ALKI PTA• Ali Pankop, a new kinder parent, was itching to find her PTA niche last

year and when the PTA Secretary role opened up she knew she had found it. She has been serving as interim Secretary this summer and is ready to be voted in at our first meeting of the year. We are super stoked to have a new parent perspective. Ali also manages our Box Tops fundraiser this year!

The PTA Board will be working with Co-Staff Liaisons: Laurie Iba and Laurie Rasmussen as well as with Principal Deese to learn how to best serve our school throughout the year.

I, myself, am happy to be embarking on my 3rd year as a PTA Executive Officer and my 2nd (and final) year as PTA President. To that end, this year more than ever before, we want to continue to lay a solid foundation of resources, communication and support to set our future PTA leaders up for success and continue to strengthen our community. We aim to dispel common PTA myths, especially the idea of US and THEM. We believe strongly that every voice in our community matters and that ALL decisions are stronger if we make them together. Being an active member of PTA is about helping decisions get made that impact ALL of our students. Everyone is invited to help make Alki the best it can be for our students. If you are interested in shadowing a current Board Member this year we want to hear from you!

We look forward to seeing you all at our annual PTA Back to School BBQ Thursday the 14th followed by our first PTA meeting of the year (free childcare!) Please find in this week’s Kid Mail our PTA Membership Form (or sign up online at PT-Avenue.com/join), Volunteer Interest Survey and our annual Sounders FC Alki Day ticket order form. We’ve included a handy envelope you can return forms and checks in to the Alki PTA Mailbox (located around the corner from the Main Office) OR send in with your student and teachers will get it to us – thank you, teachers!

Next week look for our brand new Alki PTA Handbook! All our event lists and calendars, budget info and PTA processes, auction info, fundraisers and event descriptions and MORE in one handy booklet for your reference throughout the year! Super exciting! As always you can visit alkipta.com for up to date information as well.

Thank you for all you do, Alki. Looking forward to a great year together!

Best, Amy Cooper Alki PTA President

LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL DEESE Aloha Alki Elementary Community,

Welcome back to another great school year! We’ve got some amazing new things planned for the year like special guest assemblies, Family Fitness Night, and much more! You will

also see our usual beloved school events like Alki Adventures and Curriculum Night! This 2017-2018 school year will be our best yet!

As much excitement as there is for an amazing school year ahead, all our thoughts and love reach out to those impacted by the events in Texas and Florida. When hurricane Iniki hit our island of Kauai in 2011, our entire island was devastated. Schools were leveled and needed to be completely rebuilt, we ate MREs delivered every day by the Army, and we lived with no electricity for 3 months. This kind of devastation brought our community together to support one another, a whole community working as one. As we desperately want to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey & Irma, we will be organizing donation efforts to send to those in need on behalf of our Alki Elementary Community. More information to come!

Our school’s motto for the year is “I to Us, Me to We, Mine to Ours.” As Alki staff returned to school in August, we worked together to develop this focus for the 2017-2018 school year. It is our goal to become an even more cohesive community, working together to create the best possible outcomes for our students. We hope that you continue to partner with us in this journey. Consider volunteering in our school, or sharing your feedback at Principal Coffee Chats, or becoming an Alki SUPERHERO (adult mentor for students in need)!

We are Alki Elementary and we are AWESOME! Here’s to an amazing year ahead!

With love, Rena Deese Alki Elementary Principal

INTRODUCTION TO OUR LEGISLATIVE CORNER Hello! My name is Vanessa Longacre-Wilcox, and I am the Alki PTA Legislative Chair for 2017-2018, welcome to a new year!

Each month my goal with this article will be to research and share what is going on around legislative issues that impact schools and kids. In this section, you’ll find details on upcoming events, ways to connect and be heard, and information relating to the school or education as a whole. Whether you are a policy buff or new to the issues, I hope you’ll find the information here relevant, actionable, and easy to understand.

Students across Seattle are counting on us. Let’s work together to stay informed and advocate on behalf of kids, schools, and all communities. Together we can make a difference!

If there is something you are curious about, something you feel strongly should be covered here, or a correction that needs to be made, please let me know. [email protected]

ROBOTICS CLUB IS BACK! Tuesdays and Thursdays (7:20AM-7:50 AM) Sept. 19 - Feb. 27

Students will work in teams to complete specific missions. Teams will learn to code using Blocky and Dash and Dot robots to solve each mission. It is very important that students come with the understanding that they need to work well with others for their team to be successful.

3rd, 4th and 5th graders, Mrs. Iba with the help of Jennifer Ogle. If you are a parent who would like to help please contact Mrs. Iba, [email protected].

Please understand that adults CANNOT help teams solve the missions. Adults CAN and WILL help students with their communication and cooperative skills.

