dear Members,

I am humbled on being given the honour to serve as the President of your club, the Madras Boat Club, which has a proud history of over 150 years. My team and I will strive to build on the excellent work rendered by the past committees; with the mission statement being: Keep the Momentum Going! Our task has been facilitated by the presence of stalwarts from the previous committee; thereby ensuring continuity in implementing ongoing projects and to achieve the long term objectives of the Club.

The keywords for my tenure are Inclusiveness, Collective Planning and Implementation.

Every committee member (yours truly included), will be encouraged to form sub committees or in some cases, to rely on the counsel of advisory panels. Vigorous and proactive involvement of the sub committees will most certainly help us to serve the best interests of the club and its members. Please do respond affirmatively if requested to serve on a subcommittee.

Our club is privileged to have one of the best usage of its facilities when compared to most other clubs in the city. This encouraging trait must be treated on par with the ‘brand loyalty’ which many companies strive hard to achieve. To tap the potential of this ‘Brand Loyalty’, my team and I will endeavor to improve and if possible add to facilities and activities of the club such that the members have a memorable experience when they visit MBC. It must be borne in mind that the most prestigious address in our city, derives its name from the Boat Club and therefore it is fitting that MBC should offer the best clubbing experience in Chennai.

Rowing will always be the principal activity of the Madras Boat Club. Young talent is needed to enable the Captain and his council to mould these youngsters into champion oarspersons. Members may please encourage their wards to take up this sport, which builds body, mind, and soul.

The outgoing committee has formulated ambitious plans to take the club to greater glory. I would seek to channel the collective wisdom and expertise of the members and their spouses at what may be termed as an ‘Open House’. An ‘Open House’ is a venue for free exchange of ideas and may help us to arrive at the optimum design, thereby facilitate the speedy and successful implementation of the projects in store. The dates of these meetings will be communicated after due deliberations by the Committee.

The staff, bearers and lascars of the club have always been a source of strength to our institution. My team and I look forward to their active cooperation in furthering the interests of the club, the members and their own welfare.

It is a privilege to be your President. I look forward to your cooperation to ensure that this tenure is one of harmony and success.

K. K. Arun Krishnan

In March this year, I was in Kuala Lumpur for 2 weeks on work. determined to make the most of a work trip, I took an extra

week off and had planned a bunch of things. With my background in ecology, I, of course, had to pay homage to Alfred Russell Wallace by visiting the Sarawak. Wallace, poor chap, is the guy who missed the bus by a whisker when it came to being known as the guy who put together an evolutionary theory

had changed the world. for those who haven’t heard of Wallace, he earned his living by collecting animals, stuffing them and selling them to collectors in England. This was an 18th century craze and he travelled the world collecting animals. Wallace spent some time in Sarawak, which is part of the island of Borneo and the unique species in the area got him thinking and he came up with the theory of evolution. Yes, just like darwin. darwin by then had returned from his

famous Beagle trip and so Wallace had heard of him and wrote to him with his ideas. darwin realizing that Wallace had independently come up with the same ideas as him, hurried to get his Origin of Species published. The rest is history.

Apologies for that digression! Before flying to the wilds of the Sarawak, I, of course, had to endure two weeks of a work-related course. It was quite hectic and we were stuck in the hotel all day

long, emerging like bats at dusk to try and grab a beer and something to eat. This made me all the more determined to pack the weekend with all KL related sightseeing. I must say I did a pretty good job and actually avoided going into a mall except for the last day!

One of the trips I had planned was to Batu Caves, a little outside KL. Having done my research, I knew there were convenient trains and so a bunch of us – mostly Indians and a couple of other folks headed out to Batu. Batu is a corruption of the word pathu or 10 in Tamil. Apparently there are 10 caves and some early Tamil residents built a Murugan temple in the caves. Today, there are several temples including ones to Shiva and Vishnu

and of course the humungous statue of Subramanya.

So off we went to Batu, climbed the steps, took in the view of KL, and even lugged up small pails of sand for the expansion of a temple, thus earning pail-fuls of punyam! The temples themselves were a disappointment for irreligious souls like me. I like visiting temples for the beauty and the architecture. Sadly, Batu was like the ugly plastic version. Nevertheless, the limestone stalagmites were cool, as were the ones that had grown so long they had become a pillar!

On our way down, we noticed a less popular path which we took of course! At the end was a conservation area managed

by a non-profit. We paid up for the tour and got to walk into the caves to check out the fauna of the caves, several of which are endemic to the caves. It was quite fascinating to locate all these really tiny creatures. In fact we realized there were critters only because the guide pointed them out! Once we got deep into the cave, we switched off all the lights and stood around for a while in pitch black. We really couldn’t see a thing. It was complete darkness.

After the tour, the gang was all ready to eat and being north Indian they just had to get their quota of Madrasi food. So we headed to one of the many south Indian eating joints. I decided that dosa and idli in Malaysia was not quite what I wanted to eat. Anyhow as the rest of them tucked into their sambar with gusto I was aimlessly looking around this very Saravana Bhavan (at a smaller scale) type place when I noticed a chair on top of a Godrej cupboard. The chair was identical to the yellow-cushioned, metal frame ones we were sitting on but had been shrink wrapped, like how people get their suitcases shrink-wrapped in the airport.

Wondering why the chair had been banished to that corner, I wandered over to find a neat little typed notice next to it proclaiming, “This is the chair on which SUPERSTAR RAJNI sat when he came for Kabali shooting”.

A week later I was in Singapore visiting friends and hoping to row at least once there. Unfortunately, I twisted my ankle horribly and so had to cancel the rowing and instead spend a day ensconced on the sofa, nursing my ankle. Since I was booked to fly to Sarawak for some trekking (Wallace homage, remember?), I really didn’t need to aggravate the ankle further. So Sunday saw two couch potatoes (my friend with whom I was staying and me) watching Tamil movies. We ended up watching the atrociously bad Singam 3 followed by Kabali. And guess what? The restaurant with its yellow-cushioned chairs did turn up in the movie for a fleeting 5 seconds!

The seventh Tamil Nadu State Masters Swim Meet 2017, which took place on Sunday, September 10, at the SdAT Aquatic Complex, Velachery, was a whirlwind of a day.

Captain Arvind Parthasarathy shuttled about from dawn to dusk with his spreadsheets, making sure every swimmer's name was entered for every event, waiting right to the end to ensure everyone got their certificates. S Murali Krishnan whipped out his sports camera, giving everyone video memories of their memorable performances, even as the women's team scrambled against a ticking clock for a fourth member of the relay team. Amidst all this was the 'Just do or die, just do or die' chants to every MBC swimmer at the start of their event, from a fiercely competitive Narayan. And that was exactly what everymember of the nautical nine in theMBC swim squad did -- they swamtheir hearts out. Prakash gave valuable support for the men's medley relay. Kamini Mathai and Arun Krishnan thrashed the competition claiming their golds with deceptive ease. Lalithalakshmi and Sunita, though new to the 50 metre pool got into the

spirit of racing almost immediately; the finish by Vandana Kataria in the 50 m freestyle relay was spectacular.

The competition this year was intense. Organisers said they received a record number of entries -- more than 400 entries in all -- across all age groups
