Cover Profile
Andrew & Amanda’s 3.5 HP New Way S/Engine
I purchased this engine from Cooltong near Renmark. I do not know anything
about the history of this engine apart from that it was manufactured in Lan-
sing Michigan in 1911.
It is of Hit and Miss design. The 3 ½ hp engines were the most popular New
Way engines produced with over 11000 produced from 1904 to 1918.
When purchased the engine was in a sad state, however it turned over and
had compression. The engine had been in a sandy environment. After cleaning
out the fuel tank, stripping and rebuilding the carby etc it didn’t take much to
get it going. The previous owner obviously hadn’t had any luck getting it going
as the timing was out. New Way engines run in an anti clockwise direction op-
posite to conventional engines, and the timing was set for clockwise rotation.
The engine is still presented in its original condition with some of the original
decals showing through the rust on the fan cowling, and some pin striping on
the flywheels etc.
Owned by Andrew & Amanda Todd.

September 2016 Crank Talk 4
Hello Fellow Members,
Another Month has flown by.
At our October Meeting we will be having a guest speaker talk to us
about load restrictions etc. for towing vehicles, restraining loads cor-
rectly, etc, and other recent road rule changes. This should be an in-
teresting topic and worth listening to. Nick will give his talk before
the Meeting, starting at around 7.30pm.
The Clubroom Wall and Air Conditioning Ducting should be repaired
soon, as quotes are in. This has been a worry point for the Committee
for some time, but looks as though it will not be as bad as first
thought. (The job shouldn’t be too big after all!)
Hope to see you all out enjoying your Vehicles in this nice weather
soon!!
Andrew.

THE PIRIE. Our Cities own Motorcycle
This article was taken from the June Smoke Signal, the magazine from the veteran and
vintage motor cycle club of South Australia VVMCCSA with thanks to the Editor & friend
Brian Forth.
Archibald ‘Archie’ Limb was a master of machinery and it can now be revealed he built
one of the first motor-cycles that was entirely built in Port Pirie in 1903. This was all done
in Limb's business ‘Port Pirie Pioneer Cycle and Motor Cycling Works’ which he purchased
from Mr. T. Row in 1898 in partnership with Arnold Low and is also believed to have
worked with a Mr. Alf Williams later on. Limb wasn’t the only one as at least three brands
were made – the Limb, the Laver and the Growden.
Limb earned a good reputation by reading respective literature of his field to keep his
skills up to date and had the latest machinery available. Within a decade his business sold
and did maintenance work on bicycles such as 'American Path Racers’ which were used
for road and race use. However his desire to enter the motorbike market was strong.
“The PIRIE, built by Arch Limb who ran a cycle building business in partnership with a Mr
Low (at least in the early years) at Port Pirie from about 1903 until 1914. In 1903 he built
a motor bicycle with clip-on Minerva engine, reputed to be the first motorcycle in Port
Pirie.”

And in a funny quirk the business was located next to the local paper, The Recorder. Minerva
engines were Belgium ‘clip on engines’ that helped simplify the transformation from a bicy-
cle to a motorcycle Limb tested his new motorcycle with a trip to Warnertown and back. It
was reported at the time to be a ride covered with more noise than speed. Mr. Limb was
born on June 4, 1862 and according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, at the
age of 29 his life expectancy was 43 but he defied that to pass away at 87.
His expertise wasn't limited to two wheels. On October 15, 1910, Limb delivered an order
for a Swiss ‘Martini Motor Car’ to Dr. Hampden Carr. Martini was a Swiss car-maker that was
famous at the time for cars with engines built in the rear, an uncommon sight at the time. It
was a 16 horsepower vehicle with the chassis built in Switzerland and the body and
mountings were built in Adelaide under Mr. Limb's supervision.
George Growden assembled approximately ten Minerva
engined motorcycles at Port Pirie, S.A., cycle shop in the
years 1904-07. He then moved to Hawker . His interest in
motorcycles started when he bought one of the
first imported by J.N. Taylor in Adelaide; the Growden ma-
chines were assembled using Minerva kit parts

Crystal Brook Show
On the 13th of August we gathered at the clubrooms for our annual pilgrimage to the Crystal Brook
Show ...it was a cool morning but it warmed up as the day progressed. We picked up the flags and left
at 10 am .. my friend Merv Martin drove Henrietta and set the pace, I was the club captain and rode
the bike. We travelled via the Abattoirs Road and met some members at Warnertown. When we ar-
rived at the Brook we regrouped and gave out to the tickets to our members from Warnertown and
those that met us at the Brook.
We parked on the oval in 2 rows and joined our members from Wandearah and Gulnare who were al-
ready parked. It was good to see the Coomblas boys there in Jim’s Holden.
The club also had a display of stationary engines and there were cars from the CABLE club and NARC.
Jeanette Button won 1st Prize with her Tomato Sauce and 3rd with her Worchestershire Sauce and
Crystal Button won second prize with her cake
If I have missed any body please accept my sincere apologies

well but one shudders to
think what may have been. Jenny & John have attended many of our rallies & hope this
incident does not deter them.
Smile with Terry Dunning The woman applying for a job in a lemon orchard seemed to
be far too qualified for the job; given her Arts degree from the Melbourne University and
her jobs as a social worker and school teacher.
The orchard foreman frowned and said, "I have to ask you this: Have you had any actual
experience in picking lemons?"
“Well, as a matter of fact, I have!" she replied. "I've been divorced three times, bought
a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Mitsubishi Pajero, barracked for Essendon, and I voted
for Tony Abbott."*
*She got the job!!!
A man & a woman were having a quiet dinner at a restaurant. They were looking loving
into each others eyes & holding hands. The waitress, taking another order a few paces
away, then notices the woman slowly sliding down her chair & under the table, the man
stared straight ahead. When the woman had slid from sight the waitress thinking this was
a bit risqué & worried it may upset some other diners approached the man & tactfully
said “ Pardon me sir but I think your wife has slipped under the table” The man looked up
at her & said “ NO! SHE DIDN’T; SHE JUST WALKED IN”
