The 18,000-seat venue features an iconic curving roof structure and dynamic façade that position the arena among the most prominent and recognizable buildings in the city. A truly multi-purpose venue, the arena has been designed to host basketball, hockey, end stage and center stage concerts, circuses and ice events, and open-floor exhibitions. Our team integrated structural and enclosure engineering services to provide a holistic design solution for the complete building enclosure. We performed extensive comparative studies of seven distinct roof framing configurations to determine the most efficient, functional and constructible long-span structural system. We then employed state-of-the-art parametric modeling techniques to optimize truss spans and depths, and digitally rationalize the complex geometry of a roof and façade that merge multiple intersecting curves and surfaces into a continuous, seamless design theme. Walter P Moore introduced geometric repetition into the structural design for fabrication and erection economy, and provided accurate mate- rial quantity estimates and detailed steel con- nection information early in the design phase to establish cost certainty. We also designed a highly-flexible and high-capacity rigging grid that allows the facility to accommodate a wide variety of concerts and other events. To respond to the harsh winter loading conditions in Milwaukee, we worked in collaboration with wind and climate specialists to identify specific roof shapes and facade materials and seamlessly integrated barriers, melt and removal systems into the structural design to effectively manage snow and ice. Hello All,

I hope everyone had a great summer and welcome back from the break of our monthly meetings. We have had a great year so far with generally increasing attendance and great presentations. We have excellent presentations booked for the remainder of the year. So please come out and support the chapter.

As mentioned in the June meeting we are al-ready working on presentations for the 2019 calendar. We encourage recommendations for topics and presenters. Please let us know if there is a topic of interest or a presentation that you would like to see. Our goal is to have topics of interest that are pertinent to you.

President’s Corner (continued)Dan Barbuto, PE We are looking for volunteers to be involved in SEAoT. The upcoming end of the year means election are coming. Following past-practice, Secretary has become the main candidate for Vice President, VP becomes the main candidate for President, and Presidents becomes past president. We are looking for nominations for Secretary for the 2019 year.

We also have openings in our support positions. Jennifer Ju, who currently serves as newsletter editor for the past four years will be stepping down at the end of 2018. Stacy Chu, who has served as the SEAot website manager has moved to North Carolina. Rick Miles, our past presi-dent is currently managing the website in her absence. Both Jennifer and Stacy have done a great job and have been a big part of our com-munication and organization.

We are looking for volunteers to serve as the newsletter editor and a website manager. The work required for these roles is not much. But spreading the responsibilities over a group of volunteers helps to spread the load. Please consider contributing and contact us if you are interested.

Secretary’s Corner Emily R. McCarthy, Ph.D., P.E.Welcome back SEAoT Houston/Gulf Coast. Summer is over, school is in session, and our fall meetings are kicking off with Rachel Calafell of Walter P Moore on September 20th.

Our June meeting had a strong showing for Dr. Hakim Bouadi, also of Walter P Moore, who introduced design concepts for externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) repairs and introduced American Concrete Institute (ACI) 440 requirements for using and designing FRP repairs.

Dr. Bouadi related how FRP can add capacity to existing structural systems that have seen damage or deterioration, or that are being modified in a change of use project. He noted, importantly, that regardless of the initiating factor, for FRP to be a viable strengthening method the existing members without FRP are required to resist, at minimum, design service loads.

Additionally, FRP loses strength in high temperature conditions (140 – 180 ˚F) and cannot be protected from fire. Current technology cannot produce an epoxy bonding agent that can withstand temperatures on the order of steel’s capacity, therefore the engineer of record should carefully consider the applicability of FRP on specific projects.

2018 Officers and Directors

Where FRP is allowed by city codes and where conditions comply with ACI 440 requirements, FRP can effectively add positive or negative moment capacity to members or add shear capacity to members.

FRP is applied in layers, the more layers the more capacity, though more than five layers of FRP are not as effective due to the potential for bond failure.

Dr. Bouadi’s talk sparked many follow up questions throughout the meeting. As structural engineers we are often tasked with solving difficult and unique problems. In settings such as our monthly SEAoT meetings, we can discuss in an open and engaging environment the successes of our fellow engineers, learning and growing skills to bring excellence to all our projects.

I encourage you to come to our next meetings and be part of enhancing SEAoT Houston/Gulf Coast.

And if you are interested in high school volunteer activities in the community please contact Emily R. McCarthy ([email protected])
