Welcome to September’s About Thetford
As I write, the Thetford’s Great Festival is well underway
at the end of August and no doubt being enjoyed by
many. Several events are taking place as well at the
beginning of September, so make sure you attend if you
are able to; there’s something for everyone! Thank-you
to Maria Cooke for supplying the front cover photograph
this month - the ‘Udder Art’ competition by local schools,
sponsored by Shadwell has been a great success.
Congratulations to the winners, Raleigh School, who
really moo’ved the judges and won £2,000!
Following on from the Festival, there’s still lots going on
with the Tour of Britain coming through the town on the
12th with a whole number of activities detailed on page
5. The Barnham Fete follows the next day, details on
page 6. Towards the end of the month there is also the
Model Railway Society exhibition on Saturday 26th plus
an opportunity for reflection with the 75th Anniversary
Battle of Britain ‘Wings’ Band concert in the evening.
Plus, there’s two new features this month; a recruitment
advice page produced by ‘Recruitment Zoo’ (page 7)
and a top tips for starting a business compiled by local
entrepeneur Ryan Windsor (page 17).Best wishes, Terry Jermy (Editor)

TOUR OF BRITAIN COMES TO THETFORD
A range of events and activities are being held across Thetford and Breckland to celebrate the Tour of Britain’s upcoming return to the district.
Activities are being planned in Attleborough, Thetford, Old Buckenham, and East Harling. They will largely coincide with the Tour’s visit to Breckland on September 12 or take place during the two weeks leading up to it. The Tour of Britain cyclists will race into the district at Guist before going through Twyford, Bintree, Foxley, and Bawdeswell on their way to Norwich. They later re-enter Breckland at Besthorpe before riding through Attleborough, Old Buckenham, Quidenham, East Harling,Bridgham, and Brettenham on their way to Thetford, marking the end of the Norfolk leg of the race. The cyclists will continue into Suffolk where the stage will come to a close in Ipswich.
Thetford: September 7th - 12th Keystone Development Trust will be holding free bike health checks in the week leading up to the Breckland leg of the Tour. Between September 7th - 11th (10am-5pm) people will be able to bring their bikes to Green Ventures Bikes - at Unit 4, 39 Brunel Way, where the bicycles will be assessed to see what maintenance may be needed to keep them on the road. If small adjustments need to be made, the team may be able to carry them out there and then. Everyone that brings their bike for a free check will be entered into a prize draw to win cycling goodies.
On September 12th, Keystone Development Trust will also be holding a family day on the green overlooking Nuns’ Bridges. People will be able to enjoy a range of activities, including bike designing, cycling and Tour of Britain themed drawing competitions, and opportunities to find out more about how bicycles can be recycled. Keystone also hopes to arrange bikes at Nun’s Bridges to spell out ‘Thetford’.
Residents will be invited to contribute to a unique mural which will reflect the Tour coming to Thetford. To take part, people will need to submit electronic copiesof photos taken of the Tour and local Tour-related activities. An artist will later paint the 16ft x 8ft muralon mdf, incorporating as many of the images as possible, before it is hung at the Green Ventures Bike unit in the town. To take part, people can email their photos to [email protected]
Also on the green overlooking Nuns’ Bridges on September 12 (10am-3pm) will be a bar and barbeque, hosted by members of the Rotary Club of Thetford with support from Thetford Town Council.
People will be invited to get together to enjoy some food and drink and to watch the cyclists proceed along the route. All profits from the event will go to local Rotary Club sponsored charities. David Vick, from the Rotary Club of Thetford, said: “Our event will give people a chance to enjoy some tasty treats before and after the cyclists whizz by. We’ll also have a marquee to provide shelter from the sun - or rain! – so I hope lots of people will choose to watch the Tour from the excellent vantage point of the green.”

Recruitment advice from the experts...
Welcome to the new page on jobs and recruiting from Recruitment Zoo.
Each month we will offer you tips and advice, giving you the confidence to get out in the big wide world, back to work, or even explore the new horizon you always thought was out of your grasp!
In the market for a new job? By now you have probablyhad advice from all and sundry to ‘pursue your passion’, use something called’ a network’, write a really ‘way out’ CV, even ‘dress for success’ (whatever that is). Admittedly, we all know someone whose ‘interesting’ tips have worked for them, though more often than not these are usually part of a much bigger picture which they haven’t mentioned! So this month we’re starting with 10 simple timeless tips that work. Follow some basic advice and get cracking…
1. Ask for advice! Build relationships with people you’d like to work with (or for). Don’t worry if they haven’t got a job advertised yet, they will soon.2. Don’t always follow your passion: May not be what you want to hear right now but if you study people who end up loving their work, they often developed over years. Open your mind to other ideas.3. Don’t sit around. Get out there NOW on social media, websites, recruitment agencies, even determine a company or two that you’d like to work for, offer them a solution, help them on a volunteer basis if you have to.4. Learn to listen. Make this your No.1 skill in life! Two ears, one mouth in that ratio. Know when to talk, when to stop, and when to ask questions. Practise listening without interrupting.5. Find the decision maker. Whether it is the recruitment consultant that can push your application or the HR head. Find them.
6. Make friends. The admin assistant or reception generally knows the decision maker’s schedule and interests. This can make all the difference.7. Don’t apply for the job immediately. Yep you heard right! Once you have found something, do your research and try and speak to someone there. Get some tips, see if they can help get your application into the right hands.8. Focus on body language. Sounds crazy? Well no, body language is incredibly important. Sit up straight, don’t fiddle with your hands, show confidence and relax! Pay attention to the interviewer’s body language to see if you are on the right track.9. Don’t focus on finding a job you love now. Don’t obsess about this. Focus more on where you will have the greatest opportunity to add value and ask if the company hires internally.10. Become the greatest fan. Once you find a company you’d love to work for, become their biggest fan and be enthusiastic about their job.
Good luck and let us know how you get on!

