Back to School season is a great time to reflect about where you’ve been and re-aim about where you’re headed. As children and families begin this new year, I pray that all of us will journey this whole year with and for Jesus.

The primary reason that kids attend school at any level from Pre-K to Graduate programs is to learn. The youngest children learn their alphabet and its phonics. The oldest youth learn their Calculus and Physics. Whatever the stage in school, being a student is all about being a learner. The same is true in the journey of life. We are called to be life-long learners, students, and followers of Jesus, Himself. The day that students stop learning will be the day that their academic career becomes off-course, and the day that we stop learning and growing in Christ is the day that we get spiritually off-course. Christianity is not a religion; it’s a dynamic relationship with the living God. The day we stop growing in Christ is the day we start dying. Stay alive, stay abiding, stay a learner and grower in Jesus all the days of your life.

When children go back to school, some kids can’t wait to get back to their math books, but most kids love school because it’s where their friends are. Elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges are all about developing academic aptitude, but they are certainly all about relationships. Just as kids need friends, so do followers of Christ need brothers and sisters who will journey with them and for them through all the challenges, struggles, and joys of life. Genesis tells us that we are created in the very image of our relational God and that everything in creation was “Good!” Only one thing was not good: “It is not good for man to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18) To be a follower of Jesus means that we are a vital part of His Body, and as interdependent parts of His Body, we are necessarily and essentially connected to each other. As you start this new school year, don’t settle for isolation or loneliness. Find a group, a class, a study, some place where you are required to share your faith and your life with others. If I belong to Christ and you belong to

Christ, then we belong to each other!

When kids go back to school, they have to be prepared. That means school supplies, maybe some new clothes, and of course getting the back packs packed (Don’t forget “The Blessing of Backpacks at all services on 8/23). In the school of life with Jesus what we have to make sure we get packed in our hearts every day is the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22). This is the equipment that God has given us to do life and relationships. We don’t buy these supplies, we receive these from the Great Supplier, the Holy Spirit, Himself. As we make ourselves available to be filled with the Spirit of Jesus daily, we give Him room to make His character to become our character.

Of course when children go back to school they have to remember that being a good student involves studying. If you don’t study, you don’t learn. If you don’t learn, you don’t grow. If you don’t grow, you’ll never be equipped for life. Being in the school of life with Jesus involves studying His Word. Jesus said it simply, “If you love me, you will obey my commands.” To love Jesus we must obey him, and to obey him we must know what He is asking us to do. So loving Him also requires knowing His Word. Please don’t take His Word lightly. Please don’t count on Sunday morning sermons to be enough spiritual food to get you by. Please in our world of so much untruth, make time, take the time to invest yourself in God’s Truth.

I pray for our children of all ages and stages of life as they return to school this fall. I pray that God will bless them, their teachers, their learning, their relationships, their study. I pray for them because I know that God is using their whole academic experience to shape them, prepare them, and equip them for life. The same is true with Jesus in His school. Romans 8:28 says that “God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” Ephesians

2:10 says that “We are God’s workmanship, His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Every day, God is working in us in order to work through us. Every day, God is shaping and making and molding us into His image for His purpose. Every day, God desires to teach us, lead us, love us, heal us in such a way that we are equipped and empowered first to simply belong to Him but second to effectively make a difference in this world for Him. All of us have a purpose! All of us are called to be in ministry! What is God equipping you for in 2015-16? How

does God want to use you today?

One of the things I’ve found myself saying to my kids about school is: “You get out of it what you put into it.” Jesus said this about his school of life: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.” (Mark 8:34-35)

Praying we all have a great school year with Jesus!

SERVANTS WANTED!For the past two years, St. Luke’s has been sending food

each weekend to 90 students at Cooper Independent School District who have financial challenges at home. This ministry was envisioned and created by Sarah Harlan and Allison Mosier from the Southwest Campus and named “Hands of Jesus.” It is time to pass the mantle of leadership for this ministry and new servants step up and be the “Hands of Jesus” for these children beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. There are several opportunities to serve as the hands of Jesus in this ministry:

• A relationship needs to be established with the counselor at the 4 Cooper Elementary schools.

• Once a month food needs to be ordered from Sam’s, picked up and stored at the SW Campus.

