Are you ready for FootGolf?FootGolf is the hottest game springing

up at golf courses all across the country.

Eagles Pride is getting in the FootGolf

game by creating 18 soccer-ball-size cup

holes on the green course!

The game is played by kicking a No. 5

size soccer ball from shot to shot. Anyone

who can kick a ball can play — it’s great

fun for Families and friends! Players tee

off from FootGolf tees and play each hole

to a cup, pin and flag just like traditional

golf. You also score par 3s, 4s and 5s like

regular golf (even par for the 18 holes is

72.36 on the front nine and 36 on the

back nine).

FootGolfers play along with other golf-

ers following golf etiquette — waiting for

the group in front to clear before you hit

or kick your next shot. Play time is the

same as regular golf, from two to three

hours for 18 holes. When the FootGolf

holes aren’t in use, they’re covered.

Tee times are the same for FootGolfers

and regular golfers — reserve your spot

through GolfJBLM.com. The cost is $10 for

18 holes; cart fees are the same as regular

golfers.

You’ll need to wear smooth indoor

soccer shoes or tennis shoes instead of

cleated soccer shoes. Also, you’re asked to

stay off the regular putting greens, play-

ing to the side or short of these.

Eagles Pride is a member of the Ameri-

can FootGolf League, Inc. To learn more

about this new sport, visit FootGolf.net —

then get in on the action at Eagles Pride!

For details, call 253-967-6522. Eagles

and that means it’s time for parents to do some learning! But we’re not talking class-room-type learning — we’re going to the “MWR School of Fun!”1st period: Study Skills

Learning something new can be fun!

The Grandstaff and McChord libraries are

full of books, programs, computers, DVDs

and more, all geared to help you with

everything from learning a new language

or making curtains for your bedroom to

learning to create a website — for free.

You can even learn the art of home can-

ning in a class at the McChord Library

Saturday, Sept. 13 (advance registration

required).

Your library card (which also happens

to be your ID card) opens a world of op-

tions from your home computer as well.

Stop by either location to get started!

2nd period: Auto ShopLet the professionals at the McChord

and Lewis Main Auto Centers teach you

to maintain your vehicle.

“Most of the teaching is done at Mc-

Chord,” says Auto Center Director Ray

Daniels, “but for less than they charge

off-base to do the work, instructor/me-

chanics will teach you to change the oil,

change front and back brakes, tune-up a

4-, 6- or 8-cylinder engine and perform

preventive maintenance.”

Both shops have all the tools you need

to do most any automotive work. You just

pay for instructional classes, bay time or

special services you need.

3rd period: PE With seven different fitness centers,

personal trainers and a huge array of

classes at all times of the day, there’ll be

no skipping this class!

Want to get in shape, but need some

motivation? Jensen Family Health &

Fitness Center at Lewis Main offers a six-

week Fitness Bootcamp (next class starts

Monday, Oct. 20) designed for those who

are less fit but want to make a change in

their lives. The number of participants is

limited, so register now at Jensen Family

Health & Fitness Center, or go online

to JBLMmwr.com/fit_jensen and look for

Bootcamp info on the right.

Like to work independently? If you

need a little one-on-one fitness “tutor-

ing,” Certified Personal Fitness Train-

ers are available at no charge at Jensen,

McVeigh, Soldiers Field House and Wil-

son fitness centers.

If you work better in a group setting,

group fitness classes are available in yoga,

cycling, kickboxing, TRX, Zumba, Cross-

Fit, core strengthening, spin and weight

training.

4th period: Natural ResourcesConsider this your “outside-the-

classroom” classroom! JBLM’s Outdoor

Recreation program features some of the

greatest opportunities to get outside,

learn something new and have fun.

This is your chance to learn to kayak,

ride an ATV, improve your shooting skills

at one of the ranges or learn to scuba

dive. As soon as there’s enough snow in

the mountains, Outdoor Rec can arrange

for transportation, gear and ski or snow-

board lessons.

