Independence Golf Club
Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2001, Inde-
pendence underwent a full renovation in 2014, led by
architect Lester George. Independence features both
an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole short
course. After a seven-year run at Ballyhack Golf Club,
the State Open of Virginia will return to Independ-
ence in 2021. The club hosted the championship from
2007-2013. The Senior Open will also be played at IGC in 2021. The Senior
Open of Virginia is presented by Custom Golf of Virginia.

2020 OMEGA MAPGA Senior Player Rankings
15th Senior Open of Virginia » vsga.org, mapga.com
To date, only one player has ever won the VSGA Senior Amateur and Senior Open
of Virginia in the same year: David Partridge, who accomplished the feat in 2011.
Tazewell’s Buck Brittain will look to join Partridge on that list at Independence.
Brittain is the only player to have ever won back-to-back Senior Open titles, doing
so at Two Rivers Country Club in Williamsburg in 2017 and 2018. Brittain capped a
strong week at Westwood Country Club in August by defeating Bowen Sargent 2
and 1 in the title match of the 73rd VSGA Senior Amateur Championship. Brittain is
also a past winner of the VSGA Mid-Amateur. All of his titles have come since he
turned 50. A member of at The Virginian Golf Club, Brittain also reached the final
of the 2012 VSGA Amateur at Bayville Golf Club.
Buck’s quest
PGA Life Member Dick Mast of Forest secured his first MAPGA Senior Profes-
sional Championship on Sept. 1 at The Piedmont Club in Haymarket, finishing a
stroke clear of David Hutsell thanks to a 70-foot two-putt on the final hole.
Mast, a past PGA Tour Champions player, shot 68-66 for a two-day 134 and
was one of several from that championship who will participate in the 2020
Senior PGA Professional Championship in Florida in October. Mast and Hutsell
were already exempt. Carey Hodsden, Jim Estes, Sean English, Dirk Schultz,
Brendan McGrath and Tim Lewis all qualified through the MAPGA PFC.
Mast sails to victory
In 2010, Keith Decker (pictured) defeated Vinny Giles in a playoff at the Coun-
try Club of Virginia’s James River Course to claim the Senior Open of Virginia
title. Ten years later, Decker and Giles will vie again for a title as both are in the
field for this year’s event at Independence. Giles remains the only player to win
a U.S. Amateur, U.S. Senior Amateur and British Amateur championships. Joining
them is another Virginia legend: Bobby Wadkins, who has 11 professional victo-
ries to his credit, including four on the PGA Tour Champions. Wadkins has a pair
of top-10 finishes in majors, tying for fourth in the 1987 U.S. Open and tying for
seventh at the 1987 PGA Championship. All three are members of the Virginia
Golf Hall of Fame, and another player, David Partridge, will join them there in
2021 when the 2020 Virginia Golf Hall of Fame Class is belatedly inducted.
