President General’s Greeting

Dear Daughters,

This is a grand time to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution as we celebrate the 125th Anniversary of our founding on October 11, 2015! Can you imagine how impressed our Founders

would be to learn of the amazing accomplishments made by the nearly 1 million women who have joined the DAR? Founder Eugenia Washington said, “We want a Society founded on Service.” And indeed, that is what we have.

During the 124th Continental Congress, we announced that the Guardian Trust Campaign has been established to provide a permanently restricted fund to support the preservation and conservation of our National Headquarters architecture, the fine and decorative arts of the DAR Museum, the physical improvements and restoration of our historic property, and the immediate restoration needs at DAR Constitution Hall. Bill of Rights Did you know?• The Magna Carta

of 1215 was the basic tenet for liberty in England.

• John Locke said in 1690 that a government can only rule by consent of the people.

• A “Bill of Rights” is a list of basic human rights guaranteed by law.

• The United States one was written at the first meeting of Congress in 1789 and ratified in 1791.

• George Mason is credited with being the “Father of the Bill of Rights.”

• Virginia’s Declaration of Rights was used as a basis for the this part of the Constitution.

• The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are called the Bill of Rights.

• James Madison brought 13 amendments to the first Congress to be approved.

• Today there are a total of 27 amendments.• There have been close to 10,000 amendments

proposed.

before it became the law of the land? 9. What is the only day you can see all 5 pages of

the Constitution at one time? 10. What did the Constitution say about slavery?

Did you know the name “Oklahoma” is a Muskogean Indian word? It comes from the Choctaw words oklah homma, which means “red people.” The Choctaw Indians were not the first native people to live in this region, however.

The original inhabitants of the area that is now Oklahoma included:

The Plains Apache tribeThe Arapaho tribeThe Caddo tribeThe Comanche tribeThe Kiowa tribeThe Osage tribeThe Wichita tribe

The Kiowa and Kiowa Apache occupied north central Oklahoma.

Despite great strides made by the international women’s rights movement over many years, women and girls around the world are still married as children or trafficked into forced labor and sex slavery. They are refused access to education and political participation, and some are trapped in conflicts where rape is perpetrated as a weapon of war. Around the world, deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth are needlessly high, and women are prevented from making deeply personal choices in their private lives.

“To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them.” — Theodore Roosevelt

• Unplug devices when they aren’t being used-- that includes the TV, computers and printers.

• Use energy-efficient bulbs and turn lights off every time you leave a room.

• Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.

• Wash your pets outdoors in an area of your lawn that needs water.

Celebrate America!

As we prepare to celebrate our 125th Anniversary, we are aiming high to show the impact our daughters have had across this nation through volunteerism.

So, if you give of your time ... tutoring, mentoring, with a museum, at your church, in the community ... it all counts! As of September 7, our chapter has submitted 444 hours, but we know there are a lot of hours not yet recorded. Please remember to track your volunteer hours and submit them online or send them to Beverly Evans ([email protected]) for her to submit them on your behalf!