Learn about the area we live in with

hikes, introduction to mountain biking

trips or day trips to locations such as

Mount St. Helens and Victoria, B.C.

Or for off-beat seasonal tours that mix

food and drink with fun, take a wine and

beer tour by kayak Sunday, Sept. 21 (see

the Adventures section on page 24).

Go to JBLMmwr.com/outdoor_rec for

details, or call 253-967-6263.

Lunch Break!Relax for a few minutes and grab a bite

at one of MWR’s eateries on base!

If you’ve only got a little time, stop by

Habañero Mexican Grill at Whispering

Firs Golf Course at McChord Field. Every

burrito, taco and salad is made to order,

just the way you want it. They’re even

open before school for breakfast!

If you’ve got time for a sit-down lunch,

make your way to the Bistro at Russell

Landing for sandwiches, salads, burgers

and more, all served lakeside at Lewis

North.

5th period: PhysicsAn object in motion tends to stay in

motion — especially if you keep hitting it

with a golf club! Learn to golf at Whis-

pering Firs or Eagles Pride golf courses

with one of their on-staff pros. Whether

you’re a beginner or experienced player,

they’ll help improve your swing and your

score.

Scientifically curious about why bowl-

ing pins fall the way they do — or do you

just want to knock down as many as you

can? Learn to bowl or improve your skills

at Bowl Arena Lanes at Lewis Main, then

join a league. Look for morning leagues,

perfect for when the kids are at school!

6th period: ArtExpress yourself with a framing class

at the Arts and Crafts Center at McChord

Field. The instructors can teach you to

cut and assemble your own mats and

frames in an afternoon one-on-one class,

or you can bring a group of friends to all

learn together. Call 253-982-6718.

The Arts and Crafts Center can even

take your design and put it on a mug,

plus they can custom-embroider or

engrave it on a variety of materials. Call

253-982-6723 for details.

7th period: EconomicsSay you really do want to go back to

school, maybe start or finish a degree?

MWR can help you save money on books

at the MWR Bookstore located inside

Stone Education Center at Lewis Main.

You can always stop by to check out

what you need, but the MWR Bookstore

has a unique way to save you even more

by renting your college books online!

The site has more than six million books

to choose from and, in addition to sav-

ing you money, any proceeds go back to

MWR programs at JBLM. Go to Armed-

ForcesCollegeTextbooks.skyo.com and start

saving now.

While you’re in Stone Ed Center, stop

by the Battle Bean for a breakfast sand-

wich, lunch, cream cheese Danish or a

quick cup of coffee between classes.

Hurry, before the kids get home from

school!

School-age music mania summer camp a huge success

Each summer JBLM youth camps are

offered with weekly themes. This year,

music mania week was a huge hit!

Nearly 80 youth participated in music-

related activities — poetry, song writing

competitions and karaoke — and under

the direction of technology lab staffer

Ms. Rina, created their own tunes with

Acid Pro.

On stage, under bright lights and sur-

rounded by glittery decorations, the first-

ever Cascade Music Award Ceremony was

held July 18 with a red-carpet flair. The

center was packed with students, staffers

and others eager to find out the results.

The event kicked off with the singing

of the National Anthem by youth and a

performance of “I Believe I Can Fly” by

supervisory lead Sierra. Rina and youth

administrator Thomas presented the

awards to six youth.

The audience rocked out to winners’

tunes as each was given a trophy.

• Favorite: Tariq

• Most Creative: Isabel

• Best Tune: Riley T.

• Honorable mentions: Alyssa A.,

Sibley H. and Molly L.

After the awards presentation, Isabel

says she was surprised to win but felt

good. “If you put all the work into it, you

can win and do a lot of good stuff.”

Riley echoes the sentiment, saying,

“You don’t know how happy I am!” The

inspiration for his musical creation came

from old, new and crazy music, all inter-

twined.