KING STREET SQUARE CONSULTATIONAs the Public will be aware, Thetford Town Council have experienced constant issues with the water feature installedon King Street as part of the King Street Square redevelopment. Whilst the Town Council were not responsi-ble for delivering this project, it has been required to deal with the subsequent issues following final installation. The latest issue revolves around poor design of the containment system for filtering the water before it enters the pump chamber. As a result, the Town Council has had to switch off the water feature until this is resolved. Following these constant issues, it was decided in a recent meeting of the Amenities Committee to seek public views on the way forward. Therefore members of the public are asked to email: [email protected] with suggestions that are within reason for the use / replacement of the water feature. These could include; use as a planter, seat / bench, repair of current water feature, replacement water feature, etc. Please title the email WATER FEATURE. Please return suggestions by 18th September 2015.
Parent power raises money for new play area
This month we are casting our spotlight on a community group that has set themselves an ambitious target of raising at least £30,000 in order to completelyrevamp their local estate playground. The Redcastle Action Group made the play area their top priority some years ago and you only need to visit to know why. It is in a sorry state of repair, with limited equipment still in place and the site is a health and safety concern.
Ownership of the play area will transfer from Breckland Council, who currently own all play areas in Thetford apart from Castle Park, to Thetford Town Council in the very near future. The Town Council has been keen to work with local parents to improve the play areas and pledged £10,000 for each play area that it deemed most in need of urgent repair. Redcastle, along with the Abbey Estate and the Ladies Estate equipment at Har-riet Martineau Close were chosen. In Redcastle’s case, a handful of residents are working hard to raise extra money. Through Fun Days and other activities the group has made a great start in raising the money it needs. They have raised nearly £3,000 so far and are hoping that the Community Fun Day they have planned for Saturday the 5th September, (11-3pm) as part of the Thetford Festival will help them raise more much needed funds. There is certainly no limit to the activities they will have on offer on the day, including a Rodeo Bull, Bouncy Castle, Animal Encounters, Cake Stalls and much more. Representatives from the group have told the About Thetford how their key motivation is their children and grandchildren - they desperately want a better park for them. The Fun Day is a great opportunity for families to have fun together, which is very much in keeping with the aim of the group to provide a safe play area for local children. What better way to raise some money than to have fun along the way!
It’s not all fun though; countless hours go into organising big events, from booking the activities and stallholders to baking the cakes to sell. The RedcastleAction Group would dearly like more residents to get involved and help them build a better future for children on the estate. If you think you could help you can contact Cathy Morgan on 07551022966.

Floral Displays Brighten Estate
Residents and visitors to the Norwich Road Estate have been greeted by a colourful display of flowers along Admirals Way this summer thanks to the efforts of the Residents Association.
Back in late May, a small band of volunteers set about the annual replanting of the Associations’ four freestanding flower boxes outside the parade of shops as well as three more outside the Admirals School with summer bedding plants. Not content with this, volunteers went on to replant the flower bed created on the corner of Admirals Way and Churchill Road, in similar fashion. Their labours have been well rewardedby the magnificent show of brightly coloured Geraniums, Gazanias and Fuchsias that have graced the roadside these past weeks.
More than 300 bedding plants were used, the plants being supplied by the local A & T Stores which has subsequently been revamped into a smart, modern One Stop Shop. The planting project has been funded by a combination of Association monies and a welcome grant from Breckland Council. “Work on the floral displays is however, ongoing” said Peter Dunnett, Vice Chair of the Residents Association. “The boxes and flower bed all need regular weeding, dead heading and watering and so far these tasks have so fallen on the shoulders of just 2 or 3 volunteers. We really need the help of a few more people, willing to give just a little of their time, if we are to keep the displays tidy and in bloom. Anyone willing to help over the next few weeks can contact me by phone on 762440. I’m usually around most evenings” he added. One person commented that “it was good to see that some people actually cared about the estate they lived on and the environment they lived in, and were willing to try and improve it” - that comment alone, made it all worthwhile said Peter.
The Residents Association also has a new Chairman for 2015/16 in the form of Graham Parker who leads the regular monthly meetings which are open to all estate residents both existing and new. With the exception of August the meetings take place at the Church on the Way on the last Friday evening of each month startingat 8pm. Local Town Councillors as well as a police representative, regularly attend the meetings and residents are given ample opportunity to air their views on any matters on issues affecting the estate. The next meeting will be held on Friday 25th September.

