What a great summer! All of this year’s cruises have been great. A big thanks to Lane Langford for all his work arranging them. For me, it was especially true for the cruise on August 15th to Port Browning. There were a couple of reasons for this. This was where, last year, I tried to blow myself up and, of course, the Port Browning staff remembered that. Then on the way home, the winds were calm, the temperature warm, and the water was like glass. I was riding along listening to music and generally enjoying the day, when between Stuart and Waldron Islands, I caught something out of the corner of my eye. On the port side, slightly behind me and maybe 100 yards away, I caught sight of a breaching 20—25’ Cuvier’s Beaked Whale. Cuvier’s are not unknown in these waters, but not seen that often either. I stopped the boat, grabbed my camera, and was able to get a few photos of it jumping and gener- ally having a good time. I think this photo is the best. Up until now, I had never been part of any sailing event. I volunteered to help out on the Committee Boat for the annual “Lopez Cup” sail event on August 23rd. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and had a great time. Along with Judy Welker, Jim McBain and Curt Bonelli (thanks to Curt for the use of his boat), we validated the good start of each boat and recorded their finish time. There were 15 boats participating in the race. The cup winner, for the second year in a row, was Mike Kaminskas with Nancy Crowell sailing Breathless Mahoney. Thanks to all participants and to Russ Johnson for organizing the event. Continued on page 3

3RD LOPEZ CUP IN THE HISTORY BOOK By Russ Johnson, LIYC Sailing Chair

The third annual Lopez Cup was a record event in terms of entries—6 in Class A and 9 in Class B. There was a strong

flood tide throughout, making for a very tactical race. The Lopez Island side paid off early, but the boats that crossed

over to the San Juan side stayed in light but steady wind

and picked up the reverse current. They were the first

around the weather mark buoy and sailed home on the

flooding current. Mike Kaminskas (last year’s winner) with

Nancy Crowell did an outstanding job and finished first

overall,(sailing Breathless Mahoney, ironically, a boat he

had just purchased from Dave Welker and Russ Johnson.)

Also, doing particularly well was Jeremy Gicker, a late entry

in his Santana 25, who was second overall and first in Class

B by a mile.

Special thanks to Curt Bonelli for supplying (and manning)

the official Committee Boat, also crew Judy Welker , Jim

McBain and Jim Ghinazzi.

COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued

We have two remaining boating events this year. First is the “Spam Carving Contest” outing on September 6th

and 7th at Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island. Then our last cruise of the year is to Genoa Bay, B.C on September

19-21. Make your reservations for Genoa Bay now by calling 1-800-572-6481 or 1-250-746-7621. Let’s end

the LIYC boating year with a real flourish. Please plan to attend, and let Lane Langford know.

And don’t forget, it’s almost here, our next General Membership Meeting is on September 17th. This is a pot-

luck dinner, so bring your favorite dish. Don’t forget your own dishes and utensils. We are fortunate to have a

planned presentation by George and Stepper LeBoutillier. Please let Doug Cram know if you can help by host-

ing the event (360-298-5803). See you at the Islander.

As boaters, we have a built-in way to honor our national flag. Remember to fly your “colors” every time you

are out on your boat. Here is a link to the proper code for flying the ensign and other flags and burgees:

NEW MEMBER APPLICATION: Tom and Lisa DiGiorgio have

applied for LIYC membership. Says Tom, “We bought a home on Fisher-

man Bay last year and now plan on making Lopez our full-time home.

We first explored Lopez when Lisa was the Camp Nor’wester food service

manager 30+ years ago. Since then we have spend many summers sail-

ing in the San Juans. We see some type of cruising boat in our future so

we can join in the LIYC adventures!” Welcome Tom and Lisa !!
