ENDEAVOUR
Term 3 Week 8 14th September 2018
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to all of the parents and carers who have already
completed the Tell Them From Me Parent Survey. Mrs Williams
and Mr Boatfield have worked hard to plan and deliver this
survey and I thank them for their efforts. The results of this
survey will help us to improve aspects of our service delivery
and they will be instrumental in helping us move ahead with
our strategic directions; 1. Excellence, 2. Equity and
Engagement and 3. Innovation. If you have not completed
the survey yet, please click on the link below and follow the
directions. The more input we have from our parents and
carers, the better.

Our Year 6 debating team made it to the finals of the
Premier’s Debating Competition. I am so proud of these
students and I know that Mr Boyd feels exactly the same way.
Today their debate was about the topic “Children should be
paid when their work improves’. Our team was affirmative.
Despite their best efforts, our team was pipped at the post by
Raymond Terrace Public School. Unfortunately, our team will
not progress further in the competition. I would like to thank
our wonderful debating team and Mr Boyd for their hard work
and enthusiasm and congratulate them on reaching the
finals.
Preparations are underway for class planning for 2019. If you
know of someone who is wanting to enrol their child/ren at
our school, could you please encourage them to contact our
friendly administration staff for an information pack. Similarly, if
you no longer require a position at our school for 2019, please
advise our administration staff. All non local enrolements will
be reviewed early in Term 4 by our Non Local Placement
Panel. Positions for non local enrolements are very limited as
our school continues to grow in number.
We have a very busy couple of weeks ahead as we wrap up
Term 3. Scope IT will continue and our students in Stage 2 & 3
will participate in a gymnastics program. Our canteen
refurbishment will commence on Monday 24/9/18 and we will
finally be able to fly the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander flags as early as this coming Monday! I must thank MP
Sharron Claydon for supplying our school with the three new
flags for our three new flagpoles. Term 3 will end in the most
spectacular way – a day time disco and Pizza lunch, hosted
by our wonderful P&C. I hope we fit in some teaching and
learning time over the next 2 weeks!

Science this term, class 3/4G have been exploring our
‘Material World’. We have considered materials in our lives
and their unique properties.
We hope you enjoy the read!
Glass is made by mixing sand and other minerals and melting
them in a very hot furnace. Properties of glass is that it is
strong and rigid. It can shatter if hit in any one spot. Glass is
transparent and water proof. Glass can be made into different
shapes and can be recycled. Abby Phillips
Clay is a natural substance found in most kinds of soil. It is made up of tiny bits of minerals held together by water. Clay has
many uses. People use clay to make bricks, tiles and pottery. To make pottery, artists mould wet clay into almost any shape and
bake it in hot ovens called kilns. Yuvin and Dominic
Steel is one of the most lasting materials that is used to build tall skyscrapers and wide bridges. Steel is a very strong material
that stays in place. Engineers test steel to check its tensile strength before using it in building. Steel is resistant to heat and cool
weather. It is joined by welding at hot temperatures. Joshua and Brendan.
Wool is the fibre shorn from sheep and other animals including cashmere and mohair from goats. Wool is warm, natural and
renewable. It can be stretched, it is fire resistant and it can absorb water and sound. Wool feels strong against your skin, though
it can also feel itchy and coarse. Chloe Tracy
Microscopic images are amazing to look at!
Timber is wood that is cut from trees. Timber is a natural product and a renewable resource. It is strong, flexible and long
lasting. Timber can be recycled, and it is biodegradable. Timber is used to build wooden houses and furniture. Aprileigh, Chloe
Smith and Jackson.
Nylon. A parachute is a large piece of fabric that slows a falling person or object When the parachute opens, air is caught
beneath the fabric causing the parachute to slow down, so it is ready to land safely. Parachutes are made of light, strong fabric
called nylon. Nylon is light weight and durable. It can be crumpled when packed and it is air resistant. Mia and Hrishi
Plastics are man-made materials that can be shaped into many different forms. Plastic can be either hard or soft and can be in
any colour. Plastics can be transparent or opaque. The properties of plastic depend on the structure of its atoms (called
polymers). The chemicals in plastics comes from petroleum. Petroleum is oil or natural gas taken from beneath the earth’s
surface. Grace and Ryder