This is just one example of great learn-

ing experiences for young, future leaders

and artists. For more information about

the school-age program, visit JBLMmwr.

com/cys.htm.

Freehold’s Engaged Theatre brought enhanced performance of Henry IV to JBLM

Since spring, youth at the Hillside

Youth Center–Teen Zone have been in-

volved in workshops with teaching artists

from Freehold’s Engaged Theatre.

All of their hard work and practice

culminated this summer with a fully

mounted professional production of

ow do you improve quality of life

as a Service Member, veteran,

retiree, civilian employee or Family

member? Identify a problem, propose a

solution and/or participate in the annual

Armed Forces Action Plan Conference!

The Teen AFAP Conference is Saturday,

Oct. 4 at the Family Resource Center at

Lewis Main. The AFAP Conference is

Oct. 15–17 at Stone Education Center,

Lewis Main.

Although a long-standing tradition

within the Army and IMCOM, JBLM

has adapted the program to address the

needs of our joint base. Not only is JBLM

looking to identifying issues to submit to

higher headquarters, the Joint Base Com-

mand Team and supporting agencies are

also looking for issues and recommenda-

tions for improvement right here at JBLM.

Here’s the skinny on AFAP At JBLM,

AFAP is an all-service initiative to identify

issues of concern to improve the overall

quality of life for Service Members and

their Families. Issues or recommenda-

tions are collected year-round and then

reviewed at the annual AFAP Conference

where the most critical well-being issues

are identified and presented to senior

leadership for resolution.

In preparation for the conference, issues

are divided into specific areas, such as

medical/dental, benefits and installation.

Additionally, volunteer delegates are

needed to participate. Delegates are as-

signed to working groups to review issues,

suggestions and concerns submitted. Del-

egates include Service Members, National

Guard and reservists, military retirees,

Family members and Department of the

Army civilian employees.

Delegates review and prioritize is-

sues, which are presented to senior

leadership at an outbrief session on the

last day of the conference. Issues that

are able to be resolved at the local level

are worked until deemed complete or

unattainable. Issues that are beyond

the scope of JBLM are forwarded to

the next level. Issues not resolved

at FORSCOM may be sent to DA for

inclusion into the AFAP process. Those

issues at DA are reviewed and worked

by the General Officer Steering Com-

mittee until completion.

Submit your issue or concern There are

three way to submit an issue for the AFAP

Conference: Go to JBLMafcs.com and

click on “Submit AFAP Issue,” pick up a

submission form at the Family Resource

Center (4274 Idaho Ave. at Lewis Main)

or e-mail usarmy.jblm.imcom.list.dfmwr-

[email protected].

Become a delegate or participate in the conference If you’re interested in

participating in the conference in any

capacity, call the JBLM AFAP office at

253-967-3689.

Five truths every parent needs to know

Attend the life-changing ScreamFree

Parenting event to revolutionize your Family

and learn the five truths every parent needs

to know. Join Armed Forces Community

Service and host Hal Edward Runkel Thurs-

day, Sept. 18, noon–1:30 p.m. at the Lewis

North Chapel. Registration is required; call

253-967-5901 or visit JBLMafcs.com.

ScreamFree Parenting is the principle-

based approach that’s inspiring parents to

move beyond many of the child-centered,

technique-based approaches and focus on

themselves. As a parent, you’re encouraged

to grow yourself up and calm yourself

down. By staying both calm and connect-ed with your kids, you begin to operate less out of your deepest fears and more out of your highest principles, revolutionizing

your relationships in the process.

Runkel, a former minister, is a licensed

marriage and Family therapist, relation-

ship coach, seminar leader, author of the

ground-breaking “ScreamFree Living”

book series and founder of The Scream-

Free Institute. Runkel has been success-

fully leading students, teachers, parents

and Families in his ScreamFree relation-

ship methods for more than a decade.

