Message from the President

By Felix Peguero, Edward Jones Investments

Family is arguably the most important thing in my life, second only to my

relationship with God. Recently I’ve had the privilege of spending some quality vacation time with my family.

Before I tell you about our time together this summer, I want to take you back to 1992 when my father took our family on a

European vacation that allowed us to experience the cultures of Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy, and many others. One of the highlights of our trip was spending time with our cousin in Barcelona, Spain. We also attended some of the Olympic events in Barcelona that year.

Fast forward 20 years, the Olympics are being hosted in London, my cousin has passed on (God rest her soul), and I find myself taking my family on a European vacation. We arrived in Barcelona just in time for my cousins’ memorial in celebration of her life, and my parents, who where supposed to be in Holland, made a surprise visit. We spent quality time together breaking bread and experiencing Spain, Italy, and France. My daughters shared with me that the Coliseum, Sistine Chapel, and the City of Pompeii were their favorites.

As many of you know, I grew up in Miami, Florida. In an effort to spend time with more of my family, this past August we took a trip to Florida to visit my 93-year-old grandmother and my 3-month-old niece. It was hot and humid, but we had a great time catching up and spending quality time together.

Some of you may be saying to yourselves, that’s great but I have a business to run. I don’t have the privilege of taking time off. If I’m not at work I’m not generating income and it costs

money to take a vacation. As a business owner, it is a challenge to reward yourself with a family vacation. To ensure your small business runs smoothly while you’re away, incorporate these three tips for a worry-free vacation:

Let go of Control: A difficult aspect of business ownership is the ability to concede control. Taking a vacation is the perfect opportunity to test the abilities of your trusted staff members to handle the ship. Have your staff make a list of top priorities to have them buy into the accountabilities of running the office before you leave. Remember to let go of control and you’ll have greater success in delegation.

To Call or Not to Call: Should you call the office while you’re on vacation? Over 40% of entrepreneurs stay in touch with the office on most vacation days and 29% contact their business every day, according to a recent Hudson survey by Rasmussen Reports.

Prior to your departure, determine whether you’ll take the approach of no contact (unless there is an emergency) or call in occasionally. If you really can’t get your business out of your mind while on the beach, a 10-minute debriefing with your staff can help calm your fears. Be careful not to undermine your delegations to your employees.

Have an Emergency Plan: The best way to have peace of mind while on vacation is to have a contingency plan ready in case of emergency. For small business owners with employees, provide staff with the when and why to contact you in case of a dire situation. For the self-employed professional, such as a solo computer consultant, make arrangements with other trusted peers to deal with any of your customer emergencies.

Vacations can be a much-deserved time away from the office for the small business owner. If you’re worried your business can crumble during a week off, it’s time to re-examine your business operations and management abilities. Take the vacation you need for the sake of your customers, employees, and future growth of your company.

At your SERVICE,

Felix PegueroLacey Chamber President

Members are the lifeblood and reason for the existence

of any organization. This is especially true with the Lacey Chamber of Commerce. You, our members, provide the funding, sponsorships, and inspiration to accomplish the mission of the Chamber of being your Premier Business Resource. Many of you are inspired to provide

leadership and participation in our committees, fund-raisers, and community support events. You participate in many of the events the Lacey Chamber of Commerce has become renowned for: the BBQ Festival, innovative auctions, and exciting golf tournaments. You rallied around our fundraising efforts to save the annual fireworks show for the community and you help support other great community events like Lacey Loves to Read, The Spring Fun Fair, and the Summer’s End Car Show. The members of the Lacey Chamber of Commerce are engaged and committed to the growth and success of the Lacey and Thurston County communities.

