September 2017

Summer is winding down and we have SO much to tell you about our 2017-2018 year. First, however, we must comment on how wonderful this year’s show, “Our Lucky Stars”, was! A heartfelt THANK YOU goes to the Show Chair Ellen Bowler, Co-Chair Cindy Greenwood and all the Show Committee members, guild members, family and friends who worked so hard to ensure the Show’s success. A huge amount of planning, talent and energy created a gorgeous display of over 300 quilts and a splendid Show. We’d like to recognize the superb job done by our Show Curators, Claude Danner and Robin Maguire, over the years. They are stepping down, but fear not, Diana Anderson and Alison Carroll are taking over and started learning this key position from Claude and Robin during the show. THANK YOU again to the teams who created this year’s wonderful “Starlight” and “Fabricadabra” Raffle Quilts. Thanks to our members who sold raffle tickets, volunteered at the show, made Boutique items or donated to the raffle basket or the Pieced Treasures raffle. Your efforts and contributions are crucial. Don’t forget that our raffle ticket sales fund Scholarships and Toolships for Cape Cod Technical High School students!

What’s coming up? Programs Chairs Jane Wilson and Lynn Perrault have a great mix of Programs for us. In September, fabric painter Mickey Lawler will speak and offer two workshops (one is already sold out!) In October, Bonnie Dwyer will speak and give two workshops.

An important reminder: our monthly guild meetings will no longer be held at Our Lady of the Cape Church. Instead, our Tuesday evening meetings for September and October will be held at the Brewster Ladies Library on Route 6A in Brewster and our Wednesday morning meetings will take place at the Harwich Community Center on Oak Street in Harwich. Watch your email for further details.

Saturday Quilt-Ins resume on September 9th. They are a great place to sew, learn or just chat with friends. Diane McGuire will also host several Wednesday afternoon Quilt-Ins. Our New Members’ Tea will take place on Saturday, October 7th, following the Quilt-In. We encourage current members to attend and welcome new members. Later in October Diane will lead a special workshop in support of our 2018 Quilt Show Theme, “Seasons of Quilting”. Speaking of next year’s Show, we are delighted to report that Noreen Couture has agreed to be 2018 Show Co-Chair with Cindy Greenwood. Thank you, Noreen! The location for next year’s show is still uncertain. We’ll keep you posted at meetings and by email.

What else is lined up? We are excited about our first ever Seaside Retreat beginning on October 1st. Thank you Rada and Noreen for organizing what should be a great time in a beach-front location. Debbie Zieda has a shop-hop bus trip scheduled for us on November 1st. Our annual Holiday Lunch is planned for December 2nd. Two more of our popular Winter Retreats will take place in early 2018. Our wonderful Block of the Month coordinator, Noreen, will continue to encourage our creativity

Please take advantage of what Bayberry has coming up. Please also consider getting involved in helping Bayberry do all that it does. None of it happens without YOU!

Thank you to all members who supported the show by selling your raffle tickets, volunteering at the show, making something for the Boutique, or becoming a Bayberry sponsor. All those tickets you put in the basket were saved for the big drawing at the end of the show. The lucky winner of this drawing was Alison Carroll, who won a $50.00 gift certificate to Tumbleweed. Congratulations, Alison, and happy sewing!

Bayberry in Action/Quilt-a-thon

This year the Quilt-a-thon run as part of the Bayberry In Action booth during the show asked visitors to stop and make a block for quilts being made for seriously ill children at Boston Floating Hospital for Children. Visitors were invited to choose a block design, choose shapes from precut fabric in primary colors, and sew their block together. Over the three show days, visitors made 30 blocks, which will be made into five child-sized quilts!

In addition, at the May guild meeting we asked members to help by making a block to bring to the show. We received 87 blocks! Many thanks to each of you generous members.

At the September and October Quilt-ins, members are being invited to sew these happy blocks into quilt tops. Please come to help if you can. Susan Griffin’s husband has offered to quilt many of these quilts, but we are looking for other members to take one or two to quilt them. From this superb response we expect to make about 20 quilts! 2018 QUILT SHOW

As we look back on the success of the 2017 Quilt Show, the planning for the 2018 Quilt

Show has begun.