• Once a month the food needs to be packed in sacks and stored at the SW Campus.• Every week the sacks need to be delivered to the 4 Cooper Elementary schools.

This ministry does not need one person serving in every position, but really needs multiple people to take an opportunity for leadership.

• A person can be the liaison to the counselors to find out how many children are in need. • 2 or 3 people can order and pick up the food from Sam’s • 2 or 3 people can organize the monthly packing party at the SW campus (see picture)• 2 or 3 people can deliver the sacks to the 4 Cooper Elementary schools.The blessing of serving in this ministry is that Alison and Sarah have laid a prayer-filled

foundation that is streamlined and financially sound. The 2015-2016 school year is already funded through private donations. The schools know St. Luke’s and relationships are established. St. Luke’s volunteers already know about the packing parties and look forward to getting together and serve. We want to continue this ministry at St. Luke’s, but need some servants to step up and take leadership beginning in mid-August 2015 and serve through the end of May, 2016.

Please prayerfully consider how the Holy Spirit is calling you to be the hands of Jesus to 90 children that not only need food on the weekends, but more importantly need to know that Jesus Christ cares enough about them, to have a person they will never know, to give them a little sack of food.

A note from Pastor MattFor the past few years, and especially the past few months, I have listened to more and more

people comment on the declining influence of Jesus Christ and the Christian church in our country. With the Supreme Court Decision and the White House colored like a rainbow, one cannot help but feel like we are screaming in opposition to God himself. With the constant, violent attacks around the world by people who oppose Christianity many cannot help but feel threatened for their faith in Christ Jesus. With shifting social norms and anti-Christian regimes knocking on the door of the church, maybe we are becoming less of an influence and a minority in the human demography.

However, this is not the first time Christians have experienced such exile. In Jeremiah chapter 29, he wrote to the Israelites that were in Babylonian exile. Jeremiah instructed the captives to live as abundantly as possible in the midst of their captivity. He did not tell them to run scared and become isolated hermits who did not carry on the work of the Lord. He did tell them to hope and pray for better days when the people of God would again be influential in the world. That day did come, but it was 7 decades later!

So how do we live in a culture that is increasingly devaluing the influence of the Christian church? At St. Luke’s, we continue to do what we do best: 1) Reach people for Jesus Christ;2) Grow our personal relationships and building community with each other with Christ as our focus;3) Send ourselves and others out into the community to show the love of Christ, which in turn helps

us begin to reach and grow once again.

Jeremiah told the people to pray for the community where they were held captive even though they disagreed with the rules and law of were they lived. He wanted them to pray for the church that was not so powerful anymore. He wanted them to learn to rely on God more than ever before.

Today, more than ever, we need the power of God who saved us through his love in Jesus Christ. The power of the Kingdom of God does not need us to defend it. What the Kingdom of God needs for us to do is to reveal it to our community through the love and salvation of Jesus Christ by our Prayer, Presence, Gifts, Service and our Witness.

Never forget the promises of God in Christ Jesus even while we live in exile. Never forget that we are the messengers of those promises.

Music MinistryThe fall season has just

arrived and that means many church ministries are resuming. The music ministry has several music ensembles and service teams that are a great place to serve. Here is a brief description of each:

• Adult Choir- sings weekly during worship/ need to be able to carry a tune/ rehearse Wednesdays

• Orchestra- plays monthly during worship/ need to read music & have instrument/ rehearse Wednesdays

• Bellchoir- plays about 3 times a semester/ need to read music/ rehearse Monday evenings

• Praise Band- plays weekly during 10:45 service/ sing or play an instrument/ rehearse Saturday mornings

• Sound Crew- run the sound board once a month/ we will train you

• Media Crew- run the slides during worship once a month/ we will train you

• Librarian- assist with organizing music and documents in the music ministry/ flexible schedule

Don’t miss the opportunity to use a gift that God has given you. God has equipped every believer with some gift, and it blesses God, the church and each believer when these gifts are used. If you are not sure what your gifts are, speak with a pastor or church leader. But, sometimes we hear directly from those we encounter daily. For example, if people hear you sing and enjoy your voice, that would be a great sign that you

should consider investing your voice in choir. If people enjoy the way you play an instrument, perhaps the orchestra is for you. The main point is, God gave us abilities for a reason. If you have “mothballed” your talent, consider dusting if off and investing it in one of the areas above, or in other areas of the church. Don’t miss out on what God has in store for you through exercising your gift in church.

