24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 50:5-9a / Jas 2:14-18 / Mk 8:27-35

Who Do You Say that I Am?

What about today? How do we answer the question of who Jesus is? We can answer with our creed, but it is a pretty intellectual statement. The closest we get to an answer are statements: “For us ... and for our salvation, he came down from heaven. ... For our sake he was crucified.”

If we want to answer the question with heart and soul as well as mind, we need to encounter Christ, walk with him and talk with him. In his latest apostolic exhortation, Pope Francis asks, “Are there moments when you place yourself quietly in the Lord’s presence, when you calmly spend time with him, when you bask in his gaze? Do you let his fire inflame your heart? (Gaudete et Exultate #151).”

As Catholics, our poor tradition of reading Scripture has left many unaware that the Church “has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord’s Body” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #103). In light of that, Pope Francis reminds us that we can encounter Christ through prayerful reading of the Bible in which we allow God’s word “to enlighten and renew us” (Evangelii Gaudium #152-153).

When we spend time encountering Christ and allow him to enlighten and renew us, our way of living will be our final answer to who we say he is.

WHAT IS BREAKING BREAD?

Breaking Bread is a Parish Program open to all adult members. It is an awesome opportunity to meet other members of our Parish community in a relaxed, stress-free, fun environment. When you sign up you will be put in a group with 6 or 8 people, and take turns being the hosts during the next few months. This is a way to get to know people you only see at Mass. You host once and are a guest at the other dinners. Don’t worry about being a good cook-this is not a cooking contest. Costco’s lasagna works great!

Please call the office if you would like to attend.

Saint Vincent de Paul

To St. Cyril's parishioners: As you donate to

help the poor in our area, you are a sign of

God's love to those who are suffering, and

you give hope and joy.

Thank you for your support of our mission.

Dear Pastor,

I think a lot more people would come to your

church if you moved it to Disneyland.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

AND

YOUTH MINISTRY

September 16, 2018 Page 6

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES BEGIN

All families should be registered for the fall R.E. classes. Only registered students will be admitted to

classes. Forms are available at both church doors and can be returned to the church office with your pay-

ment. The registration form is white and you may fill in one per family. The new health emergency form is

blue and you must fill out one per child. Families who register several children can pay a discounted price.

Classes begin today, Sunday, September 16th from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM for Pre-Kindergarten through

M.S. Youth Group. High School Youth Group also begins today after the 10:30 Mass from 11:45 AM to

1:00 PM. We still need a few volunteers for leading our Children’s Liturgy of the Word for the 10:30 AM

Mass. If you are interested in joining our Children’s Ministry Team please contact the church office.

First Reconciliation and Communion Children in second grade or older who are baptized in the Catholic Church are eligible to participate in our class for First Communion. If your child has attended RE classes regularly in the first year of preparation you may register him/her for this class. You will need to give a copy of his/her Catholic Baptism Certificate to the office when registering for class. If your child has not recently attended our program or any other RE program or Catholic School register your child for RE in their current grade level and after one year they can be in the class. This option will take two years to complete. If you have questions concerning this policy please contact Reli-gious Education Coordinator Mary Ellen in the church office Wednesday through Friday. All registered chil-dren must turn in a newly completed Health Emergency Form for this school year. It is the blue form at the church doors; fill in one per child, please. THERE IS A PARENT MEETING ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 AT 9:15 IN THE FIRESIDE ROOM

St. Cyril Confirmation Program

We welcome our youth to our Confirmation Program. Confirmation is a new beginning in one’s life of full

participation and responsibility in the Catholic Church. As one of the Sacraments of Initiation, it is an amazing sign of

God’s love and presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit will help you become a more mature follower of Christ as you

walk in His footsteps. Students must be high school age, and have participated in the previous year of Religious

Education here, or at a Catholic School or Church to register for Confirmation. Those in the program will attend

classes about Confirmation and their faith life, be a member of our High School Youth Group, and come to Mass

weekly. There is also a weekend retreat some time during the year. Teens should do service hours in the community

or here at church. Catholic Baptism certificates must be included in your registration materials with your payment for

youth group unless your teen was baptized here at St. Cyril. We are having a Confirmation Parent Meeting on

Sunday, October 7th at 11:45 AM in the Fireside Room to cover the requirements and schedule for the year.