Our title for the 2018 show will be “Seasons of Quilting” and the show colors will

be variations of orange and green. I hope that all of our Bayberry quilters will be able to

find inspiration in the wonderful changing seasons of the Cape. I know that the talented

Elsa Hahn will be working on the challenge quilt guidelines and that many of you have fab-

ric stashed away in our show colors that are just waiting for the right inspiration.

I am very pleased that Noreen Couture will be working as the 2018 co-chair. She will bring

that extra spark, creativity and organization to our show that will inspire us, as we work to

resolve the uncertainties of the possible change in our quilt show location. We must re-

member that the location of the quilt show is only secondary to the beauty of the quilts our

Bayberry members create and display.

We still have a few openings on the 2018 Quilt Show team and we are looking for that Bay-

berry member that wants to contribute to the success of the show. To our new members,

joining the Quilt Show team is a wonderful way to meet the Bayberry members. We need

help with our show book, publicity, decorations and our memorial quilt corner. Please

contact Co-chairs Cindy Greenwood and/or Noreen Couture and join the team!

FALL SHOP HOP!

Our wonderful show is now a happy memory, so it's time to look forward to the fall. Plans have been made for a fun-filled Shop Hop to our neighboring Rhode Island.

Our last stop is up in the air. The one I had hoped to include is closed that week. Will discuss our options at the September meeting.

You can either brown bag it, which I do recommend, or grab a bite to eat Table Bistro in the same area as Knit One. Their website is http://www.tableri.com/. But, this is NOT a fast food restaurant. It is small, so if you opt for a sit down lunch, you may not have time to shop at Knit One, Quilt Too.

The cost for signing up BEFORE OCTOBER 1, 2017 is $45.00 for members, $50.00 for non-members.

After October 1, cost will be $55.00 for members, $60.00 for non-members.

Landscape Fabrics”

Graded School House

This class is an introduction to the use of

non-toxic transparent permanent textile

paints on cotton fabric suitable for quilts. Students

will use watercolor paints to paint landscape

elements and experiment with mixing colors, mani-

pulating fabric, and painting special effects pieces for

blue skies, sunsets, leaves, earth and others. The

designs produced are a combination of planning and

serendipity and give the students a hands-on basis for

future exploration in hand-coloring fabric. Suitable for

Learn to paint water, sky, and sand, then combine

themed Quilts from Antique to Modern”

Stars have always been a popular design motif in quiltmaking. This star-themed program

showcases many different styles of quilts, spanning 185+ years from the 1830’s to today.

Actual quilts from private collections will be shown.

10/25/17 Workshop - “Finishing School” Harwich Community Center

Learn tricks of the trade for a pleasing finished quilt: squaring up, correcting wobbly edges, selecting an ap-

propriate edge treatment, and blocking. This workshop includes demonstrations of techniques for multiple

edge finishes, and bindings.

10/26/17 Workshop - “Instant Improv for Quilters” Graded School House

Learn to make improvisational quilt blocks by combining your own scraps with class sup-

plies. This class works well for those who have always wanted to bring out their inner

abstract artist and who will allow themselves to be open to asymmetrical, abstract, and

generally ‘wonky’ designs.

3/28/18 Wednesday Guild Meeting Harwich, Community Center “Secrets of Professional Quilters ~

Revealed!”

This presentation is packed full of useful information that will teach you to use alternative piecing methods

for making units, as well as tips and hints relating to every aspect of quilting. There are plenty of tips on a

variety of subjects such as general pressing tips, pressing Four Patches and Pinwheels to lay perfectly flat,

and how to correctly sew Connector Corners, accurate 1/4 inch seams, alternate sewing methods for the

Corner Square Triangle units, how to hide flaws and errors, and so much more. Pam will also bring more

than 40 quilts for viewing, all made with the techniques shown in the presentation.

3/28/18 Workshop - “Star String Quilt Workshop” Graded School House

This scrappy quilt features a variety of scrappy Sawtooth Star blocks, each featuring a string paper pieced

center. The fundamentals of paper piecing are covered, as well as choosing just the right fabrics to make so

each student can make their own quilt. OR...you can make the matching pin cushion instead. Star Strings

pattern is required. Pattern price for workshop participants is $5 (regularly $9) and is available the day of

class.