Coming off of the great successes of these events, and with an eye toward developing greater value for you, we are embarking on a two month growth emphasis. This will help us move toward our goal of growing by one new member a day for the next 61 days. Stephanie and I will be looking to develop relationships with new and existing businesses to add one new member per day to bring your new opportunities to make them your clients, customers, suppliers, or partners. How can I help? I’m glad you asked! You have people that you do business with every day that would benefit from knowing

other members of the Lacey Chamber of Commerce. Bring them to our Forum on September 5 to hear from the candidates for the Thurston County Commission, or bring them to the 5:01 Surge at the Hawks Prairie Campus of SPSCC on September 13. You can also ask them to accept a call from me and help open the door to that business owner. With over 2,700 business licenses issued in the City of Lacey and our current membership of 331, you stand an 88% chance that your favorite person to do business with is not yet a member of the Lacey Chamber of Commerce. This is a great way for you to show what a valuable partner that person is and help to solidify your relationship with them.

With the consistent theme of developing value for our members, having more members means there will be more opportunities to allow you to be involved with the Chamber and help create activities and councils that will take on some business or personal area that you are passionate about. More members also means a wider network with more potential of meeting new clients, customers, suppliers, or partners you have been searching for. Another value addition is what was announced in the July Thrive. The Lacey Chamber of Commerce now has an easy monthly payment plan available to make it easier to start or maintain your membership. Call the office for more details.

Lacey and Thurston County are great places to do business and the Lacey Chamber of Commerce will continue in its mission of being your Premier Business Resource.

‘Me’ Time and ‘Work’ Time: How Can They Co-exist?Submitted by Laura Fore, Fore Counseling Services

When we are at work we have deadlines and expectations to

accomplish as much as possible under high-stress circumstances. However, when the cycle of focusing more on work and taking less care of ourselves happens, it can result in burnout. Our working lives become one rushed task to the next. Then it is hard to get

motivated for self-care and excuses become routine. It too often becomes go to work…crash…go to work…crash.

Mental wellness plays a vital part in keeping the balance between our needs and our wants. How can we challenge ourselves in all of our roles, whether at work, at home, or with family and friends and still have time to do ourselves right? There are 168 hours in a week, let’s rate some of these hours to see if you are spending them as well as you should—for you.

Do you go to bed and immediately try to fall asleep for a few hours? Do you toss and turn hoping your mind will quiet so you can get that sleep you so desperately need after a long, hard day at the office? Do you wake up and run out the door? Do you grab something fast to eat or skip the meal altogether?

If you answered any of these questions with a yes, I have one more question to ask: how is that working for you? As you must already know, you are not a machine; you need more than just oil and a battery to function. If you are not taking time to do basic self-care, it should be no surprise that you’re mental health is also showing signs of wear and tear. After all, your body is not built like a car, so you cannot expect to go 60 miles an hour and stop on a dime or expect it to go from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds for any length of time.

Making just a few simple adjustments to your current routine will show amazing results throughout your day. Consider taking this challenge:

Find 20-30 minutes during each day; it can be at any increment (5 minutes, 10 minutes) as long as it totals this amount at some point in the day. Schedule it and keep to it.

This time is not with the intent to fall asleep, but to unwind. You don’t have to do anything, just lie back, close your eyes, and breathe. If this is something that seems inconceivable to you, it is probably long overdue.

Now, let’s talk about your eating habits. I am just going to say it…if you are doing the drive-through express routine every day, you are not doing yourself any favors. Your body does not ask for much in this area, just to have an idea of when it is getting food and to have some variety to operate at its best. A high-fat or high-carbohydrate meal is not going to keep you going for long. Also, going down the road and shoving food in your mouth is a perfect storm for building anxiety and increasing stress. It can be a challenge to sit down and enjoy

a meal when it is so easy to grab something fast, but that little bit of time makes all the difference.

Finally, the last thing to do is find pure enjoyment in your day. It does not have to be a big deal or cause the axis to change the course of Earth. To take a mere five minutes a day to act like a five-year-old is all that is really being suggested. Remember being five and having no worries about anything? Are you capable of letting go of work

expectations and family obligations for five minutes? I bet that this is possible. Trust me, your mental health will thank you for it!

Hmmm... Didn’t Know That!

All of the lumber used in the construction of Woodlawn Funeral home was logged off of Burgman Family property.

