ST. BERNADETTE

9343 S. Francisco ● Evergreen Park, IL 60805 2

Last week, our staff said goodbye to Kim Osowiec, our Business Manager. I want to thank her for her seven years of service at St. Bernadette. She has helped keep this parish on strong financial footing, especially during the pandemic. I am also pleased to announce that Ellie Joyce has agreed to take over most of Kim’s responsibilities, in addition to her own, and will now serve at the parish’s Office Manager. I know that Ellie, along with the parish finance council, will be good stewards in managing the parish’s resources, especially as we continue to reopen after COVID-19. With the new school year underway, we are preparing to begin another year of Religious Education. However, in order to give families more time to adjust to the return to school, we are delaying the beginning of Religious Education until October. We plan to resume classes with mostly online learning, but occasional in-person classes. In order to assist our catechists, we’ll be using a new catechetical program, Christ in Us, specifically designed to be used in a hybrid learning model. We are still planning on holding our Confirmation here at St. Bernadette in November and expect to celebrate our First Communion as we normally do in May. If you have any questions about the upcoming Religious Education school year, please contact Anita O’Donnell via e - m a i l a t a o d o n n e l l @ stbernadettechurch.org. I also want to say a few things about our Queen of Hearts raffle. You may have heard that the Red Palm is closed, and so we need a new venue for the drawings. We are looking into some locations; I would like to keep the drawing in Evergreen Park. However, nothing has been decided and I continue to discuss options with our Queen of

Hearts volunteers and the parish councils. I hope to have this resolved soon so the raffle can resume next month. For now, the money we raised (our pot) is at $11,230 and is sitting in a bank account, untouched since we suspended the drawings back in March. The full pot will be there when we resume, and we will use the same board rather than beginning again with a new one. Finally, I want to congratulate Connie Stalteri, our RCIA candidate, on coming into full communion with the Catholic Church. Connie began RCIA a year ago and attended the Rite of Election last March, but because of the pandemic was unable to fully enter the Church at the Easter Vigil. It was my privilege to celebrate the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion with her last week and fully welcome her into the Church. Please join me in welcoming our newest Catholic and newest St. Bernadette parishioners. Congratulations Connie! Peace, Fr. Benedykt

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Connie Stalteri, the newest member of St. Bernadette Parish

“You missed the point,” we might be tempted to shout at the servant in today’s Gospel. His master had just forgiven a huge debt when he cried for mercy, and yet, when given the opportunity to show mercy himself, he instead acted violently and with retribution toward a fellow servant. Certainly, he had missed the point of his master’s merciful actions toward him, and suffered the consequences as a result. He missed the point. He is not alone, however. We all “miss the point” sometimes—we miss the point of God’s enduring covenant of love, and miss the mark in our call to live as though we are the Lord’s, for this is who we are. Becoming More Like Christ When Peter asked Jesus how many times he must forgive, he was probably stunned at Jesus’ response. Peter had asked, “As many as seven times?” Seven being the perfect number, surely this is enough forgiveness, Peter likely thought. Jesus’ response seems lavish beyond proportion. “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” Jesus understands the fullness of God’s mercy and teaches that disciples are called to this same lavish outpouring of mercy. God showers compassion on humanity, beyond what might seem sensible or wise, yet we are called to “remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults,” to give others the benefit of the doubt, knowing that God does this and more with us, each and every day. As recipients of God’s compassion, we must extend forgiveness and care beyond what might seem reasonable, because God’s love is beyond human reason.

How Much is Too Much? All this might seem just too much for us. It is one thing to recognize God’s enduring covenant love. It is another to grasp that we are called to the same sort of lavishness in mercy and forgiveness ourselves. Saint Paul helps us put this in perspective. We no longer live for ourselves, but for the Lord. In life and death, we belong to God and are called to be witnesses to God’s love, even in the most challenging circumstances. A friend turns away from us; we are called to turn toward the friend with mercy. A co-worker hurts us; we are called to approach him or her with forgiveness, seventy-seven times no less! God’s love is always about what is just and right. As God’s people, we live and die for the Lord, forgive even when it doesn’t make sense to do so, and leave the rest in God’s hands. Spiritual Communion

While the church gradually reopens, we are nonetheless painfully aware that not everyone is able to join us yet. Being cut off from the sacramental life of the church, especially the Eucharist, creates a great hardship for the Church and Her people. We remind everyone unable to join us in person, but participating spiritually, to do the best they can to practice spiritual communion and to use this prayer in the absence of the Eucharist: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

The Stewardship Prayer

My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am.

Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray.

It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the

things that I want my parish to be. Amen.