3/29/18 Workshop -“Secrets of a Professional Quilter” Harwich Community Center

This is a hands-on lesson of the techniques covered in the lecture Secrets of Professional Quilters ~ Re-

vealed!. There will be opportunities for students to try many new techniques including the "Make It Larger ~

Trim It Down" technique for Half and Quarter Square Triangles, Flying Geese, and Square in a square units as

well as alternate piecing techniques for the Corner Square Triangle units. Students can practice using tools

and notions to see how they like the different techniques and learn to use a variety of pressing techniques

as well as methods to improve the accuracy of 1/4 inch seams. Students who would like help with general

quilting problems will have an opportunity for one-on-one assistance. The Heartspun Quilts book of Quilting

Hints, Tips, Secrets and How-To's is required for each participant. It also contains the Practice What I Preach

quilt pattern. Book cost for workshop participants only is $12 (regularly $18) and will be available the day of

class. (It is not needed prior to class.)

Quilt Heritage”

elements into your own quilts.

Learn to design and draft templates, cut precisely, and sew inset curves. You will conquer curves using our

original Eclipse design (the pattern will be provided) to make either a wall hanging or a napping quilt. Using

your own fabrics, you can learn about value and create a unique variation of our Eclipse quilt.

4/26/18 Workshop- “Working With Large-Scale Prints” Graded School House

Many quilters love large-scale prints but find it challenging to combine them effectively with other prints.

Students will learn the design concepts behind using large-scale prints and how to show them off to their

best advantage. Students will begin making our Follow the Leader quilt or a project of their choice if they

already have something in mind.

5/22/18 Tuesday Evening Guild Meeting, Brewster Baptist Church “Jane Stickle Revealed”

In the 150th anniversary year of the making of the Jane Stickle quilt, Pam was invited to examine and do fur-

ther research on this iconic Civil War quilt. This lecture reveals the results of her research and sheds light on

the life of this Vermont farm wife who made an incredible quilt.

5/23/18 Wednesday Guild Meeting, Harwich Community Center “A Complete History of Quilting in 60

Minutes or Less!”

Quilting is nearly as old as cloth and this lectures zips through its history, concentrating on examples from the

eighteenth through twentieth centuries and debunking a few popular quilt history myths. New England tex-

tile mill and technology history are also discussed. Attendees are invited to bring one quilt for identification.

Improvisational quilts at times have been showcases for treasured fabrics or ways to use up scraps. In

Make a block for kids fighting cancer

Quilt-in plans: During our September 9th all day, October 7th morning and Wed. Oct. 18th afternoon quilt-ins we will be working to assemble tops for Tufts Floating Hospital for Children. We are still accepting donations of 12 1/2” blocks (finished 12”) in Crayola crayon primary colors, any design, up until the September meeting.

Some of the tops will be quilted by Susan Griffin’s husband but we are looking for more volunteers to quilt tops and finish bindings. We will provide all batting and backing thanks to Quilt Bank. Simple quilting would be fine. The quilts will vary in size as the children are various sizes.

The New Members’ Tea will be held at the Graded Schoolhouse on October 7th at 1 pm after the morning quilt-in. More information will follow.

On October 28th we will have an Autumn Leaves workshop (or any season you like) at the Graded Schoolhouse. This skill-building workshop by Diane McGuire will feature several leaf designs using half square triangles made by one of three methods shown. Included will be patterns for blocks and suggestions on how to turn them into a quilt for the show. Learn easy two sided leaves to applique by machine or by hand and three dimensional leaves and their many uses. More information will follow. We hope this workshop will give you a jump-start on your projects for the quilt show.

Annual Bayberry Holiday Luncheon

Our annual Holiday Luncheon will be held at Alberto’s Ristorante, 360 Main Street, Hyannis on Saturday, December 2nd at noon. There is ample parking in the parking lot behind the restaurant. We will have an enjoyable afternoon filled with great food, favors, friends and fun. You have the option of bringing an unwrapped gift for a child or teenager to be distributed at Christmas time by The Lower Cape Outreach Council. SAVE THE DATE AND MAKE YOUR RESERVATION BY RETURNING THE LUNCHEON COUPON TO KATHY HUTCHESON BEFORE THE NOVEMBER 15TH DEADLINE.
