Suicide prevention and awareness is a national focus and RISD is dedicated to providing valuable information about risk factors, warning signs, and available support resources. Student screenings and suicide awareness trainings will be scheduled starting in September as well as guidance lessons on suicide prevention and awareness at every RISD campus.

Research-based Suicide Prevention and Awareness lessons will be taught by counselors starting in September and throughout the fall semester. These sessions will give valuable information on suicide prevention awareness and warning signs in themselves and others. Check your campus website for information about other campus-based learning opportunities for students in this area.

All campus staff will be offered the opportunity to continue their learning in the area of suicide awareness by attending campus specific professional development. This session will review the facts behind suicide, signs to look for in their students, and appropriate next steps for support.

Halliburton Foundation will be presenting to community stakeholders on the warning signs of suicide on Sept. 17 at Lake Highlands HS and Sept. 26 at Pearce HS.

A Suicide Prevention Sheet will be distributed via Peachjar to all RISD families.

SUICIDE PREVENTION

AND AWARENESS

Suicide awareness is a national focus in September, and RISD is

dedicated to providing valuable information about the risk factors,

warning signs, and available support resources. Student screenings,

suicide awareness trainings and guidance lessons on suicide

prevention and awareness will be held at every RISD campus.

SAFETY AND

SECURITYOur number one priority is the safety of the

students and staff in Richardson ISD. During

August, the Standard Responses Protocol to be

shared and reviewed with all RISD stakeholders.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Relationship care is an essential part of daily life. RISD values

healthy relationships and the positive outcomes healthy relationships

produce for all. January and February will concentrate

on helping students, staff and community

understand the value of healthy

relationships.

CULTURAL

COMPETENCERISD values and appreciates the diversity

of the world around us. Understanding

and respecting people from different

backgrounds, ethnicities and beliefs

is a must for adults and the students

they teach. March will be a month of

activities dedicated to celebrating and

understanding the diversity

that is RISD!

RISD’s theme for the 2018-2019

school year is “Connect, People!”

Connections are essential for any

group to be successful. Look for

various activities district wide and

at campuses that strengthen

connections and review all the

liveWiseliveHealthy monthly

focus areas for the 2018-2019

school year.

MENTAL HEALTH

AWARENESSApproximately one in 11 children experience

some form of depression before the age

of 14. RISD joining the movement to end

the stigma associated with mental health

challenges. Programming for this effort

includes opportunities for parents,

students and staff members to learn more

about mental health and meaningful next

steps to support themselves and the

children they teach.

DRUG AND

VIOLENCE

PREVENTION

EDUCATIONRISD takes drug and violence prevention

and education very seriously. Drug abuse

and the heartbreaking outcomes produced

by violence can change the trajectory of

a young person in the blink of an eye. In

October, drug and violence prevention

programs will include Red Ribbon Week,

educator professional development and

parent sessions on: warning signs of drug

use, dating violence and bullying.

RISD!

2018-2019 es “Connect, People!”

(¡Conéctense, gente!). Crear conexiones

es fundamental para que un grupo

tenga éxito. Esté pendiente de las

diferentes actividades en todo el

distrito y las escuelas para estrechar las

conexiones, y también eche un vistazo

a los temas de enfoque mensual de

liveWiseliveHealthy

para el año

escolar 2018-2019.

Aproximadamente uno de cada 11 niños sufre algún

tipo de depresión antes de cumplir 14 años. RISD