CHARLES BURRELL CENTRE OPEN DAY Sunday 6th September 2015
As part of the Thetford’s Great festival last year, on a sunny September day we opened our doors and invited the community to our very first Open Day. It was a chance to find out about an exciting new project that was beginning to develop in the former high school building. The event provided us with a platform to build a very unique network whilst enabling us to promote the first group of tenants on site.
Exactly one year later, and again as part of the Festival, we would like to invite you all back to see our progress and discover the many activities and services now available at Charles Burrell Centre.
Again Our network has grown to over 40 organisations including a call centre, nursery, dance school, recruitment agency, cheerleaders and much more. We welcome former pupils, teachers and local residents to take a walk around the centre and see how the former classrooms have been transformed into busy and vibrant spaces now used by a wide range of local businesses and community groups.
There will be a chance to meet our tenants and sample the activities they offer such as sports, art, drama, dancing, exercise and children’s activities as well as stalls, games and competitions. West Suffolk College will also be providing information on a huge range of college courses that are now available in Thetford for the very first time. Be sure to bring along friends, families and former classmates and join in what is set to be a very action packed day. The event will also provide people with the opportunity to purchase shares to become a member of CBC Ltd and find out more about volunteering on site. We look forward to seeing you here on Sunday 6th September from 10am – 4pm. You can also keep up to date with the activities on offer by following us on Facebook and Twitter.
Any local organisations wanting to be part of the event or hold a fundraising stall can contact the
organising team in 01842 779867 or email:[email protected]
Model Railway show comes to Thetford
Thetford and District Model Railway Society (TDMRS) are holding their latest Model Railway Show and Open Day on Saturday 26th September 2015. The event is being staged in the Charles Burrell Centre in Staniforth Road Thetford IP24 3LH from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Admission is £4.00 with accompanied children qualifying for free entry.
Among the many attractions will be Model Railway Layouts in “N” to “O” gauges. These include the following layouts; the “George Williamson” MemorialLayout; Wilvey; Loch Dore; Clone Line; Lydgate; Charmouth; Ramsey; Fullers Wharf; Wadham Yard, and Lochty Lane which is the new layout from Ian Futers. We will have Trade support from Great Eastern Models; Bob Pearman Books; Modellers Mate; Railway Roundabout and Barry Saunders.
This Show, unusually, includes our Clubroom being open so we can show the projects we are currentlyworking on and demonstrate “How it’s done”. TDMRS was formed in 1976 and moved into the Charles Burrell Centre in May 2014, being one of the first tenants to occupy a room.
Chairman Ian Dixon told us “since moving back to Thetford we have generated a great deal of interest in our activities. We have already gained some additional members, and we welcome being able to display the best models from this region in our first Show back in Thetford as well as supporting the Centres activities”.

Introducing local entrepreneur Ryan Windsor
Ryan is a local lad making a success of himself in the world of business. The success he has achieved so far means he is keen to share his experience of enterprise and mentor others who are interested in setting up their own businesses.
Having moved to Thetford with his mother and sister when he was eleven, Ryan attended Rosemary MuskerSchool before going on to West Suffolk College. Upon entering the world of work he discovered that he enjoyed finding enterprise opportunities wherever he worked. The buzz from creating a project and a profit while interacting with others has meant Ryan has seen businesses as being all about taking opportunities and making the most of life. Ryan's main business is property and in fact Ryan purchased his first property aged just eighteen. He describes doing something which many people don't decide to do till much later in life as a natural choice. Having seen a property near where he lived for sale he worked out the figures and could see the financial benefits. Now Ryan owns nearly a dozen properties in Thetford, all of which are successfully rented out.
As well as developing a property portfolio, Ryan has worked for a Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship from the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, which he says has been invaluable for the networking opportunities it's provided, and he is currently employed by West Suffolk College as a Business Lecturer and Learning Support DirectedStudies Tutor. He is also a Trustee at Keystone Development Trust, and takes part in international exchanges organised by the British Council. Having had such a broad range of experiences Ryan would love to be able to help others, especially young people, to follow their passion and have the confidence to set up their own business.
Ryan's Top Tips for starting a business:1. Have clarity about the idea you want to develop and turn into a business. If it's not clear to you it won't be to others who you might need to invest or buy your product/service.2. Make sure there's a demand for your product or service, as evidenced by a researched business model.3. Even if working for yourself is the right choice for you it is not an easy option. It often means working more not less. Be prepared for a lot of hard graft.
4. Make sure it is profitable. Spend your money wisely, only spend money on essentials – things that earn you or enable you to earn money.5. If you have a team in place – and you most likely will - make sure they share the business vision and values.6. Don't stay behind your computer, get out there! Meet your clients, if something needs doing take responsibility for getting it done, see how well your product or service is working.7. Use your head and your gut to guide you - the explicit and tacit knowledge and insight from experience that you have - but not your heart.