Rubber is a stretchy, bouncy material. Rubber comes naturally from a rubber tree and can also be made from
chemicals. Rubber is elastic and can spring up and down. A car tyre is very strong and can last a life time. It can be
stretched or pounded, but it will return immediately to its original shape. Sasha and Lillian
Diamonds are the hardest natural material in the world. It is also one of the most valuable natural materials.
Diamonds are crystals. They are made of chemicals called carbon. To make a diamond into a jewel. It must be cut
and polished. Properties of diamonds are that they are shiny and hard. They are translucent. Amazingly, heat and
electricity can travel through them too. Isabel and Sofia
Titanium is a strong and lightweight silver-grey metallic element. The properties of titanium are its high strength and
toughness. Titanium has low density, this means that it doesn’t take up much space. It does not easily corrode (break
up) and is not affected by heat. Expensive bike frames and Mr Griffin’s rod in his leg are made from titanium! Justyn
and Zakk
Fibre Glass. Modern surfboards are made from foam, covered with layers of fibre glass cloth and plaster called
epoxy resin. The fibres are very flexible when wet. Properties of fibre glass is that it is strong, hardwearing, water
proof and sleek like glass. Lindsay and Jayden
Leather is a strong material made from the skin of animals. Most leather comes from cattle hides. Skins of deer,
goats, pigs and sheep are widely used. Fancy leathers are made from crocodile, shark and snake hides. Leather is
strong and it lasts a long time. It can be made as soft as cloth or it can be stiff. Tate and Daniel
Silk is a strong light kind of fibre that is used to make cloth. It is made from cacoons of caterpillars called silk worms.
Silk is the strongest natural fibre and it is also elastic. If it is stretched it returns to its original shape. Silk was once
used to make parachutes, bicycle tyres and bulletproof vests. Charlotte and Laura

Book Parade and Treasure Hunt
‘Find Your Treasure’ was the theme for this years book week and staff and students certainly did find treasure with 95%
participation, a crew of pirates had their maps out looking for treasure and superheroes were defending it! There were herds of
animals, fairies, princesses and treasured characters from Dr Seuss, Harry Potter stories, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Rainbow Fish,
Shrek and Captain Underpants and more. We were joined by the preschool students and it was fabulous to see many parents,
guardians, grandparents and extended family who came to watch and cheer on their own ‘treasure’. The music for the
parade followed the theme and inspired impromptu dancing from students and staff. Every child who participated had a raffle
ticket in the draw and the six lucky winners chose a book to take home as their prize.
After the parade the treasure hunt was a huge hit with students very excited to collect their three codes to unlock the treasure
box and claim their class prize. Each of the nine places on the map had an associated activity: at the canteen, decorated
with the pirate theme, students looked through recipe books to find suggestions for the menu, outside the Kindergarten rooms
the students played memory using cards made from shortlisted books, there was a guessing competition of how many books
were available for students to read with a clue via a QR code (answer: 8749), a match the book to the staff member game, a
coded puzzle, a basketball shooting game, unjumble the letters to form the word READ and an activity adding dewey
numbers. The prizes in the treasure box were a book (of course) and something for the class to keep or eat that complemented
the book. Some classes will treasure their soft toy or bubble mix and others will treasure their time making paper aeroplanes or a
sweet burst of sugar.
The day was a team effort with special thanks to Ms Onions and 5/6S for their help setting up the activities and the canteen
staff and parents for getting involved and into the spirit of the day.
There is more treasure In books than all the loot on Treasure Island!
Happy reading!

Newcastle Light Rail
On Tuesday this week, students had the opportunity to listen to a
presentation from Transport for NSW that taught them about the
Newcastle Light Rail and how to be safe when using it. Some students
even got the opportunity to “drive” the light rail!

let us know their thoughts on healthy snack and lunch ideas that they think
could be sold in the canteen. Parents/carers, teachers and staff members,
please feel free to add in your ideas too.
The only thing we do ask, is that it is HEALTHY! It needs to meet the
requirements of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy - you can find
out more details by clicking here.
We’ve had some great ideas already this week, and we’re looking
forward to many more finding their way into our suggestion box!

apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Work should be
completed by the end of the first week of Term 4. All things going well, the
canteen will be back in operation from Monday, 22nd October.
We are very much looking forward to an amazing new canteen with up-to-date facilities and equipment. Thank you to
our wonderful school for helping get this sorted!
