PVN FOUNDATION FACTS By the time you read this the Rev. Dr. Blair and Cyndy Monie Chapel is scheduled to be
completed. The dedication service will be on September 18. According to Rev. Brent Ashby the Chapel will have a normal capacity of eighty and can be expanded to seat about a hundred.
This project was funded through Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. The PVN Foundation pledged $500,000 toward the Chapel and sent that amount to the Church in December 2015. Many
PVN residents call this their Church Home. The stained-glass windows made in England in the 1920s will enhance the beauty of the Chapel. They were acquired by Presbyterian Communities
and Services from Waco’s Central Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Blair Monie, who was the senior pastor and head of the staff from 1995 until his
retirement in 2014, has received many honors. Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary named him the Louis H. & Katherine S. Zbinden Distinguished Professor of Pastoral Ministry and
Leadership. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Princeton Theological Seminary.

Spiritual Life Volunteers
2016: The Year of the Volunteer at PVN. We worship in Vesper services facilitated each Sunday
by volunteers in the Joyce Hall Library and in McGowan Auditorium (from which services will soon be moved to the newly built Monie Chapel). Thirteen residents take turns greeting worshipers in
Joyce Hall. Another fifty-four Villagers volunteer in pairs to greet all who currently come to worship in McGowan Auditorium. Rev. Carolyn Mitchell and Rev. Brent
Ashby take tur ns conducting these services with visiting preachers. They are assisted by twenty-five volunteers who read the liturgy and lead congregational singing. Some prepare the
communion bread and cups, and others serve at the table. Capable volunteers adjust the sound system. At dinner, volunteers lead the prayers, asking for God's blessings on us all.
On designated Sundays, the twenty-five Village Singers present an anthem to the congregation, and on special occasions they treat us to a sacred cantata. On patriotic holidays, it
might be a spirited anthem. And then there’s the jolly music at the annual Grey Fox Follies. Volunteering is a way of life in the Village, so join us. We offer opportunities in a variety of
activities. And if your own interests include worship services, see Judy Moreland in the Spiritual Life Office. She’ll match your talent to our ministry to love God and our neighbors.

Tashiana Christie-Rush: Jamaican born, this 9-year PVN veteran
also brings extensive experience at
Fairmont hotels and CC Young. Married, with one child.
Carmen Goode: Dallas native in
charge; she
boasts two lovely
daughters and loves fishing
and cooking.
PVN residents share many experiences. We
dine together, play together, work together,
and inevitably, share grief together. We are
once again approaching the season when we
can show appreciation for all the teammates who make these activities as rewarding as
possible. Many labor in relative obscurity
behind the scenes. But, in this space, we
want to acknowledge the contribution of our
treasured wait staff in the dining room.
Unlike in the typical restaurant, here we develop a personal relationship with many of
our waiters. They are careful observers of
our preferences and often I find my beverage
of choice waiting for me when I sit down to
dine (How do they do that?). They take our special orders and unobtrusively see that our
dishes are removed promptly between
courses. Because we dine in the same place
every day and see the same people, dining
together is one of our primary satisfying social activities. This is made possible by the
carefully selected and well trained group of
dedicated teammates.
Some of the staff comes to us from
online applications, some through referrals,
and some are recommended by friends. Responsibility for hiring and training is
shared primarily by Carmen Goode and
Dane Cummins. Carmen takes great
pride in providing an atmosphere of
congeniality and beauty, right down to the flowers that decorate the tables. (For grand
occasions, she obtains the materials and
creates these special arrangements herself.)
She often asks veterans such as Esther and
Tashiana to serve as mentors. Newcomers soon learn that the bar is set high by their
example.
Soon the familiar red boxes will appear
in various campus locations. They will hold
the residents’ donations to the PVN Employee Appreciation Fund. At Christmas
time those donations are distributed to all
teammates, based on their years of service.
Let's be generous.

CHAUTAUQUA WELCOMES
ELLIOT ENGEL The first fall Chautauqua program will be at 6:30
on Tuesday evening, September 20. Coffee and cookies will be served in the Great Room after the 5:00 PM dinner. Mark your calendar and pick up your tickets soon; a full house is expected.
We especially welcome our many new residents because Dr. Engel is one of our favorite speakers. He is a distinguished lecturer, teacher, writer, and publisher. About two hundred and fifty
times a year he lectures on varied topics throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. He has also written ten books and four plays. His talks are filled with
interesting details and little-known facts that intrigue his audiences. Your Chautauqua Committee has chosen “The History and Mystery of Wine” as the subject for this program. Dr.
Engel will trace the ancient origins of wine and will continue the story through the popularity of wine today. Special attention is given to the competing drinks that almost destroyed wine’s
popularity in the seventeenth century and to the unexpected consequences of the Muslim prohibition of all spirits beginning in A.D.700. The October program will be presented by a
string quartet from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the November program will feature Doug Montgomery, the star attraction at Vanessie’s Piano Bar in Santa Fe. There is not
another retirement community in the Dallas area that has programs like we have at PVN; our thanks go to the Presbyterian Village North Foundation for funding the Chautauqua programs.