The August meeting of the Thetford Society welcomed local bee-keeper Kate Coghlan who described how her interest in the world of bees had been fostered at an early age. Since those days, she has expanded her knowledge and expertise but admitted that there was always more to discover about the habits and behaviour of the fascinating insect. The next meeting is the AGM and nominations are sought for committee members. Reports from office holders will be followed by wine and cheese. Thetford Lionesses take pride in supporting ‘Clowns
in the Sky’
For any parent the pain of watching their child battle illness is heart breaking and the feeling of uselessness immeasurable. This happened to Lynn Weston and Richard Chambers whose daughter, Jennifer, died on 21st April 2004 following a nine month battle against a brain tumour. Throughout her battle Jennifer always found a sense of fun and it was this that inspired her parents to set up the charity ‘Clowns in the Sky’. Registered Charity No: 1105195
‘Clowns in the Sky’ aims to bring a smile to the face of any child who is suffering this awful condition. The charity sponsors monthly visits by entertainers to children’s oncology wards, provides financial support to families supporting children through their treatment plan and giving an annual donation to Brain Tumour Research.
In addition, the charity has embarked on a five year project aiming to provide a mobile and sensory trolley to as many children’s oncology units as possible. The trolley is designed to offer stimulating and fun activitiesat times, especially evenings and weekends when the playroom crafts are not available. After watching an edition of the TV programme where the charity was first highlighted, making further enquiries and contacting Development Officer Donna, members of the Thetford
(Breckland) Lioness Club were inspired to support ‘Clowns in the Sky’ and challenged themselves to raise sufficient money to provide a trolley for a local hospital with an oncology unit. Following a year of fund-raising including a fashion show, ladies quiz nights, bric-a-brac stalls, members knitting and selling hundreds of Christmas and Easter Novelties plus a donation of £50 from our local Trefoil Guild organisation they surpassed their target. Members were thrilled to be informed that we would be providing the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital children’s oncology unit with their first trolley.
On Wednesday 29th July four Lionesses met with Donna Bryne and presented the trolley to the staff on the Jenny Lind Unit. Everyone was delighted with the vast array of activities the trolley provides which will help support these special children through their personal battles. The Lionesses have pledged to continue their support through raising the awareness of this charity, replenishing the content of the trolley and promoting Jennifer’s sense of fun. The staff and the Lionesses were delighted with the trolley and its contents and hope it will bring a little sunshine into the lives of the children who are ill.

JAIL AND BAIL
The Jack Pilling Art Gallery has organised a Jail & Bail to take place on Wednesday 2nd September.
Six prominent members of our community will be arrested outside King's House at 11.00am for variouscrimes and marched down King Street by two uniformed police officers. Those taking part will be Councillor Mike Brindle, Councillor Mark Robinson, Councillor Stuart Wright, Mick Whitman, Wendy Raphael and Dolly Hagarty. Charge sheet reader Margaret Rutter will be starting off the proceedings. All participants will be in fancy dress and their crimes will be connected to their fancy dress which could be rather amusing and hilarious. They will then be taken to the Guildhall, Small Court which will serve as a "Jail". They will be incarcerated until they can raise as much Bail money as possible. There will be a buffet laid on for the prisoners so that they will not starve or die of thirst whilst being held in custody. All the proceeds raised from this event will be donated to St. Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St. Edmunds who achieve such marvellous results in caring for the terminally ill.
Pam Goveia (Administrator)
The time has come to prepare for Winter and so the AGM for The Jack Pilling Art Gallery is due. We are all ready for our second AGM Meeting. Put an end to slow, messy & painful hair removal methods!
September and October are normally good months to start Intense Pulse Light (Ipl )treatments providedyou are not planning a holiday in the sun. It is recommended to limit sun exposure and to use a sunscreen (spf 30) before and after treatment. The Ellipse treatment uses short, safe bursts of light emitted from a flash lamp to remove unwanted hair from all areas of the body. Special glasses must be worn to protect the eyes from the intensity of the light during treatment. Only dark hairs containing pigment can be treated as they absorb the energy from the light. This means blonde or white hairs can not be treated with Ellipse, therefore we recommend electrolysis as a permanent alternative. Clinical studies have confirmed that at least 3-6 treatments are needed because of the unique growth cycle of hairs. These can be affected by numerous factors such as body site, hair density, thickness, ethnic origin, hormonal status and age. Treatment intervals vary from 4-8 weeks apart. It really is an amazing treatment, helping prevent the problem of ingrown hairs and another advantage -the hairs need to be short for the treatment. A full consultation and patch test must be completed before any treatment.

Beauty Geek Columnby Caroline King
Welcome to this month’s hair and beauty feature.
Our topic this month is hair and “split ends”. There are numerous reasons for these to occur, I am sure you all can relate to at least one of them? I know I certainly can. What is a split end? A split end is when the end of your hair becomes split and dry due to lots of different reasons. Why does it happen? Hair appliances such as hair dryers, straighteners, and tongs work by heating up the hair to achieve the effect desired. They also end up sucking the natural moistureout of hair follicles, leaving your locks dry and brittle. This can then cause split ends. How to avoid this? Simple answer would be to say don’t use the appliances. But we all know that’s not practical. Remember to use a heat treatment spray, oil or lotion prior to using the appliance to protect your hair against heat damage. Using chemicals such as hair dyes can also dry out the hair in a similar way and thereforecause split ends. Ensure you use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner for your hair type and once a week put a deep conditioning treatment on to help to really moisturise. If you have coloured treated hair ensure you use a coloured treated shampoo and conditioner as these will have special ingredients to help lock in the colour for longer results. Brushing and combing: be gentle when you are doing this and brushfrom mid-lengths to ends to help to avoid pulling and tugging on the hair and therefore leading to split ends. The final point to make is that if you have split ends, the easiest and only way to get rid of them is to go to your hairdresser and have regular trims to keep your hair in tip top condition.

