First and foremost, a huge Thank you to all of the Monroe

County voters who supported the senior millage renewal and

supplemental. It is heartwarming to see our community

stand up in support of older adults. And, we couldn’t have

done it without all of your help. Thank you. Please know

that this additional money is very much needed and will help

to ensure that we continue to provide services and supports

for our fellow citizens.

Secondly, my condolences to the families of the Honorable

Paul Braunlich and Charlie Slat. Our community lost two

community pillars, and I am grateful to have known both of

them. Judge Paul and Charlie were truly men of integrity,

kindness, and commitment. My sympathy goes out to their

families.

September is National Senior Center Month. As usual, there

are lots of activities and opportunities to be involved. We’re

having a $6 Grilled Chicken fund raiser on the 15th with

music by Dave Rybaczewski. On the 18th, we’ll watch the

home opener of the Detroit Lions, and on the 20th, we’ve

planned a “Track and Field Day.” Plus, a few political

candidates will be here to talk with us about issues.

Cards and other games are always on the schedule, along

with lots of exercise classes — Movin’ and Groovin’, Balance

Matters, Chair Yoga, exercise machines (with assistance on

Tuesdays), Enhanced Fitness, Tai Chi, Line Dancing, and

Tap Dancing. Level 1 Yoga returns at 5:15 on Wednesday

nights. All of these classes are designed to get us up off our

chairs — building strength and flexibility. And, a side benefit

of exercise is improved mental health and moods. Come

give them a try.

Please visit the Center often for breakfast, lunch, a cup of

coffee, or activities. We love to see you. The Center is THE place to be for fun, fellowship and support!

Health Odyssey

On Thursday, September 22, at 12 noon, Jennifer Sell RPh, Manager of the ProMedica Macomb Pharmacy, will be our guest speaker. She will be discussing medication safety and safe

medication disposal, and providing a pharmacy update. In addition, the Substance Abuse Coalition will be holding a “Medication Take Back Event” so you can safely dispose of your medications. A complimentary lunch will be served at 11:30 am for those RSVP. Please call 241-0404 or sign up at the front desk.

Medication Info

Prior to her presentation, Jennifer wanted to share the following information with you….. As a pharmacist, one of the most common questions I am asked is “How long is it safe to keep my medications?” This seems like a simple question that should have a simple answer, but my experience and research has shown that the answer is much more complex.

Drug manufacturers assign expiration dates to the medications they produce based on stability studies they perform and requirements of the Food & Drug Administration. In 1979, a law was created that requires drug manufacturers to guarantee that a pharmaceutical must retain 90% of its original potency at the time of expiration. That being said, the average product life for most pharmaceuticals ranges from 2 to 5 years from its production date.

It is important to note that a medication begins to lose potency from the moment it is manufactured. Medications need to be stored properly to maintain as much potency as possible. They lose potency when they are exposed to light, oxygen, moisture and extreme temperatures. When we think about our daily activities like cooking and showering, the kitchen and bathroom become some of the worst places to store our medications. Ideally, medications should be stored in a cool, dark location that is up and out reach of any children. I also recommend that if you have controlled substances as part of your medication regimen, that you keep those in a lockable container and take inventory of them often.

I am the first to recognize that medications are expensive and that it is tempting to keep them for future use. This can be a dangerous practice for many reasons beyond the potential loss of potency. Certain drugs, like those to treat seizures, are prescribed in very specific doses that require strict monitoring. Other drugs like Epinephrine and Nitroglycerin lose potency very quickly. Both of these drugs are used in emergencies (allergic reactions and chest pain, respectively) and it would create a potentially life-threatening situation if they were not at full potency.

Eye drops are another product that should not be kept after they expire because of the bacterial growth that can occur when any preservative present begins to lose potency. Antibiotics should also not be used after their expiration date. Antibiotics are chosen to treat a specific bacterial infection and a full course of therapy should be consumed. Taking “extra” antibiotics left over from a previous infection can lead to resistance and treatment failure.

Your pharmacist is a great resource to you when considering how long to keep your medications and how to properly dispose of them once they are expired.

Jennifer Sell RPh, Retail Pharmacy Manager

Message from RSVP

Dear Friends,

Don’t let your desire to be independent stop you from learning about help to remain independent.

The Monroe Center is expanding volunteer service to better reach our isolated senior neighbors. With our newly created Sunshine Team we will be on the lookout for seniors who are coping with unmet needs.

Would you, or someone you know, benefit from one of the following?

A friendly visit from a senior, just to get more information.

A “sunshine call” (phone call) from a senior, on a regular basis, for added connection, enjoyment and security.

A senior companion to visit with on a regular basis.

A no-cost consultation with a Senior Resource Advocate for professional guidance and linking to service.

These are just a few of the possibilities. Every day our dedicated volunteers are reaching out to their neighbors. They give a “hand up” where it is needed. They don’t have all the answers. They can’t fix every situation. But many situations can get better when we work, play and learn together. Give us a call at (734) 241-0408 to request service OR to become a member of the Sunshine Team!

Yours in community service,

Joe Grifka Program Director, Monroe County RSVP

can all breathe better!

From the Program Manager . . . Every day on my way to and from work, I drive past a house that has a big pole barn next to it.

A few weeks ago, I noticed a big banner on the front of the pole barn. It was an announcement for a 911 memorial/fund-raiser. Then it hit me…..this year is the 15th anniversary of the 911

terrorist attacks! How is that possible? Where has the time gone?

Just as my grandfather remembered V-E Day, and my mother still remembers the Kennedy assassination, I vividly remember the details

of 911 unfolding in front of my eyes on TV. I can tell you where I was, who I was working with, and scrambling to get the TV set up in the

conference room. It was unbelievable. Images burned in my brain forever. Sometimes those images still pop in my head. Time stood

still as the world observed what had just happened. And here we are; 15 years later…..a memorial/fund-raiser to remember 911. Where did

the time go?

Recently I received information from the Toledo Zoo, reminding me that SENIOR Discovery Days kicked off right after Labor Day. Time

passing…..how can we talking about September and fall already? This year has flown by. On September 13 in the morning, we’ll be

heading to Toledo for Zoo Bingo. I can take 3 – 4 people in my car. Please note if you can drive and take some folks with you, FREE

parking is available. There are more activities scheduled for October. Should be fun for us!

Fund-raisers are a lot like weddings. You plan and plan and put in

so much time to make things perfect. You hope your guests have fun. And in the blink of an eye, the evening is over. That’s how I felt

after the Tom Jones Show on July 22. But what a show! Those who attended had a great time and we’re looking to bring him back by the

end of the year. Stay tuned!

Congratulations to Senior Center members Eugene and Marie Bowman, who won the award for longest married couple at the

Monroe County Fair. They have been married for 75 years! In addition, Mr. Bowman won the award for being the oldest man at the

fair at the age of 96. Time...taking one day at a time. Is that the secret?

And someone has a very special birthday in September! The year Art Love was born, World War I was the “war to end all wars,” Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather was the King of England, we

only had 48 states, and women didn’t have the right to vote! Times have changed.

Art’s family will host a 100th Birthday Party for him on Sunday, September 4 from 1 – 4 pm. It will be held at the Ida Community Room at 3016 Lewis Ave in Ida. All Monroe Center members

are invited to attend. Happy Birthday to you, Art! What’s your secret? “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you

can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back.” Time…….. ~Karen
