Major Emphasis

District Charities & Projects

The Major Emphasis of Key Club International is Children: Their Future, Our Focus. It is this emphasis that Key Club International has challenged all Key Clubs to follow through with as well. New York District Key Club has tried its very best to rise to this challenge, as can be seen from the focus of its District Charities and District Projects. Now you, the

individual clubs, must strive to support the cause of children as well!

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center Aids in providing necessary equipment to treat children affected by trauma as well as providing Safe Kids workshops to prevent trauma causing accidents from occurring, and training for proper medical assistance. Total Raised: $150.00

Major Emphasis Programs– UNICEF To help with the fulfillment of the Major Emphasis, Kiwanis has partnered with other organizations and pro-grams to give us four Major Emphasis Programs. These four are UNICEF, Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes , and The Eliminate Project. UNICEF, or the United Nations Children’s Fund, believes in the advancement of humanity by working for the nurturing and caring of children. UNICEF upholds the Convention on the Rights of the Child which states the unalienable rights that should be guaranteed to every child. They work with other organizations to try to clear the path for children to ex-perience the right to: survival, health, an education, a caring family environment, play, their culture, protec-

tion from exploitation and abuse of all kinds, and to have his or her voice heard and opinions taken in-to account.

To help, you can fundraise for UNICEF, help their campaign to vaccinate every child, buy UNICEF cards and gifts, or even just spread awareness and news about the ways UNICEF is changing people’s lives!

You can also help support UNICEF’s initiative to provide every child with clean water by not using your smartphone! Go to www.uniceftapproject.org on your phone, and for every ten minutes you don’t touch your phone, UNICEF’s sponsors will provide clean water to a child for a day!

Governor’s Project

Here are some refreshers and updates about the Eliminate Project: The goal of The Eliminate Project is to raise $110 million The Eliminate Project Committee of New York District Key Club has set a goal of $25,000. Kiwanis is partnered with UNICEF in this endeavor . They will consider their goals having

been met if enough money is pledged to reach the goal of $110 million by ICON 2015. Thus all the money does not necessarily have to be raised by then.

Service Spotlights

“Kones for Kids” Fundraiser By Caitlyn Kirk, G.C. Tech Key Club President

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! G. C. Tech’s Key Club held an ice cream fundraiser at Uncle Louie G’s these past two weeks from September 17th– 26th. All the money raised is being donated to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation! On behalf of my club, I would like to thank anyone who participated! I would also like to thank Uncle Louie G’s for allowing this fundraiser to take place!

Thank you to all Division 6 Key Clubbers who attended the Alzheimer’s Walk and volunteered to help make the event a suc-cess! Below is an article published on the New York District Kiwanis Website!

Youth Groups Aid Alzheimer’s Walk

Kicking off a new school year, the Service Leadership Club of the Long Island South Central Division continued its long-standing tradition of supporting the Alzheimer's Walk at the Old Bethpage Restoration Village. K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Clubs and Aktion Clubs woke up early on the first Saturday of the 2014-15 school year to help set-up and run the annual walk organized by the Alzheimer's Disease Resource Center of Long Island. As they have for the past 10 years, the SLPs members marked the walk course, carried materials to where they were needed, set up and emptied trash containers, assisted at registration tables, worked crowd control and, manned the water stations.

Participating SLPs included the Bowling Green K-Kids, WT Clarke Builders Club, the East Meadow High School Key Club, the Macarthur High School Key Club, the West Hempstead High School Key Club, the Uniondale High School Key Club, the WT Clarke Key Club and the East Meadow Aktion Club. Uniondale Key Club had the greatest number of volunteers with WT Clarke Builders Club a close second.

In addition to providing the bulk of the volunteer work force running the walk, the LISC SLPs also donated over $500 to the cause.

Alzheimer's Disease Resource Center Executive Director Maryann Ragona praised the K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Clubs and Aktion Club for their ef-forts during her opening remarks. "Without the young people of Kiwanis, this walk would simply not be possible.” she told the crowd. “Kiwanis and its K-family has been with us since our first walk in Eisenhower Park. Over a decade later, year after year, these young people are still here doing everything and anything to make this event as success.”

“Despite the difficulties of motivating school-based clubs after only three days of school, I am proud to say Key Club Di-vision 6 along with the Bowling Green K-Kids and WT Clarke Builders Club always find a way to get some members here every year,” commended LISC Service Leadership Chair Lt. Gov.-Designate Rich Santer. "This year, our Key Club Lt. Governor Zainab is away at a District Board meeting. I applaud her for her recruiting effort prior to her departure and thank Division EA Daniel Ruano and Divisional Secretary Allie Michaelis for taking charge in the Lt. Governor’s absence,” he said.

Paperwork Status Update

Election Report Forms– Thank you to all the clubs in the division for submitting their election report forms! Monthly Report Forms– These are to be submitted by the club secretary by the tenth of every month. They indicate the service and number of service hours your club has performed in the past month. An important point to note is that the number of service hours on the MRFs is calculated by multiplying the duration of the service project by the number of people who attended. The MRFs allow me to keep up with the work your club is doing and allow me to know that you are active. They also give the district the opportunity to total the number of service hours performed. If you have not com-pleted MRFs for past months, please make them up! The next form is due October 10th! Fundraising Report Forms– These should be submitted at the conclusion of every fundraiser. These report forms allow the district to know how much money is being raised for what charities so that totals for the District Charities, District Pro-jects, Governor’s Project, and Local Causes can be calculated. These should be submitted with a proof, such as a copy of the check, a letter from the organization indicating how much money was donated, etc.