Now, for a quick report on Summer Music Camp. First, many thanks to those who served during Summer Music Camp. Many dedicated people of all ages generously gave their time. We had our highest number of youth workers, and these youth were “graduates” of music camp. What a blessing they gave to the campers! Second, the entire week went smoothly, the performance was wonderful, and all of the specially designed props were incredibly effective illustrations. The cannon that fired smoke rings was a big hit and was a metaphor for the explosive truth of the Bible. The oversized set of weights illustrated the weight of historical documents that support the integrity of the Bible. And, the magic trick illustrated the reality and veracity of properly basic beliefs. What’s that? Look it up on the internet. You’ll find it to be very interesting. Finally, I felt that the music campers and the audience were exposed to great information that will increase their confidence in the Bible. At the end of the musical,

Pastor Andy encouraged everyone to run home to open the scriptures. Let’s all heed his counsel!

Our 8th annual Block Party will be on Wednesday, August 26th. This should be a big turning point for our outreach to the community, as our neighbors may realize that this is not a fleeting gesture of hospitality. The music ministry will invite children from Music Camp to perform several numbers from the musical. This will bring families from our community and from all around Lubbock. Let’s prepare our hearts and minds for this event and be intentional to welcome people into our church by engaging in warm conversation. The natural temptation is to huddle up in our normal groups. Let’s all step out in faith and help our church grow.

Finally, we’ll continue to study the nature of worship next month. We finished the spring with the provocative question, “If God designed a worship service, what would it look like?” I challenge you to meditate on this question for one more month and we’ll begin to explore the answer in October. However, don’t let this stop you from investigating this question on your own. Any effort we make to get to know God better is time well spent.

This was an INCREDIBLE summer for the Ragamuffin Student Ministry! With camps, lock ins, mission trips, go karts and more, dozens of our students have encountered Christ, experienced community, and had a lot of fun. I want to tell you about the coolest part. This summer trekked through an 8-week Bible Study called CHOSEN: Discovering Our Call to Discipleship, where we went through the Gospels chronologically dissecting things the disciples went through as they walked with the Christ. Whether responding to Jesus’ invitation to “Come,” or answering His question, “but who do YOU say I am,” this study has challenged, encouraged, and empowered our students and leaders alike to walk in the grace & power of the Holy Spirit, as we learn to trust and obey Him in the little things. I encourage you to ask a student what they learned, and I guarantee you they can teach you a thing or too as well!

Thanks for a great summer, Ragamuffins, now let’s make it an incredible fall!!!

PROGRESS:

In the last 3 months we have created new places to connect with people. They are Spanish classes and Soccer camp. Both make us more visible for the English speaking and Hispanic community, which was our new target for this summer. We are figuring out the strategy to make these new relationships and move to a level of trust with these groups. That is the first step in building our new church. Our ESL class is starting with a devotional time and prayer for specific needs, and God has shown His hand in several families. The teachers are playing a wonderful role in this. Now, three of these families are regularly attending our services.

Our services, events and personal visits to people at home or in the hospital provided us the opportunity to show how God works in our own lives, adding faith, hope, and love as spiritual signs of His presence in us. These visible things encouraged families to make more of a commitment to God and to others.

Media will be our tool to encourage and challenge people to know each other better. It also has been a resource for some people to meet us and even visit our services. Thanks St. Luke’s UMC, our church, who helped us to pay the tuition for a couple who are enrolled at the Christian Academy. They may be future leaders in our new church. August is the seventh month of Vida Abundante. It is attended regularly by 9 families and sporadically by 5 more people.

The growing challenges for next fall demand that we ask God for new responses: review and reorganize the little communities we have created until now, prepare people for teaching children, youth, and helping in our services, and organize a small group of leaders who will support and address our mission.

