways in which we, the PTA, will communicate with you. If you are not already re-
ceiving the eBlast, please go to www.riviearelementary.com and click on the Eblast link. We will
not flood your inbox – that’s a promise!
While most of you were maximizing the last days of summer fun, the PTA was kicking into gear
with the Kinder Playdate. Thank you to all those who helped welcome our kinder families at this
annual event on Thursday, August 30. It was a huge success and those who attended got first
glimpse of our new Spirit Wear and Roadrunner mascot. Your kids are going to love the new tie
dyed T’s! The rest of the grades kicked off the year with our annual Back to School Expo. Chairs,
Katie and Michael Pandolfo, organized a fun, informative event that got us ready to hit the ground
running for the first day of school.
Hopefully you were able to take advantage of the Annual Giving Back to School Sale, which of-
fered one PTA membership, one grade level T-shirt, one emergency pack, a PTA garden flag, and
car magnet all for just $365 per student. This is the dollar amount we’ve budgeted per child that
we need to accomplish all of our goals next year. If you missed this sale at the Expo, don’t worry,
this SUPER SALE will also be offered one last time at Back to School Night on Thursday,
September 20 (for kinder families) and September 27 (grades 1-5).
The reading fun begins at Riviera with our Fall Book Fair on Monday, September 24 and will
continue for the entire week. Please stop by before or after school all week, or on September 27
while you’re at Back to School Night. Thank you to Chair, Cecile Namer and Co-Chair
Magalie Busch, for putting together the event.
The PTA is always working to make Riviera an extra special school, and we need all your help.
Please email me if you want to discuss ways to become involved. I’m looking forward to an
amazingly awesome year!

September 2018 2 RIVIERA REVIEW
I would like to welcome our students, parents, and staff back to school. This is my 16th year as Principal @ Riviera and it is a gift to work with an amazing staff, parents, and community. To date, Riviera welcomed 665 students back to school and 92 employees on staff. The school year is off to a great start and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to make the 2018-2019 school year a great success.
Riviera’s new Science Lab will be opening soon. Thank you to TUSD’s Science Resource Teachers, Amy Argento and Marissa Stillitano, and awesome parent volunteers for setting up $41,000 in equipment last week. Work orders are in to hang a TV, maps, goggle cleanser, and to hook up the Science Lab refrigerator.
Riviera is looking for a handy person to put a large telescope, garden shed, and storage cart together. Email me at [email protected] if you can assist with assembly of this equipment. Be sure to visit the Science Lab on Back To School Night on September 27!
Riviera needs three parent/community members to join Riviera’s School Site Council. School Site Council is comprised of staff, parents, and community members who work together to oversee school goals and input into Riviera’s Single Plan for Student Achieve-ment, categorical budget implementation, and school programs. Join me, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Hicks, Mr. Musick, Ms. Kirk, and parent representatives Kristen Kroft and Janine Van Poppelen on the SSC team this year!
The SSC will meet six times this school year on September 24, October 15, January 28, February 25, March 25, and April 29 at 3:30 in the Riviera office. If you are interested in joining SSC, please email me and plan to attend the first SSC meeting on September 25. SSC is a great way to become involved and learn all about Riviera school.
Torrance Unified School District Categorical Budgets provide the following funding to our school for the 2018-2019 school year. SSC, English Language Multicultural Advisory Committee, staff, and stakeholder input will determine best use of the following funds:
Look for the following optional after school Enrichment Classes that are coming soon… Mondays - Watch Me Draw/Sculpt, Empower Youth Sports Tuesdays - Chess Tutors Wednesdays - Advantage Parkour, Parker Anderson Marine Biology, Novo Yoga Thursdays - Watch Me Draw/Sculpt, Fantasia Family Theater Musical Production of Madagascar Friday - Art To Grow On

Hi! I’m Rivie, your new
Riviera Roadrunner
mascot! How many
times can you find me
hiding in this
newsletter?
Rivie was designed by South High School senior, Isaac Hull, who used a picture of the Roadrunner to create our own image of Rivie holding a surfboard and giving the “shaka” hand signal. It is a great way to represent our beach community. Isaac is an amazing aspiring artist, and his brother is Riviera 3rd grader, Koa Demaree-Hull! Look for Rivie each month wearing different clothes!

We are excited to kick off another amazing year for the Green Team!
Hopefully at the Back to School Expo, you had a chance to support the
Green Team by buying some reusable snack pouches. They are
handmade by Riviera parents and will save you money on ziplock bags!
We will be selling more snack pouches after school on Wednesday, 9/12.
Let us know if you’d still like to purchase yours!
Please volunteer this
year to be a Green
Team docent for your
child’s classroom!
It's an easy way to share your love for
the environment.
Green Team docents help to organize
parents to volunteer for the sorting
station at Riviera's lunch hour.
For more information, contact
Cecile Namer at: [email protected].
Plant a seed with the Riviera