PVN’S SHANNON RADFORD, A 2016 EACH MOMENT MATTERS HONOREE
Twenty-four honorees, including PVN Wellness Manager, Shannon Radford, will be presented at the seventh annual Each Moment Matters
Luncheon to be held at the Hilton Anatole on Friday, October 28. Hosted by Presbyterian Communities and Services Foundation (PC&SF), this year’s luncheon will feature Golden Globe
winner, author, and philanthropist, Henry Winkler (“The Fonz”) as guest speaker. Last year’s luncheon raised more than $650,000 for the Faith Presbyterian Hospice
Caring Fund, providing critical financial support to terminally ill hospice patients. Patients received excellent care, participated in music, massage, and pet therapies, and their families received
bereavement services, including children's grief therapy. In addition to raising money for the Caring Fund, the luncheon is also an occasion to
recognize local persons who strive to be agents for change. Honorees were nominated for the following attributes: Devotion to the community displayed through
meaningful and consistent gifts of time and/or significant financial resources.
Faith in serving others with joy, gratitude, respect, kindness, and love.
Courage in empowering, educating, and giving hope to persons of any age.
Personal and professional integrity in maintaining high levels of ethics, reliability,
trust, and decency. Quietly leading and tirelessly working—often
anonymously—in the community. Nominated by PVN Executive Director Ron
Kelly, Shannon Radfor d exemplifies the foregoing attributes in every way. She is savvy about the body and how to stay well (for example, she developed the Wellness University program).
Over the past ten years, Shannon has developed innovative programs and initiatives that have improved the lives of PVN residents. This
year eighty independent-living residents enrolled in the program.
The 2016 Luncheon is expected to attract close to a thousand guests who will enjoy Mr. Winkler’s
humor while helping to support hospice patients in the North Texas area—and honoring wonderful individuals like Shannon.
Sponsorship opportunities and tickets can be
found at eachmomentmatters.org.

Two openings will mark the fall season at PVN: one for the Café and one for the Life Fitness Center. Both will add new dimensions of health, fun, and schedule flexibility for PVN residents and their guests. "The Café will open after we get our certificate of occupancy from the city of Dallas. We are projecting sometime in September," says Dane Cummins, Director of Food Service. He’s very excited to offer full day food service Monday through Saturday, with coffee and muffins available from 6:30 AM till 10:30 PM Outdoor seating on the patio will turn Wednesday outdoor grilling into a festive occasion. The menu will include these Hot Ideas: chicken cordon bleu, Nathan's 1/4 lb. hot dog, the Reuben on marble rye, quiche with soup or salad, smoked salmon kale salad with feta, and French dip au jus. New sandwiches will be grilled tuna melt with Swiss, chicken panini, smoked turkey wrap, and a gluten-free bread option. Other new items include cranberry kale salad, toasted bagel with cream cheese, and combos of a wrap and soup and the 3-salad combo. Added beverages are cappuccino/espresso, Snapple drinks, Dublin drinks, naked juice, and sweet-leaf iced tea. Smoothies in six flavors will also be available. For bill pay, the Café will use the current point system being used in the dining room for residents and guests. They will also take cash. Counter and server staff have familiar faces; current servers Rachel Riser and Gloriann Lozada are going to the Café. "In the Fitness Center all is moving along," according to Shannon Radford, Director of Wellness Programs. There are factors at work besides construction: the licensing of the Spa, the City of Dallas inspection of the pool, and the shipment of strength-building equipment that will arrive after other matters are underway.
READ & TALK BOOK GROUP 2016 -2017
Established more than a decade ago, the Read &
Talk Book Group will resume their meetings in the
library on the third Wednesday of designated
months. Discussion centers on one book that a
committee has selected earlier. One member of the
group leads the discussion. The meetings do not
feature a review of the book, but rather a general
discussion of how the work strikes the various
readers.
September 21-Notorious RBG: The Life and
Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Cameron and
Shana Knizhnik.
Meetings for the rest of the year will be on
November 16, January 18, March 15, and May 17.
There are no dues. Members of the steering
committee will be glad to answer questions about the
meetings and the reading selections.

to offer fourteen classes a day, four of them being
water c lasses. The pool w ill be open from 5 AM
till 12 AM seven days a week, with supervised
coverage from 7 AM till 5 PM. A "buddy system" is strongly recommended during unsupervised hours.
Everyone who works out will need a release form, as
will guests who use the pool. Look for the September
fitness schedule for the coming month’s additions.

JOYCE HALL NEWS
New resident, Mary Lou Kirby, arrived in time for
lunch on Tuesday, August 9. Born in Columbus, Ohio,
she and her husband, Robert T. Kirby, lived in many
mid-western cities, arriving in Dallas in 2011. Robert currently lives in PVN Health Care. They are blessed
with three children, five grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren. Through the years, Mary Lou enjoyed
golf, sewing, and knitting, but now plays Bingo and
Bridge, and works crossword puzzles. Welcome to
Joyce Hall, Mary Lou. Jeanne Russell proudly shared the news that on
Saturday, August 13, 2016, her forty-four-year-old
niece, Jean Bliel Cook, swam the English Channel from
Dover, England, to just north of Calais, France, a dis-
tance of more than thirty miles. She did it in thirteen hours and three minutes. Superb!

PVN FOUNDATION FACTS continued…
In 2013 a generous gift from Mary and Robert J.
Wright of Dallas established the Blair R. Monie
Distinguished Chair in Homiletics at Austin
Theological Seminary in honor of Dr. Monie’s ministry.
Dr. Paul Seelman, Executive Pastor of Preston
Hollow Presbyterian Church, added “Blair and Cyndy
were a beloved team at the church. Blair was our
Senior Pastor in the community for twenty years,
sharing the love of Christ during our best days and our most challenging days. Cyndy was a constant in our
lives as well, always present with encouragement and
her infectious smile.”