One thing is sure, His companionship never fails! We are receiving God’s plan for us while we walk one day at the time! -Jorge

The aspect that touched me the most personally about Missionary Conference 2015 was the testimonies from our congregation and from the keynote speakers about how the LORD is doing an incredible work throughout the nations: Randy Galloway seeing the LORD arrange minute details of his life and ministry in order to lead them into otherwise impossible opportunities, Marvin Whitt and his family getting to see how the LORD is raising up the young people in the Philippines for His purposes in world missions, Janet Hunt watching her congregation catch fire for missions on every level from local to global, and members of our St. Luke’s family being deeply moved and impacted by the work in Belize, Juarez, and Israel this Summer.

Truly, salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb! The LORD is moving in most incredible ways throughout the world today and I wanted to share one testimony from Missionary Conference has happened in the hours since it ended. We received a small update from White Harvest Ministries in Nazareth who provided the prayer requests for the Israel prayer board in our prayer stations for the conference. One of their prayer requests was for a Muslim family with 12 children that they were reaching out to. Well, in this update we received Monday morning, it talked about how the husband received healing in the name of Jesus and the parents very intentionally gathered all of their kids together to hear the Bible stories that the missionary was sharing. What an amazing breakthrough!

Thank you to everyone who prayed for this ministry this weekend. The LORD definitely answered our prayers and I believe that as we continue to seek His will to be done, we will see Him do it again and again!

Missions & OutreachMissionary Conference 2015 - Dreamers

We are thankful for your efforts in being apart of the Great Commission and for seeing the value in loving people well, specifically international students. We want to welcome you to be part of The Cultural Exchange. The purpose of the CulEx is to show hospitality to international students by inviting them into your lives as a community, individually, or as a family as an overflow of what Jesus has accomplished for us.

Our goal is for you to help the international students adjust to life here in Lubbock. Being available to them for help means the world to them. However, our only expectation of you is that you host them once a month in your home. Over 80% of international students in America never enter an Americans home. We want to change that. Therefore, once a month, have them over to your home, feed them, take them to experience truly American things, and be their family away from home.

Deadline for sign ups is September 15. A mandatory orientation will be held September 20 at 2:30 pm at Redeemer Church.

Financial Update

KiDs Beach Club is an innovative ministry established to mobilize the church to go outside our walls to do a Beach Club in order to take the message of Christ into the heart of our community.

Beach Club is high energy and filled with fun “kid centered” clubs that meet after school for one hour one day a week for 24 weeks. Beach Club incorporate the truth of scripture every time we meet and gives us the opportunity to introduce Christ to kids.

Our Maedgen Beach Club meets Thursday afternoons from 3-4:30pm beginning September 17th.

We need volunteers!• Club leader- Organizes volunteers and materials for each week

• Surf Team Leaders-help lead kids in activities and build lasting relationships

• Record Keeper- enter each child’s information into record system, enter attendance weekly

Did you know that simply signing in at church assures you will be prayed for? Our MPG (Monday Prayer Group) team prays for everyone who registers their attendance on Sunday, as well as any prayer requests. Also, joining MPG is a good way to

stay efficient in your prayer life, so come join us every Monday at Central at 8:30 am or at Southwest at 9am for about an hour. It’s the perfect way to start your week. See Debbie Birchfield, Cindy Ferguson, Becky Page, Tim or Susan Ebelthite for more info, or call the church office.

MPG is also trying to gather names of all friends and family of St. Luke’s members that are serving in the military, so we can keep them lifted in prayer. Please e-mail Debbie Birchfield at [email protected] with names and ANY prayer requests for the MPG group.

Let Us Pray!One of the most important

ways to serve our Lord and our church is to pray. And we have several opportunities now at St. Luke’s.

Every Sunday, a person prays for all prayer requests and each person by name at each service at the Central campus. Usually in the office or Prayer Room, we can pray quietly, as we lift up the requests and the names.

If you would like to serve in this way, please call Cindy Ferguson at 795-5937.

Also our Monday Morning Prayer Group is open to anyone! We meet at 8:30 each Monday in the Prayer Room (6), and would welcome You!

Dear St. Luke’s VBS, I cannot thank you all enough for the “snack packs” you made

for my volunteers! The guys were so happy to see the colorful sacks, sweet notes and yummy treats. They love volunteering and “loving their neighbor” just as Jesus taught us to do. For them to get a special treat really meant a lot to them. Many days they work through lunch to get the job done, and these snack packs are perfect for them to take with them on a workday. They gave them a delicious break to get through the day.