September is the turning point of the gardening year with many crops being harvested and stored and preparations being made for the year to come. There is a last flurry of bright colour from chrysanthemums and autumn foliage. We are fortunate to have so many trees along our rivers and a walk there can be a real delight at any time of year.
With regard to harvesting, both onions and potatoes must be allowed to dry off before they are stored. The old practice of hanging strings of onions was good sense to ensure they were fully dry in storage but if you use a net bag do allow time for the roots to wither completely in a dry place before bagging up. Potato tubers need to be exposed to the air for some hours to help the skins harden. Then the sound potatoes need to be stored in the dark in paper or hessian sacks or similar – definitely no plastic!
Bunches of wallflower plants should now be on sale to plant out in the garden for the spring. On a grander scale, this is a good time to plant trees so that they get their roots established in the damp of autumn and and make a good start in the spring. Indoors, if you want to give hyacinths in bowls for Christmas, this is the time to get the specially prepared bulbs started.
The allotments, as usual, have been full of a weed I know as Fat Hen (but also called White Goosefoot or Common Pigweed). This shoots up in late summer and used to be fed to poultry (and presumably pigs) in times
Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements30
when nothing was wasted. It is the humble cousin of Good-King-Henry which you can grow for use as a saladand spinach-type vegetable. The seed from Fat Hen was part of the ritualistic last meal of Tollmund Man before his sacrifice in Denmark in about 100 BC. That certainly doesn’t add to its appeal and I shall continue to throw it on the compost heap!
Our annual show is part of the Thetford Festival again this year and will be in Kings Gardens alongside the Scarecrow Festival on the 5th September. This means it will be easy to come to see our champion fruit and vegetables, flowers and cookery. If you are entering any items you need to bring them in between 8 and 10; this is earlier than stated in the handbook so that judging can be brought forward and then viewing can start at about midday. You don’t have to be a memberof the club to exhibit; the schedule can be seen at Leaping Hare.
The club AGM will be held on Thursday 24th Septemberin the URC on Earl Street. The business part of the evening (usually quite brief) will start at 6.30 and then we plan to share a Harvest Supper. This should be an enjoyable social evening so do come along.

BRECKLAND CATS PROTECTION
Jackie the lady who usually writes these articles is still unwell, so the following has been written by Rita, our lady who specialises in hand rearing kittens:
“Mylo Montgomery Holmes was born on 21st April 2012 in a greenhouse in someone’s garden in Mildenhall. Sadly for him, his mum disappeared about 24 hours after his birth and he was about 2 days old when he was brought to me along with his 5 litter mates, to be hand reared. They were all very cold, dehydrated and hungry. Despite my best efforts of round the clock feeding every 2 hours, 3 of Mylo’s litter mates died within the first few days. The vet felt they would probably all die, but much to our amazement, Mylo and 2 of his litter mates survived. His two litter mates were homed together and on 28th June 2012 Mylo went to live with a lady called Kim. She adores him and I am sure the feeling is mutual, every Christmas Kim sends a card that says “Mylo is still the best cat in the world, I cherish him with all my heart and thank you for trusting me to be his owner”. Mylo grew into the most beautiful cat and, because he was hand reared he is very affectionateand loving. He was neutered at 6 months and his vaccinations are kept up and he is insured.
On 23rd May this year while he was outside he was badly bitten, possibly by another cat, on the underside of his tail. Kim immediately took him to the vet where he was put on antibiotics, however he developed an abscess which was slow to heal and had to be lanced by the vet. Still the wound was not healing despite more antibiotics. Then one Sunday morning about 4 weeks later Mylo collapsed and couldn’t use his back legs. He was rushed to the emergency vet who said the prognosis was not good as the infection had spread to his spine. He was referred to the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket for an MRI scan which showed he had pockets of pus pressing on either side of his spinal cord, causing him the lose the use of his back legs and control over his toileting. Surgery was carried out and after the operation Mylo had to spend the next 3 weeks in hospital where he was closely monitored and given drugs to fight the infection and pain killers. Kim visitedhim regularly and was eventually allowed to bring him home where he has to be caged for 2 months. Kim continues with his physiotherapy and has to express his bladder for him. He also has to go back to the Animal Health Trust several times a week where he goes on a treadmill and has hydrotherapy treatment too. Mylo is

Rubbish result will be good news for charities
By helping to reduce litter on the streets, Thetfordresidents and visitors to the town can help raise funds for three local charities.
The 'Bin it for Good' scheme, set to run in Thetford this autumn, encourages people to do the right thing with their litter, and use the bins provided in the town centre rather than dropping it on the ground. The greater the reduction in litter dropped on the ground, the more money the charities will receive. The project is organised by Breckland Council in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and funded by the Wrigley Company. The three local charities, Riversdale Centre, Thetford Food Bank, and Charles Burrell CentreLtd, were selected by the Town Council following a vote amongst Councillors. All stand to benefit from the project, which will launch on 1st September and run for three months.
Each charity will in turn feature on litter bins around Thetford for one month and, at the end of the period, will receive between £100 - £300, with the sum being based on the % reduction in litter on the ground during that time. All charities will receive a minimum £100, regardless of the reduction in litter.
The Riversdale Centre, the first charity to feature on litter bins around Thetford, provides a wide range of support services for people living in Thetford and the surrounding area. Age UK, Voluntary Norfolk and the Wellbeing counselling service have offices at Riversdale and the Youth Offending Team based there provides support for young people, engaging them in positive and constructive activities to help them turn their lives around. A mental health support group, legal advice and rape counselling are available at Riversdale, and there are classes for older residents who need help in getting to grips with computers. Businesses in the area are being asked to show their support and promote the initiative by displaying a ‘Bin it for Good’ poster.
To find out more about the project, or if you own a business and would like to display a poster, call Breckland Council Environmental Services Officer Steve Hitchman on 01362 656379.