Calling all super spouses! Being a military spouse can be chal-

lenging. Learn to harness your sanity,

Reduce waste from the source. While recycling is a great way to reduce waste, an even better option is to avoid waste from the start. Look for products with reduced packaging, minimized toxic content, extended service life, reusability and improved efficiency. Buy used or recycled-content items and consider donat-ing items if you no longer use them. Also, buy local whenever possible.

Minimize hazardous materials. Hazardous items, such as toxic and flammable materials, pose risks to users and the surrounding environment. They are often more difficult and expensive to buy, manage and dispose. Pur-chase only the amount needed. Plus, look for non-hazardous (or less hazardous) alter-natives. Look for products with Green Seal, Ecologo and Design for the Environment certifications. Biobased content from plants or animals is also a great option!

Avoid Greenwashing. Many products and manufacturers make claims regarding the sustainability of their products. Some are true and some are misleading or false. The latter is referred to as “greenwashing.” If uncertain or unfamiliar with a product claim or certification, call the JBLM Sustainable Acquisition Program for assistance (253-966-6466/6463).

Benefits. Smarter and more sustainable buying practices can lower product lifecycle costs, improve health and safety, reduce legal liability and lessen management and maintenance requirements.

1. Check your credit report It’s important to review your credit report at least once a

year to verify the information is correct. This also provides an opportunity to clear up

any errors, such as credit limits, late payments or collection items that aren’t yours.

Free reports are available online at AnnualCreditReport.com.

2. Always pay your bills on time Delinquent payments, even if only a few days late,

and collection items have the biggest negative effect on your credit score. The pay-

ment history has the greatest effect on improving your score (it’s 35 percent of your

score’s calculation).

3. Pay down your credit card balances Another effective way to improve your credit

score is to pay down credit card debts. The amount owed on loans and credit cards

compared to your credit limits, known as debt-to-credit ratio, contributes 30 percent

to your score’s calculation.

4. Don’t close unused credit cards account Credit history accounts for 15 percent of

your credit score; the longer the history, the better your score, especially if the history

is positive. Canceling credit cards may hurt your credit score by raising the debt-to-

credit ratio and stopping the continuity of the credit history. If you don’t want to use

a card anymore, cutting it up without canceling the account may result in a better

credit score. However, if you’re being charged a monthly or annual fee to keep the ac-

count open, canceling may be the better option.

5. Get a credit card and gas store card Too many new accounts and applications at one

time result in a lower credit score, while diversity of credit types makes for a better credit

score. The remaining 20 percent of your credit score is equally divided between your new

accounts and the diversity of credit types you have. Making small monthly charges that

you pay off in full — and on time — each month will boost your credit score quickly.

If you have any questions or need help improving your credit score, call the AFCS

Financial Readiness Program at 253-967-1453 or go to JBLMfrp.CheckAppointments.com

to sign up for a class.

Spouses

Self-assess your five levels of fitness with CSF2 program online

Now through October, the Army’s

Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fit-

ness program —CSF2 — is conducting a

campaign to encourage spouses to take

the Global Assessment Tool (GAT 2.0).

The GAT 2.0 is a confidential, online,

self-assessment tool that provides users

with scores for their individual levels of

fitness in five dimensions: Family, Social,

Physical, Emotional and Spiritual. The

GAT 2.0 is an annual requirement for Sol-

diers, but there is also a tailored version

specifically for spouses.

In addition to providing users with

their individual scores in the five di-

mensions of strength, the GAT 2.0 also

provides the user’s RealAge®, which is a

metric that reveals a user’s biological age

compared to their calendar age. Users also

receive their results in the Performance

Triad of Sleep, Activity and Nutrition.

Self-awareness is only part of the ben-

efit of taking the GAT 2.0. Self-develop-

ment is the second part. After receiving

your scores based on the GAT 2.0, you’ll

be directed to ArmyFit™, which houses

the tools and resources to increase your

resilience and improve your overall resil-

ience and well-being. You’ll also receive

tailored recommendations to help you

navigate myriad resources within Army-

Fit™.