Making just a few simple adjustments to your current routine will show amazing results throughout your day.

August ForumBy Ambassador Shelley Nicholson, D Zines: Creative Solutions and Graphic Design

This month’s Lacey Chamber Forum lunch was full of energy and excitement. You can definitely see that the sunshine making an appearance had people smiling

more. It probably didn’t hurt that all the members and guests of the Chamber lunch were encouraged to stand up and dance to a few “fun” tunes before the taping of the Forum began, but the excitement did not end there.

Once the taping of the Lacey Chamber Forum lunch began, President Felix Peguero began by having all new Chamber members introduce themselves and their business. Felix proudly announced that we now have 323 members and are on track to meeting our goal of 350 members by the end of this year.

Felix then introduced our Forum sponsor—South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC). SPSCC was represented by Noelle Rubadue, Associate Dean for Enterprise Training. Noelle shared with us the opportunities offered at SPSCC for short-term specialized training, consulting services, and their upcoming 5:01 Surge on September 13. Their 5:01 Surge will be an open house sampler of the classes they offer, changing classes every 30 minutes. Some of the trainings that will be showcased are computer training, yoga, and project management. We learned that this is a great way to find out about classes that may help your business or provide you with personal enrichment. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for this event.

Felix then introduced the August media sponsor—Morningside; a private not-for-profit community rehabilitation program that provides employment services to individuals with disabilities. Jim Larson, president and CEO, shared that they are revving up for their Morningside Ride: Road Challenge 2012 scheduled to be held on Sunday, September 16. A fun-filled video was shown with a few well-respected Chamber members showing off their acting skills and how to participate in the Morningside Ride. This event is a test of skill, smarts, and savvy; the drivers and navigator teams will be led on a challenging course throughout Thurston County. Starting at Olympia High School the teams will find themselves searching for clues, finding answers, and making pit stops. Here’s the catch—winning teams are not selected based on course time, but on the completion and

accuracy of their answers to the clues. The ride ends with a finish line party at the Lucky Eagle Casino that includes lunch, raffles, games, and team awards. So sign up to join many of your fellow Chamber members on the Morningside Ride and help make this event a ROARING success. “Ride On!”

Just when you thought you were going to sit back for the next twenty minutes and listen to our next speaker inform us about “Workplace Wellness,” we were entertained and informed by Dr. Scott Moore, DC. Since 2009, Scott, with his wife Kallie, owns and operates Moore Chiropractic, helping others promote general health, injury recovery, and preventative care.

Scott shared with us that, although the United States makes up only 5% of the world’s population, we consume up to 50% of the world’s pharmaceuticals. This is where we as employees

and employers need to practice basic workplace wellness to prevent the need for pharmaceuticals. Scott shared

that practicing good ergonomics can prevent Forward Head Posture (FHP) also known as Corporate Syndrome in the business world or Student Syndrome for many of us parents who have children

that love playing video and computer games .

When Dr. Moore first mentioned Forward Head Posture, it was hard not to chuckle as the entire room suddenly sat up straight.

Once we learned that the average head weighs between 19 and 21 pounds and that there is a laundry list of ailments that are caused by FHP such as headaches, muscle imbalances, and up to 30% decreased lung capacity, we all continued to sit up straight. We were given tips such as drink plenty of water, practice good nutrition, exercise, and, if you must sit at a computer, you should be looking directly at the monitor not down to see the screen and keep your elbow and knees bent at about 90 degree angles. Ladies, those high heels are not good for you, nor is carrying a heavy purse, but if you must carry a purse or bag, switch it from shoulder to shoulder periodically. Also occasionally pull your shoulders and head back 2-3 seconds throughout the day and s-t-r-e-t-c-h—the doctor said so.

And last but not least, this month the Kidwiler Scholarship fund raised $283.00. Way to help out the students in our community!

