BGE does not ask customers to pay bills using gift cards.

CC ustomers of Baltimore Gas and Electric Company(BGE) are urged to verify the identity of anyone callingregarding their account, especially calls regarding pay-

ment. Customers should also be familiar with BGE’s paymentoptions – the company will never ask customers to pay theirBGE bills using a gift card. There are periodically scams in-volving criminals who masquerade as BGE employees on thephone in order to steal personal financial information. Thistelephone scam is often referred to as the “Green Dot” Visacredit card scam as criminals request the “Green Dot” card inmany instances. In some cases, the scam even incorporates aphone number for customers to call and a fake BGE voicerecording. BGE stresses that legitimate employees will neverask customers to pay their bill by purchasing a cash gift card.

BGE asks customers to take the following steps to protecttheir personal information: If you receive a call claiming that your BGE service will be

terminated unless you make a payment by purchasing a cashgift card, hang up immediately, contact local law enforcementand then report the incident to BGE by calling 800.685.0123. Do NOT provide any personal information to the caller; do

NOT purchase a gift card. If someone states he or she is a BGE employee and asks to

enter your home or business, ask for their employee informa-tion. If you are approached in person, ask to see photo identi-fication, which should display the BGE logo, a name, photograph and identification number. Call BGE at1.800.685.0123 and a representative can verify the employeeand the nature of the visit or phone call. Take note of BGE’s official methods of payment. Customers

can pay their bills by calling the BGE customer contact centerat 800.685.0123, online at bge.com, by mail and at authorizedAmerica’s Cash Express and Global Express locations. Cus-tomers can visit bge.com to learn more about payment op-tions. “There are times when we legitimately call customers, or

when we need to enter homes in response to emergencies, tocheck or install BGE equipment, read meters, or to start orstop service. These calls or visits can always be verified,” saidSteve Woerner, BGE president and chief operating officer. “Ifyou are ever even slightly concerned about contact from BGE,please call us immediately at 800.685.0123. This number canbe found on your bill, or on the BGE website, bge.com. AA few years ago (okay, it was about 20years ago!) I received the best piece ofmanagement advice that I continue to

use today.I was working for a very entrepreneurial busi-

ness owner and I approached him about an idea for a new prod-uct. I pitched my idea and he thought for a few seconds (whichfelt like an eternity) and said to me, “We tried that once before.”And immediately I thought, here it comes…And he added, “But that’s not to say that it couldn’t work this

time.”He wasn’t afraid to take a risk. Not crazy, put all my money on

14 at the roulette table in Vegas type of risk. He encouraged meto take smart, calculated risks. In just a few words, he told methat someone else tried the same idea and put a lot of time, effort and money into it, and it failed. That told me I would needto research what was done previously and make sure I didn’t repeat the same mistakes. The next three words were the most powerful words I ever

heard when he paused and said, “Let’s test it.”It was inspiring, but at the same time, it wasn’t overwhelming

either. Why? Because he was willing to test it! As decision-makers, the willingness to test ideas is the most

powerful thing we can do to grow. As another entrepreneur Iworked for often said, “You’re either growing or you’re dying. There is no in between.”Time and time again I see good ideas get killed because the

business owner wants all the questions answered before alaunch. That’s wrong! The idea is to use the test to find the answers. These are answers to critical questions too such as,“How much would people pay?” “How many could we sell?” “Is it best to sell online or through traditional advertising channels?” The response I often hear from other business owners: “We

need to get the answers to those questions before we do any-thing.” That simple statement is the #1 method for killing ideas. It’s what kills creative ideas from flourishing – ideas that couldhelp you grow! You may argue that they are perfectly legitimatequestions – and I would agree. However, you will never get validanswers to those important questions before you launch. Thoseanswers come later. So instead of trying to get everything precise before you launch, test the unknowns with low-cost,low-risk launches. Before 3M rolled out the 2-in-1 Flag-it Pen, David Windorski

developed a prototype and tested it with 300 university studentsto determine the best design. Movie companies do somethingsimilar. Based on test screenings they will change charactersand even change the endings in some cases. For example, in thefirst Rocky movie Sylvester Stallone’s character won the fight. After the screenings they re-shot the scene to produce the iconic

Healthy Tips of the Month

QQ : I have arthritis andfrequent join pain, so I'mnot motivated to exercise.