The strength of the Army comes

from its Family members. The GAT 2.0

provides spouses with the opportunity

to know themselves and stay psycho-

logically strong for themselves and their

Families.

To keep the recommendations provided

by GAT 2.0 relevant, CSF2 plans to keep

adding new content and functions to Ar-

myFit™ over the coming months. These

include the ability to sync a personal ac-

tivity, monitor data with the site to chart

a person’s daily physical activity and use

that data to compete with other users.

For more information on the GAT 2.0,

visit http://csf2.army.mil.

To take the GAT 2.0, visit https://armyfit.

The CSF2 program represents the Army’s investment in the readiness of the force and the quality of life of all. No matter what your level of overall fitness is, there’s always room for improvement. The GAT 2.0 is part of the ArmyFit™ online self-improvement platform. ArmyFit™ offers tailored recommendations based on your GAT 2.0 scores, to include recommendations for Comprehensive Resilience/Performance Modules to view, experts to follow and communities to engage. You can also blog, access online resources and fitness experts and take on self-improvement challenges with others on ArmyFit™. Fitness for the entire Family at JBLM From online self-assessment tools and time in a gym to programs for children and races, the Sports & Fitness program at JBLM has everything you need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Operation Kid Fit teaches youngsters importance of healthy lifestyle

Operation Kid Fit is available at JBLM!

Health educators at the Armed Forces

Wellness Center at Jensen Family Health

& Fitness Center are trained in the OKF

program and can refer Families.

OKF targets parents of children ages

4–11 who struggle to maintain a healthy

weight. Program goals include:

• Decrease in child body-mass index.

• Increase in parental confidence in

dealing with problem behaviors.

• Reduction in coercive parenting

behaviors.

• Improvement in child behavior.

The program helps parents to develop

effective strategies for managing their

child’s weight by introducing gradual,

permanent changes in their Family

lifestyle. OKF uses the childhood obesity

program “Lifestyle Triple P” curriculum.

The program focuses on:

• Improving children’s nutritional

intake.

• Increasing children’s physical activity.

• Improving parents communication

about health and nutrition.

• Reducing parenting stress associated

with raising healthy children.

The program is delivered over the

course of 12 weeks and consists of ten

90-minute interactive small group ses-

sions and two personalized phone calls

with an LTP-accredited facilitator. Group

sessions include directed and group in-

struction, DVD and live demonstrations

of parenting skills, rehearsal of skills

using role-playing, peer modeling and

small-group problem-solving exercises.

Parents are expected to attend and par-

ticipate in all class sessions, complete all

homework assignments and participate in

the phone calls.

In order to make the program more

convenient to attend and increase the

number of participants who would ben-

efit from the program, the program will

also be adapted to be offered online. The

online version will follow the same 12-

week curriculum but use a virtual class-

room for participants to access at a time

during the week convenient for them.

Participants will view class session videos

of the directed facilitation, completing

exercises and homework online and par-

ticipating in class discussions via discus-

sion boards. Facilitators will manage

the class and maintain contact with the

participants via email and phone calls.

To learn more about Operation Kid Fit

or for information on participating in

the program, email molly.j.koczarski.ctr@

mail.mil or 253-982-0531.

OKF was approved by the Senior Mili-

tary Medical Advisory Board as one of the

Military Health System Obesity Deep Dive

innovations to receive funding to address

obesity with military beneficiaries. The

program was funded for a one-year pilot

project to demonstrate its effectiveness in

achieving program outcomes within a mili-

tary population.

Children

Do you have trouble getting your child to eat healthy? Are you worried your child is developing an unhealthy lifestyle? Join Operation Kid Fit to learn positive parenting skills to improve nutrition and physical activity of your children ages 4–11. To learn more about OKF, call 253-982-0531.
