How did you get started in the insurance business?I got started in the business in 1987. I was 22 years old and 6 months out of college when my brother’s girlfriend, who was working as an agent for Commonwealth Insurance, called me. She said she was leaving the company to go back to college and that there would be an opening. She wanted to know if I was still looking for work and would be interested in selling insurance. I told her yes and soon interviewed with her manager. My father had been in the business for a while before he passed away and I knew other successful insurance agents in my hometown. I knew their personalities and figured if they could do it, I could do it. So, I accepted the job…and the rest is history!

What tools are you using to obtain success? There are several tools I use to achieve success. I use the company’s sales planner to keep up with my daily plans. It helps keep me organized and helps me keep track of all of my phone calls, interviews and service work. I also use it to record personal and family events so that I can keep track of what’s going on with my children’s school activities and sports. If it’s happening, it’s in my planner. I try not to miss out on anything! Secondly, I use a referred lead folder to keep track of my referrals. All leads are transferred or re-written on referral sheets in this folder after they are obtained at the end of each day. I transfer them from the backs of business cards, apps or other sheets of paper where they were first written. They are too valuable to lose or forget where you put them. Lastly, I use a hot prospect list for all my daily contacts. I keep track of everything from contacts to referrals and existing customers and update the list daily for follow-up calls. It’s so easy to forget to call someone back or not follow-up when you are supposed to.

What’s one of your biggest professional challenges? My biggest challenge as an agent is to keep doing what I have been doing and stay on top. It’s easier getting there than staying there. There are so many emotional ups and downs in this business. It is easy to lose your way from time to time. You can’t allow yourself to get too high or too low. It doesn’t matter how well you did yesterday or how well you did last year, you have to keep doing it week after week. You have to stay consistent and focused on what you are supposed to be doing each and every week. It’s not always that easy!

What is one of your personal goals for this year?My goal for the rest of this year is to finish in the top five agents for Achievement Awards and to make the Circle of Excellence again. My goal for next year, and every year, is to at least make Pinnacle Club and try to finish in the top five for the Leader’s Conference. There is always a lot of competition at the top!

What advice would you give a rookie Agent? My advice to rookie agents is to pay attention to the basics. Be good at getting referrals, make your contacts every day and schedule as many good quality interviews as possible. The best agents are the ones that are good at getting referred leads and are good at using the phone for appointments. Don’t be satisfied just doing enough to get by. Do your best to be great. Keep yourself organized and follow up!