Some heroes often go unnoticed and that is exactly why the About Thetford is helping to say thank you to those who often work tirelessly for our community without thought of praise or recognition. September’s hero is just that sort of person: Stuart Wilson.
Stuart has rightfully been nominated to the magazine as a community hero - twice! for the efforts he makes to preserve the heritage of Thetford. This is no easy task when it often appears that the distinctive features of our town are being eroded by bureaucracy, and efficiency in the name of progress. Stuart has devoted much of his time during his tenure as Environmental Officer for the Thetford Society, spending hours at meetings and writing letters to hold those organisations responsible for Thetford’s buildings and heritage accountable. Often there is nothing to be done and some cases will be lost, but Stuart always perseveres - that is the mark of a true hero.
Positive results are to be celebrated and it was fantastic to learn that St Mary the Less Church is to be faithfullyrenovated so the building can have new purpose, something Stuart has been involved in lobbying and negotiating for, for many years. Passionate about looking after what we’ve got Stuart is currently working closely with English Heritage and other agencies to tackle vandalism at Thetford Priory. While many of us are too busy leading our lives to even stop and wonder at the rich treasures that surround us, Stuart is working hard to save them so that futuregenerations will still be able to see history right in front of their eyes, should they open them. Sometimes it is tangible to see what people do, sometimes it is hidden in the files, and Stuart has a lot of files.

Churches Twinning Visit
On Saturday 15th August, Thetford Parish Churches were visited by 13 Swedish visitors from the Parish of Holmsund. Churches in Thetford and Holmsund became twinned earlier this year furthering the links between the Norwich and Lulea Dioceses. The 10 younger members of the Swedish group have been training and working through the last year as youth leaders and the visit was the culmination of that learning programme.
They started the day by joining the children’s holiday club at Grace Church on the Abbey Estate. Here they taught the children actions and words to a Swedish song about little frogs. After helping with the activitiesand a picnic lunch the visitors explored the town including the Fusion Colourfest on Melford Common.
After a short stop off to visit St. Cuthbert’s Church, the visitors joined local church members in a BBQ at Cloverfield Community Church followed by a time of informal worship. Again members of the church were treated to some Swedish songs. This is the second visit from members of the Swedish churches to Thetford and they have all been impressed by the town. It is hoped that exchange visits will continue as well as prayer support between the two parishes.

GOOD SAMARITANS
A grateful Thetford resident is seeking the identity of two good samaritans that recently came to his aid.
Neil Seach (pictured) was enjoying a day out with his wife when the battery on his electric scooter died.
Neil said: “We attended a fun-day in Thetford and was on the way home when I began having problems with my mobility scooter - the battery died as we approached Hurth Way. My wife - Debs, pushed it back to my brothers house with my sister in law looking after her two children and our little girl. I was left to walk as far as I could to get into the estate as my wife went home to get the car to come and pick me up. It was the furthestI have walked in over a year and each step was becoming increasingly painful, sending sharp pains throughout my whole body. I made it a short way into Rosecroft Way before collapsing onto an area of grass. A young couple, in their early 20's I'd guess, came along and stopped to check that I was ok, and upon establishing that I wasn't drunk but in need of my medication that was overdue and that I was waiting for my wife to come and pick me up they waited with me, tried flagging her down when she went past (I was fairly
hidden from the road) and used my phone to call her to get her to me. They then helped me into the car and made sure that I was ok. The world is full of bad news and inhumane acts, today two people helped me more than they will realise. The pain going through my body was excruciating and just talking to the couple who stopped was keeping me conscious and functioning. Whoever you were - thankyou! I totally forgot to take your names and certainly was in no fit state to thank you myself. You could have walked past and done nothing but you didn't you stopped and helped. We should all take a leaf out of their book and not turn the other way but help each other. I am much better now, I've had lots of my pain medication and strong black heavily sugared coffee and am resting at home.so friends and family do not panic.
If this was you, or you know who it was that came to Neil’s aid - please let us know so that Neil can pass on his thanks direct. Contact 07742157967.

