Moving Forward: This past Tuesday evening the new Finance Council and Pastoral Council of Holy Spirit Parish met for the first time. I am very pleased to intro-duce them to you. Serving on the Pastoral Council are Marla Brown, Amy Chornenky, Phyllis Genareo , Joe Ginocchi, Susan Kearns, Tom Leihy, Tom McCosby, Matthew McCosby, Harry Micco, Joe Pascarella, John Provencher, and John Stephens. Serving on the Finance Council are Brad J. Cain, David Gettings, Vincent Fuleno, George Liskooka, Debbie Lynch, Reed Newell, Jerry Prestopine, Jodi Russo, and Tracey Vasko.

We have many weighty concerns, but are encouraged by the exciting things that are happening in our parish. Working together and “keeping the main thing, the main thing” will ensure a bright future for the Church in Lawrence County.

One of the major concerns that we have is to get control of our finances. In an attempt to reduce expenses, we have to consolidate our parish offices. Beginning on September 23, there will no longer be a parish office at Christ the King or St. Camillus. For all parish concerns, please call 724-652-3422 and or check the website, https://hsplc.org/lay-staff, for the email addresses of our staff. Our goal is to serve all of our parishioners as efficiently as possible, but this does require that we make necessary changes. Your patience, cooperation and understanding is deeply appreciated.

The new faith formation schedule has begun. I am personally very grateful to all of our catechists and volunteers who are devoted to our kids and to passing the faith on to the next generation. Thank you also to the parents of our children for their cooperation and participation, particularly in our new faith formation liturgies. The following are the Holy Spirit staff members and their contact information for our entire Faith Formation/Youth Ministry Program.

From the Desk of Deacon John:

Being a homeowner often requires regular preventive maintenance to your property. The weather last weekend was so nice that it gave me an opportunity to catch up on some maintenance items around my own home, such as cleaning out the clogged gutters! Sometimes items come up needing repairs when you least expect it, or are prepared to deal with them; such as having to replace a major appliance, unexpected car repairs etc.

Recently, we needed to test the boiler out at St. Vitus School for the upcom-ing winter season. During our testing, we found it has multiple leaks. Based on the age and issues with the boiler, it has been recommended we replace the system. We are currently obtaining estimates for having it repaired, and for what the cost of replacement would be. We need to determine the best way to resolve the issues at hand.

Another item needing attention is the flat roof area of St. Anthony Church in Bessemer. We have been experiencing leaks in the flat roof section. Even after patching, water still is finding its way into the sacristy, cry room and Our Lady’s Chapel in the back of the church. Current estimate to replace these roofs came in at $30,000.00. We also have leaks in the roof of the rectory at St. Camillus, which is also a flat roof. This roof is about 3 years old; thus, we are filing a claim with the warranty company to repair it. Flat roofs in this part of the country always seem to have maintenance issues. We recently discovered a leak in the roof at St. Lawrence hall in Hillsville. We are presently working on repairs to that roof as well.

You may have noticed the scaffolding located in the choir loft of St. Mary’s Church. Earlier in the summer, we had a leak in the roof that caused damage

to the plaster. In order to make the repairs, we had to remove part of the pipes for the organ. The plaster repair work has been completed; however, we now must wait for it to thoroughly dry before paint can be applied. Once the painting is completed, the pipes will be placed back for the organ and the scaffolding will be taken down. We hope this project will be completed in late October. Fortunately, this repair work was covered by insurance.

We have a lot of buildings. If you count them all, including those connected and those that stand separately, the total is 29! So, chances are we will constantly have unanticipated expenses to deal with. Presently, most of the repairs I have mentioned are not budgeted for. Thus, we may need to take from our savings in order to do the repairs. At this rate, it won’t take long to drain our reserves. We will keep you updated on the status of repairs.

EVANGELIZATION & MUSIC

Prayer before evangelizing

All of the good works we do must begin with prayer, especially when it comes to evangelizing. Here is a prayer from Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) to help us focus on God’s mission.

Lord, when you called Abraham, he responded, “Ready” When you called Isaiah, he answered, “Here I am Lord.”

When the angel Gabriel called out to Mary, she responded, “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.”

Lord, I hear you calling my name. I hear you entrusting me with the task of building your kingdom.

Like those holy men and women who have gone before me, I give you my ‘yes’! I will go anywhere you want me to go. I will do anything you want me to do.

I will say anything you want me to say. Holy Spirit I welcome you and ask you to guide me.

Form in me an apostle’s heart filled with love for Christ and zeal for souls. I will commit myself with courage and generosity to the New Evangelization.

I will build brick-by-brick, the city of God inside the city of man. Amen

(CCO is a university student movement dedicated to evangelization. They challenge students to live

in the fullness of the Catholic faith with a strong emphasis on becoming leaders in the renewal of

the world. To learn more about Catholic Christian Outreach, go online to cco.ca.)

Cantor Workshop in October There will be a cantor workshop Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at St. James the Apostle worship site of Holy Spirit Parish.

This workshop is sponsored by the Pittsburgh chap-ter of NPM (National Association of Pastoral Musi-

cians). Mr. David Dreher of St. Kilian and Holy Sepulcher parish-es will be the presenter along with Kevin Maurer, who will be the accompanist.

Cantors should prepare 2 respon-sorial psalms to sing. Many of our

cantors from Holy Spirit Parish will be attending.

Have YOU thought about being a cantor? If you love God and the church and you love to sing and have a pleasing voice, we need you!

How about some of you young people? If you can sing solos with your high school choir and get on a stage to play a part in the school musical, then you’ve already conquered stage fright. If you need help choosing and rehearsing a responsorial psalm, that can be arranged! There are materials that need to be ordered for those attending, so if you are inter-ested, please contact Brenda Kostial at [email protected] as soon as possible!

“The Catholic Truth

about Angels, Demons,

Ghosts and Hauntings”

Please join us for a fascinating

talk on what the Church really teaches about angels,

demons, ghosts, exorcisms, and hauntings at 7:00 to

8:55 pm on Thursday, September 26, in the church

at the St. Camillus site.

In this presentation, Dave Van Vickle will draw

from his extensive experience assisting priests in

their ministries of exorcism and deliverance, and,

from his study of Church teaching. Dave clears up

the many misunder-

standings surrounding

this area. During this

thorough and dynamic

presentation on the

world of evil, he reveals

the unfathomable

power of the mercy of

God flowing through his priests.

After the talk there will be time for questions. You

will not want to miss this!

considering that option and learning more about the faith. We meet

on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm in the Marian Room on the lower

level of Mary, Mother of Hope worship site, 124 N. Beaver Street.

This Thursday, we are going to discuss Our Journey with God:

God’s Call to Us and Our Response of Faith. We will explore how

where God may be leading us in the future. For more information,

VOLUNTEER NURSES WANTED

If you are a retired nurse or working part-time and could donate some time and service

to the children of St.Vitus School of Holy Spirit Parish, we need your help. If you would give just a couple

hours a week, it would be a huge benefit to the school.

We just need someone to tend to minor scrapes and

bruises, to give a child a place to lie down

when they are not feeling well,

and call their home to communicate with parents.

Our services from the public school are not

adequate to meet the needs of our children.
