In Spite of…Ministries Going to jail, even county jail, is
a very traumatic experience for
anyone. Besides being
immediately separated from one’s
children and family, one has to live
in very close quarters with total
strangers, eat institutional food,
sleep on one inch-thick mattresses with no pillow, and wear very
unattractive prison garb called jumpsuits. But then, jail isn’t supposed to
be fun, right? Right. And guess who also knows this and uses it to his
advantage? The devil himself. He is very clever and loves to further
meddle in a prisoner’s life by capitalizing on her shame and sorrow and
loneliness and fear, all feelings that almost all inmates experience. He is
anxious to beat up on many of the inmates who already are beaten down
and have no hope. That’s why our ministry is there. We can bring hope
and peace, yes, and even joy into the lives of these inmates, and it’s all
because of the love of Christ! We have seen lives transformed almost
before our eyes sometimes, when a prisoner finally “gets it,” that God gave
up His only Son so He wouldn’t have to give up on us! It’s that compelling
message that brings us back to jail every week. Whether passing out
library books, or giving them a Bible to keep, or praying with them, or
telling them about Jesus, it’s really all about the same thing.

Today is the annual celebration of our elder saints here at Reedy Branch. Senior saints are not counted as those who used to serve, but to the glory of God – senior saints continue to serve. Joshua 14:10-12 records the words of Caleb, who is an 85 year old example of continued service in one’s older years: “10And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. 11As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. 12Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be
able to drive them out, as the LORD said."
Caleb had every excuse to retire. However, is there any true retirement from serving the Lord? In Psalm 71:18, the believing writer lifts a request as well as a responsibility. “Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this
generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.”
As a church family, we have gleaned from the wisdom of our Senior Saints and admire the example that they have set. We have been strengthened by their testimonies which have been seasoned over time through hard trials and tribulations. It is our prayer for everyone that has lived to be labeled as a “Senior Saint,” that you continue to demonstrate
the Lord’s strength and power to the world.
Your fellow saints salute you on this, your special day!
Our evening services will be cancelled today due to our Senior Saints celebration. We will resume our regular schedule next Sunday, August 13.