75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain
During the summer and autumn of 1940, Britain was an island under siege. The United Kingdom as a whole was on the brink of defeat, and its very survival, with all the implications for the future liberation of Western Europe and final victory by the allies, depended on the most famous air battle in history. It was the first battle ever to have been fought almost exclusively in the air, and the whole world stood on the edge of what WinstonChurchill called “the abyss of a new dark age” with Hitler’s forces poised to cross the English Channel.
Winston Churchill, in one of his many pieces of oratory which inspired the nation during this dark period, statedon the 17th June 1940 '”the news from France is very bad.... we have become the sole champions now in arms to defend the world cause. We shall do our best to be worthy of this honour, we shall defend our island home, and with the British Empire we shall fight on unconquerable until the curse of Hitler is lifted from the brows of mankind.''
And fight on we did, with the Battle of Britain eventually being won not just by 'The Few', those courageous and collective comprising airmen from Britain and several other nations, but also the outstanding contribution of Bomber and Coastal Command, the Fleet Air Arm, the Royal Navy, the Royal Observer Corp, personnel manning the Radar Stations the Code Breakers at Bletchley Park and the heroic civilian population working hard during this extremely difficult and intense period of our history.
To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the Royal Air Forces Association Thetford & District Branch will be holding a Band Concert in the Carnegie Room Thetford on the 26th September. We welcome members of the public to come along and enjoy an evening of entertainment, and also to remember those personnel who risked and gave their lives so courageously for Britain at a time when it looked extremely probable that we were close to being occupied and subjugated by Hitler and Nazi tyranny. We enjoy the freedom we have today because of those gallant military personnel and civilian population who were led by leaders of distinction, foresight courage and strength and who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

In February 2017, the RAF Regiment will celebrate its 75th Anniversary. As a contribution towards these celebrations, the Association of RAF Regiment Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers has undertaken ‘Project 17’.
Project 17 is a fund raising venture with the aim of commissioning a fine art piece in Bronze and Granite, comprising an inverted Rifle and Bayonet, driven into the ground, with a combat helmet mounted on the butt of the weapon. It is an
updated version of the time honoured way in which the unmarked battlefield graves of the fallen were identified. At RAF Honington, there is a wonderful memorial to those RAF Regiment personnel who lost their lives, either on operations
or during peacetime activities. RAF Honington often hosts the families of those who are honoured here, either on the anniversary of their loss or at a particular time of the year. A short distance behind the memorial is the Garden of Reflection. This is a small garden area with benches, where they can sit, pause for thought and reflect. This association hopes to have the
sculpture added to the area of the Garden of Reflection, in January 2017.I do hope you will agree that this is a very worthwhile cause, and will help to bring a great deal of comfort
to the visiting families of those who gave their all, and made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them, we must remember them.
Our fundraising efforts continue, but we do need a little help and we are seeking donations, no matter how small, to help us achieve our aim. Would you help us please?Donations may be made directly to the project account as follows:

Prestigious award for Georgia
Cadet Sergeant Georgia Brinkley of (1109 Thetford) Squadron was awarded a prestigious Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Commanders Commendation for instinctive and exemplary conduct at the scene of an accident in 2015.
Georgia, 17, was passing along Croxton Road in Thetford with her mother who also serves as a Civilian Instructor at 1109 squadron, when she noticed an elderly gentleman struggling after being involved in a road accident. Without hesitation, they pulled over and Georgia used her first aid skills to assess the gentleman’s injuries, resulting in taking him to the local medical centre for further treatment. Georgia was awarded the commendation at the squadron’s recent Families night in July 2015 by Squadron Leader Jason Allan of Norfolk and Suffolk Wing. Sergeant Brinkley said ‘I was so shocked as I really wasn’t expecting it, I am just glad I could put my first aid training into good use.’ Georgia holds the St John Ambulance Youth First Aid Award which she obtained through Air Cadet training, and this event proves that being instinctive and supporting the local community when they are in need can potentially save lives.
Wing Commander David Miller RAF VR(T) said ‘these actions of not passing by but helping someone in the community who was in need were brought to my attention, and it is for that reason I have awarded Cadet Sergeant Georgia Brinkley with my Officer Commanding Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Commendation for exemplaryconduct’. A very proud squadron commander, Flight Lieutenant Samuel Chapman-Allen added ‘The activities and training which the Air Cadet Organisation has to offer are not just exciting ones such as flying and shooting, but also these important life skills which in this case she put into practice’.

Hello, I am a local boy and just retired. I am usingall the skills and experience that I have gained over the last 40 years to start a small building and maintenance firm with my sons. We have an old fashioned approach to customers; courteous, punctual, finish the job, clear quotations, skilled craftsman, tidy site, and a committed attitude to please the customer. There is no need to over charge - you want a good job done for the most reasonable rate - we want to earn money and maintain a good reputation - hopefully that forges a good working relationship between us and the customer.
I am skilled in all areas of building and house maintenance - I have worked on commercial, Ministry of Defence and domestic properties. There is no obligation if you call for a friendly quote. How can I help you ?

