She regularly participates in Plein Air Invitationals across the country, and this year will be painting in the Telluride Colorado, Kern County and Laguna Plein Air Invitationals. Rita has been featured in Plein Air Magazine and Southwest Art Magazines where she was named an “Artist to Watch”, and her “HeARTfelt Hands 2017 Studio Sale” made the local Coast News! Rita began her formal training at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She continued her education with classes at the Watts Atelier in Encinitas and through experience with and influence of other prominent figurative and landscape painters. Rita has since developed a style of her own and enjoys painting "en plein air" and in her Carlsbad studio daily. Rita's background in architectural rendering stems from her earlier career in restaurant and hotel design. A few words from COAL President, Charles Dozer . . .

The Annual COAL Open Juried Show is running now. We are very pleased with all those who

entered the show. Those of you who submitted your artwork are special to us and we want to

especially thank our judges, Linda Doll and John Cosby for their work on our behalf. Congratulations

to our juried-in art and artists, the ribbon winners, and Best-of-Show, watermedia artist, John

Robinson, for his piece, “Road Show.”

. . . and a few more words from COAL Gallery Director, Judy Richardson

Labor Day, September 3rd, is a big holiday tourist weekend. COAL will stay open that day. We are offering a FREE ENTRY up to 60” diagonal measurement if you will volunteer to fill the 2-5 PM time slot. You can bring a few of your pieces to display at the desk and out in front. You may pick up your parking pass early to save you a trip to the parking lot.

It is almost time to nominate the 2019 Board members. Some of our board members are ready for a change and want to serve in a different position and some are retiring. We need some new blood and new ideas. Serving on one of the committees is a terrific way to get to know other artists and develop artsy friends. I have truly enjoyed the camaraderie of working with every one of you. Give me a call and I’ll fill you in on the details. I’m happy to help you find just the right fit for you. Attention Sculptors: potential buyers want to know the material of your sculpture such as marble, granite, clay, alabaster, maple, oak, etc. They suggested you add the material in bracket after the title. “Mother & Baby Penguin (granite).” The title can be 25-30 spaces depending on letter size. Remember, as a league of artists we are committed to serving our fellow members as well as our community. If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to contact me.

Welcome aboard to all of the new members. Judy Richardson, [email protected] 760-433-2258

I do hope all readers of COAL’s “Brushmark,” know that we are very aware that artists have many choices of where to display their art. We believe the COAL Gallery provides a great choice and would like to be your first choice. We continue to have extended hours to 8:00PM on the Fourth Thursday of August and September with live-drawing models. On September 27th we are a location for the downtown Carlsbad “Art Hop”(5-8:30PM), which is a fun event and well attended. We always want to maintain high standards of art in the primarily North County art community, so, please enjoy the Gallery, submit your work, and participate in what we call the “COAL Experience.” Your comments to me are welcomed. Best to all, Chuck Dozer, (760) 753-4784, [email protected]

Marie Huggin, September’s Featured Artist

Marie has been a studio watercolorist for over twenty years. Her paintings have been juried into numerous regional and international shows.

She especially enjoys the various techniques of alla prima painting. As Marie notes, “The effects of outdoor light reveal themselves on a subject and offer unique opportunities to use color and value that are not always afforded in the studio.”

However, in the last five years or so, oil painting has become one of her keen interests.

Marie is a juried signature member of five regional watercolor societies and COAL’s September Featured Artist .

COAL Artist Website Pages Update Coming . . .

The COAL artist pages have been non-functioning for the past three

or so years because until now, we haven’t had anyone with the know-

how to keep them up. Consequently, your pages became obsolete.

We are very lucky to have COAL member, Stevie Benintende, who has

volunteered to streamline and update them for us. During this process

your pages will go dark so that incorrect information is not on the

website. The revisions may take two to three months as Stevie has a

full-time job. We will keep you posted on their progress. Please join
