Volunteer to be a Youth Health Champion (YHC)

Youth health champions, also known as YHCs, work with young people in their school, academy or community. They provide help and support to their peers to become healthy, active and enjoy a more positive frame of mind by adapting healthier lifestyles. YHCs work closely with the Public Health (PH) team to organise events and activities promoting national health campaigns. Who can be a Youth Health Champion? Anyone between 15 to 24 years of age, can volunteer to become a YHC; you could be in full time education, in a school or academy, have a job or looking for work. You do not need qualifications, just energy, commitment, desire to help and an interest in learning about health. What is involved? You can commit to as much or as little time as you wish. Public Health (PH) will provide all the training, resources, advice and support you may need. The DBS check (Disclosures and Barring Service) previously known as CRB check, may be required. PH team will support you through this process. What will you get out of it? Youth Health Champions gain the accredited award in Understanding Health Improvement level 2 (equivalent to GCSE grade C). If you are interested in developing your knowledge further in health then we can offer brief intervention and training in diet & nutrition, behaviour change, mental health, stop smoking, dangers of smoking shisha, physical activity, signs and symptom of cancer, drugs and alcohol as well as help with your chosen career, pathway or apprenticeship. Study Skills (16-19) Vocational level 1 courses (some are up to level 2). Maths, English and work experience is also part of the programme. Vocational areas include: Step-Up – ideal if unsure what to do Office Skills Health and Social Care Childcare Hairdressing offering at L2 as well Motor Vehicle Construction Catering offering at L2 as well ESOL MENA (Minority Ethnic New Arrivals) programme For Year 11 students who have been unable to secure a place in a mainstream school. The programme provides students with the opportunity to improve both their written and oral English language skills combined with vocational taster activities to improve their interpersonal skills.

My Gen Next is here to help you, the next generation of young people to secure a positive and successful future. 8-10 weeks, 12 hours per week. English and employability lessons with vocational tasters including; · Mechanics · Hairdressing · Catering · Construction IAG and progression support will be available throughout the course. Traineeships (16-24) If you are looking to enhance your skills to get into work, onto an apprenticeship programme or further training our new Traineeship programme will help you on your way. You will enjoy a structured part-time programme with help and support on creating your CV, career choices and job search. You will have the opportunity to improve your English and maths skills and study towards a recognised Level 1 or 2 qualification. You will receive support with your travel costs (16-18 only) and paid work experience with a local employer. ESOL with vocational and employability opportunity and experience