The centre also provides an excellent opportunity for organisations to form part of a growing network of local businesses. Over forty organisations are already based at centre and have all seen continuous growth since becoming part of our thriving community hub. Hi, I'm Sarah - the ‘Community Champion’ at Tescos. This is a new role for me and I would like to make myself known within our community. I am looking for projects to work on and I am looking forward to going out in our community working alongside local residents and community groups. Last weekend we had a festival event for 3 days with staff dressing up and a colouring competition for children. We also had a fabulous face painter in (Sam Mckay), Nanny McCupcake, and Monster Munchies servingup delicious hot food. We also had an ice cream van. We were raising money for our twin charities this year which are The British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK - we raised a grand total of £417.97 and to finish the weekend off in true festival style we had a band come in and play for us - Ben Says Alright - and they were amazing! Best wishes, Sarah

HAZARDOUS WASTE AMNESTY
Thetford's residents are being urged to check their cupboards, sheds and garages for toxic household chemicals that they don’t want any more so they can take them to be disposed of safely and securely at a series of household hazardous waste amnesties taking place at seven of Norfolk County Council's recycling centres across the county, including Thetford, during September. Wood preservatives, bug and weed killers, paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products are among the wide range of household chemicals that will be accepted – for free – at the weekend-long events. These are products that are too dangerous to be tipped down drains or sent to landfill without damaging the environment.
The events will be taking place between 9am and 6pm on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2015 Thetford, Telford Way, IP24 1HU (other locations will be open on other days across Norfolk).
Toby Coke, Chairman of Norfolk County Council's Environment Development and Transport committee welcomed the news of the events saying: “We all have to use chemicals for DIY jobs and chores around the house and garden. But getting rid of the leftovers legally and responsibly can be expensive because specialist disposal processes have to be used to make sure they don’t damage the environment”.
Rachel Stewart, Waste Reduction Officer at Norfolk County Council added: "We put these events on as a convenient way for residents to get rid of household chemicals, but most of us can do more to try to reduce the amount we end up with”.
People can find out how to get to their nearest event by calling 0344 800 8020. The County Council recommends that if people are planning to bring hazardous products to an amnesty event they should: Keep all products in their original containers and not mix them together. Keep containers clearly labelled where possible. Make sure that the products are properly sealed to avoid leakage
Notes: The following products will NOT be accepted at the hazardous household waste amnesties: Ammunition, explosives or marine flares, Asbestos, Commercial hazardous waste, Fireworks, Gas canisters (full or part full), Petrol.

Big success for Fuzion 2015
The sun was smiling down on Thetford for the launch of Fuzion Colour Fest on Saturday 15th August in aid of EACH, BigC & Time Norfolk.
Already described as the town’s major event, it evolved from the previous Thetford Zumbathon, Craft and Pamper Event which has been hostedby Juliet Garnham & Louise Dixon and held at the town’s Carnegie Rooms since 2013. The rapid growth of the event naturally led to taking it outside in order to extend it further and the Team got to workattracting sponsors from Chiltern’s, Combat Paintball,Tesco’s Thetford, Zaks American Diner, CastleOsteopaths, Purely Nailz and THIS.
The team of ladies behind the event; Louise Dixon (aka Zumba Lou Lou), Juliet Garnham, Sharon Wing, Amy Messenger, Lynsey Syme and Julie Pickering were overwhelmed by the success of the event which is estimated to have brought over 1,000 people to MelfordCommon. The town was literally buzzing in the excitement and build up to the event. It was a truly exciting event for all the family which was opened by Thundercat’s Cheerleaders and consisted of various sporting demonstrations, a climbing wall, archery, Super heroes, a Frozen experience, inflatables, husky dogs, a petting zoo, dog agility, donkey rides, medieval re-enactment, obstacle courses, competitions galoreand over 40 market, pamper & craft stalls, Tina Matthew’s head shave for Cancer Research and the Little Princess Trust, with the highlight of the day beingan exciting two hour Colour Zumbathon hosted by Zumba Lou Lou and five other local instructors, and ending in a Holi Style Paint fight in which around 300 people took part and saw a rainbow of colours hit the sky above Melford Common.

Great success for second Thetford Loki event
Following the success of their inaugural funstacle “Norse Course” event, August 9th saw local events company LOKI back at Bishops Primary School with their aptly named ‘Wrath Path’.
Over 120 entrants undertook 7.2km of varied terrain, incorporating elements of Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) and trail running. The sun was out in full force to greet over 120 runners, who were treated to an amazing RaveFit warmup by Thetford’s very own Zumba Lou Lou. The starting field was awash with face painted individuals, highlighting the varied mix in abilities, from fun runners to hardcore OCR veterans.
The event kicked off with smoke grenades and water pistol wielding spectators, as entrants worked their way under and over an array of nets, walls and water crawls, only to be met by old classics like the sack race and tyre pulls. New additions to the course included a snakes and ladders blackout tunnel containing ladders and spaghetti, three 10ft pools, spider webs, slacklines and a climbing frame. The LOKI ninjas were again out in full force dishing out burpees and starjumps to anyone touched.
On leaving the field, runners found themselves in the river with ‘Corporal Punishment’, a space Viking cyborg from the future, wearing cyberpunk military attire and wielding a bucket to throw water over the unsuspecting. The route then moved along the river into Thetford Forest, with sandbag carries and tyre flips, followed by a forest maze run. Loki’s signature Lane of Pain was back, with entrants dipping their hands into the fateful LOKI Dips to retrieve a number which would dictate the length of their ‘Crawl of Epicosity’ and the number of reps at the subsequent exercise stations.
On return, the mind games began with “Letter Netter”, a dash back and forth under a scramble net to spell entrants last names using scrabble letters, followed by a 5 piece square puzzle to test tired minds. The final leg featured a 25ft slackline monkey crawl and ended with a slatted wall and final 8m net crawl to the finish where all entrants received a goody bag and a medal.
With 3 upcoming events for 2016 in the pipeline, check out their website for more details.