The summer is almost over and as kids head back to school and the football season begins we, at the Chamber office, would like to reflect on what was a great season. We had a successful golf tournament

in June at the Golf Club at Hawks Prairie and followed that up with an overwhelmingly successful BBQ Festival at Cabela’s in July. Highlights of these events included golfing in the rain, a hefty amount of raffle prizes, bounce houses, a fishing pond, live entertainment, and appearances by Blitz, Blue Thunder and The Sea Gals. One moment that thousands of people and Chamber members alike are not soon to forget is the ever popular ACU Wing Eating Contest. We would like to give a big thank you to the Native New Yorker for providing wings and workers at the South Sound BBQ Festival. The Native New Yorker’s contribution helped create a messy, comical, and fun event for the participants and audience. The Chamber looks forward to another year of wings in 2013!

Thank You, Native New Yorker

End the summer in style! Stroll among a huge array of collector cars and vote for your favorite! Listen to live music, enjoy a sampling of local cuisine and enter to win many great prizes! Yes, it’s time once again for the Summer’s End at Lacey. We are in our 11th year of the event and are looking for local businesses to participate in this great community event taking place on Saturday, September 15th at Huntamer Park. Your business can be featured as one of the 48 trophy sponsors, have a vendor booth at the event or donate items to the raffle or participant give-a-way bags! If you would like to contribute, contact Stephanie Hemphill at the Chamber Office, [email protected] or (360)491-4141.

Ambassador Ross Irwin and wife, Trivonna Irwin, introduce the Lacey Chamber crowd to the Energy Efficiency 5:01 Surge at Cabinets by Trivonna on Tuesday, July 31.

Over 50 people surged to a truly energizing event at Cabinets by Trivonna on July 31. Puget Sound Energy sponsored the event that featured Thurston

Energy demonstrating and displaying many ways that businesses can be more efficient in lighting their offices, showrooms, and warehouses. LED and fluorescent lighting were displayed in ways that showed off their effectiveness in lighting and efficiency regarding power consumption. Attendees enjoyed stimulating networking and a great variety of food from Native New Yorker making this a very successful 5:01 Surge. There were five guests in attendance that resulted in four new members! Thank you for inviting new businesses to our events. You are the greatest recruiting tool we have!

The Ambassador’s Corner

What is your favorite Ambassador memory?

My favorite memory so far was being involved in the South Sound BBQ Fest. It was a ton of work, but we met some awesome people and I got to eat some of the best BBQ I have ever had. Definitely excited for next year!

Favorite Childhood Toy?

What is the first thing you recommend someone new to Lacey to do?

Check out the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, Its packed with things to see and it’s definitely a good place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life...

Automotive Tip of the MonthHere’s a tip that may save you a breakdown some day. It’s a fact that the in-ground tanks at gas stations are never spotlessly clean after years of service. There is usually some water condensation and dirt lying at the bottom of the tank, which is normal and causes no harm

because the fuel pickup for the pumps is above the very bottom of the tank where the contaminants settle. When a tanker truck delivers fuel, it unloads thousands of gallons of fuel down into the tanks in 10 to 15 minutes, which naturally stirs everything up all together. Of course, it all settles to the bottom again. My tip is this: I personally never fuel my vehicle when a tanker truck is present, and if I have seen a tanker truck at my favorite station, I wait until later or the next day to fill up, after things have “settled down.”

How long have you been an Ambassador?

9 months

Why did you choose to become an Ambassador?

To me, being an ambassador is a no brainer; not only do I get a chance to help an amazing organization that does great things for this community, but I also get to meet and mingle with some of the best people this city has to offer.

What benefits does your business get from you being an Ambassador?

Well, I guess the best benefit of being an ambassador is the opportunities to be at the forefront of what’s happening in and around our city. We have been involved in some amazing events, and our business definitely does not suffer from it. When we first started this business, the hardest part was getting in front of people, now we have ample opportunity to do that and it has helped us grow immensely.

What do you enjoy the most about being an Ambassador?

The people we get to meet. We have met an incredible array of people who I am now proud to call friends, to me this is what it’s all about.