What advice can you share?

AA : Physical activity actuallycan help relieve arthritispain by improving flexibil-

ity and thus decreasing pain.Joint pain can be relieved beforeexercise by using a heating pad tothe area, taking a non-steroidalanti-inflamatory or eating foodssuch as pineapple or turmeric,

they are natural anti-inflammatories. Walking is one of the bestexercise and it is easy on the joints. However, to be classified asexercise effort must be made to increase the heart rate, so a paceof 3-4 miles per hour is ideal. Begin with 30 minutes a few timesduring the week and gradually increase time or frequency. Yoga isalso very gentle on the joints and it is a great workout to buildstrength, improve balance, promote flexibility and relaxation.

QQ : I have bad knees. What are some knee-friendy exercises, and which should I avoid?

AA : Don't let bad knees slow you down. You can still be activewithout aggravating the condition or worsening a recent injury. Try low impact activities, such as swimming, rowing,

and cycling. If in the gym use Arc trainers or stationary bikes.Walking on the treadmill is also safe and easy on the knees be-cause the surface has consistent shock absorption. You wouldwant to avoid high impact such as jumping, running, HIIT, orheavy lifting on the lower body. Once the muscles around theknees become stronger, then high impact activities can be addedback into the fitness routine.

EXERCISE AND PAIN Q&A

Matthew DuniganEdward Jones Financial AdvisorContributing View Columnist

MM any people look for the “secrets” toinvestment success. Is it timing themarket just right? Is it finding those

hot stocks or getting in on the “ground floor” ofthe next big thing? Actually, these types of

moves have little relevance to the vast majority of investors —even the most successful ones. So let’s take a look at some stepsyou can take that can be effective in helping you work towardyour financial goals.• It’s time in the market…not market timing. Some investors

think they can succeed at “market timing” — buying when theprice is low and selling when the price is high. And this would in-deed be a good strategy if they could predict highs and lows. Noone can accurately forecast these peaks and valleys, though. So,instead of ducking in and out of the market in a vain attempt tocatch the highs and lows, simply stay invested. The more timeyou spend in the market, the lesser the impact you’re likely tofeel from short-term price swings. And if you’re always invested, you’ll always be in a position to benefit from the next marketrally. • It’s “buy and hold” — not “buy and sell.” Even if you aren’t

trying to time the market, you may be tempted to buy and sellfrequently as you look for new and better opportunities. Yet, thisconstant buying and selling can be costly. Frequent trading, withall the additions and subtractions from your portfolio, can makeit hard for you to follow a consistent, unified investment strategy. You’re better off purchasing quality investments and holdingthem for the long term, until either your needs change or the in-vestments themselves no longer possess the same attributes theydid when you purchased them. • It’s building a strong foundation — not getting in on the

“ground floor.”Many people regret not being one of the initialinvestors of a company that has done spectacularly well. Butmost new companies don’t achieve anywhere near that level ofsuccess. So, instead of looking for the next big thing on the“ground floor,” try to build a strong “foundation” consisting of amix of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance, goalsand time horizon. This type of investing may not sound glam-orous, but a strong foundation is better equipped than a possiblyshaky ground floor to withstand the shifting winds of marketforces. • It’s cool-headed thinking – not chasing “hot stocks”— If you

browse the internet or watch one of the investment shows oncable television, you are bound to read or hear about “hot”stocks. But by the time the news reaches you, these stocks mayalready be cooling off. Even more importantly, they might not beright for your needs in the first place. Instead of chasing after hotstocks, which, by their nature, carry a strong emotional compo-nent (namely, the desire for quick, big gains), try to coolly anddispassionately analyze your situation to determine which in-vestments are really most appropriate for your goals. There really aren’t any shortcuts to reaching your desired fi-

nancial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, youcan work toward getting there
