This third Sunday of September isdesignated by the Bishops of theUnited States as Catechetical Sunday.I guess they choose this time of the

year because Catholic schools haveresumed, even up north, and parishreligious education classes are startingup again. At each Mass this weekendthere will be a blessing of the catechistsand classroom assistants who help SisterMarie by volunteering their talents inthe faith formation program for publicschool children; those who volunteer to teach and support the special sessions forsacramental preparation; and also our full-time Catholic school teachers who bytheir words and example, whatever their specific subjects, are handers-on of thefaith. We are extremely grateful for what they give to the parish.

I think that Catechetical Sunday is also meant to be a reminder, at thebeginning of the academic year, that we all have a responsibility for ongoingformation in the faith - we all have more to learn about the mysteries of GodThat is particularly true this year when the theme forCatechetical Sunday iDo This in Memory of Me (from Luke 22:19). The Bishops have chosen toconcentrate on the Eucharist because they are very aware that in only ten weekson the first Sunday of Advent, we will begin to use the Third Typical Edition othe Roman Missal, with new translations of the prayers which have becomefamiliar to us. This will be a big change - for a time we will really have toconcentrate on what we are saying and hearing at Mass - but the Bishops haveexpressed the hope that we will be moved to a more intense participation in theSunday celebration of Mass, a more worthy reception of Holy Communion, and

a more intentional embrace of the Church's sacramental life and mission

Special care is always taken in the catechesis for First Communion but thaspecial care must not allow us to forget that First Communion is only thebeginning of a lifetime need for growth in attempting to understand aninexhaustible mystery: the mystery of the Eucharistic celebration. There are manyways in which this growth can take place: we now have classes for the parents oFirst Communion children, so that they can deepen their understanding of theEucharist; there are some great books on the Eucharist, including recent onefrom Scott Hahn (The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth) and RonaldRolheiser(Our One Great Act of Fidelity: Waiting for Christ in the Eucharist); thepractice of Eucharistic adoration (held at Saint Charles on Friday mornings)

introduces many people to a new dimension of the mystery; and those who areEucharistic ministers or take communion to the sick find themselves learning aswell as serving. In addition we should all train ourselves to pay closer attention tothe words, signs, rituals, and symbols used in the Eucharist, and hopefully the newtranslation of the Roman Missal will challenge us to do that.

On the four Sundays of Advent this year, starting with the Saturday eveningMass of November 26th 2011 when we begin to use the new translation of thewords of the Mass, I will be preaching about the Eucharist. It is the occasionwhich draws us together every Sunday. It is Gods chosen way to come to usJesus asked us to do this in memory of me - let us never tire of trying tounderstand all that He meant.