There are a limited number of spots available due to the limited number of robots we have. If you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader who is willing to come to school EARLY on Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of February please have them see Mrs. Iba in the library for a registration form.

PTSA REFLECTIONS PROGRAM RETURNS TO ALKI THIS YEAR We are excited to announce that Alki Elementary PTA will be participating in Reflections, the National and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition! The theme for this year's contest is "Within Reach" Reflections encourages students of all grades and abilities to explore their inner artist, thus allowing them to submit within more than one category. The six areas of arts expression are: visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, dance composition and film production. The grade divisions are K-2 and 3-5. There is also a Special Artist division that offers modified rules and guidelines to ensure that every student has a chance to participate. This is an option for students who receive services under IDEA or Section 504. Every student is recognized for their accomplishments in the program, and finalists are able to not only participate in the Seattle Council PTSA exhibit at the Seattle Center (over Winter Break), they also have opportunities for state and national recognition. Stay tuned for more information on this program coming very soon! For questions or to volunteer to help, please contact Lindsay Yost at [email protected].

The Alki Elementary PTA strives to limit the amount of fundraising that we ask of our families and community. We hear year after year that many of our families prefer not to do some of the more traditional type of fundraisers. So, again this year, we will not do catalog sales or fundraisers that require you to go door-to-door or sell at your workplace.

Participation in these programs is extremely important to our school. These programs help raise the funds for our PTA to be able to sponsor worthwhile programs for the entire school such as Playground and Cafeteria Supervisors, Camp Burton, Writers In The Schools, the Musical, technology such as iPads, Emergency Preparedness Kits, our part-time Counselor, salmon tank in the hallway, art supplies, healthroom and office support, and so much more. We truly appreciate your support and dedication! We could not do all of these amazing programs, fundraisers, and fun activities without parent involvement.

So if you are interested in getting more involved or have suggestions, please VP Fundraising: Rebecca Ripley Kent ([email protected]). Here’s to a great 2017-18

FUNDRAISING WE HAVE TWO MAIN FUNDRAISING PROGRAMS ALKI AUCTION The Alki PTA hosts our largest and most exciting fundraising effort, the Alki PTA Auction & sit-down dinner. This year’s theme is “Alki Derby” and is being held Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Hall at Fauntleroy. For information: TinyURL.com/AlkiAuction2017

ALKI-A-THON In the spring, we strap on our shoes and head outside to promote healthy habits and earn funds pledged by friends and family based on the number of laps completed in our Alki-A-Thon. This fundraiser is a fun and exciting event for students and families. Our Alki-A-Thon is being held in the spring, Friday, June 1, 2018.

ALKI ELEMENTARY NIGHT OUT WITH THE SOUNDERS FC (Sunday, Oct. 22) - Century Link Field Purchase tickets for your entire family for an evening of fun and excitement as we cheer on our team.

ALKI DONATION DRIVE This spring, help recycle unwanted merchandise and reduce landfill space by donating your used clothing, shoes, toys, household items and books. A fun and easy way to get involved and help raise money for our school and local community.

ALKI DINES OUT Yet another fun way to bring our community together while supporting our children. One night a month starting in January, a restaurant in West Seattle supports Alki Elementary by donating a percentage of the nights’ proceeds back to our PTA. Bring your family, invite your friends and don't miss this tasty way to support the Alki Elementary PTA. Keep a look out for future dates to be announced.

DIRECT GIVE Alkipta.com now has a quick and easy PayPal Donation Button so anyone at any time can contribute any dollar amount they wish safely and easily! Grandparents, family members, aunts and uncles from far and wide can support our students with the click of a button!

BOX TOPS Box Tops is a great way for kids and even friends and family all over the country to participate and help raise funds for Alki Elementary. To help, you can collect "Box Tops" which are clipped off of a ton of household items you purchase every week or visit www.boxtops4education.com. This program helps our teachers receive educational items for their classroom, and then receive 2% of the purchases back as cash for the school.

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM New this year! Alki has created 3 sponsorship levels for businesses or families to support our main events throughout the year! Be a Platinum, Gold or Silver sponsor and see your business recognized at the Fall Auction, Winter Musical and Spring Alki-a-Thon! Varying other levels may include one or more events – there’s something for everyone! Check out the Sponsorship Packages in the PTA handbook. Thank you for your consideration!

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR WANTED There are so many ways to volunteer with Alki PTA and it is incredibly helpful to have a point person that is in the know about Volunteer requirements, PTA events and opportunities.

We are in need of multiple roles to be filled this year but we want to put a spotlight on finding a Volunteer Coordinator for 2017/18. This person (or people) would have great communication and organizational skills and help match volunteers with jobs that fit their availability and skill set. You would meet a wide range of Alki families and be a great asset to the Alki PTA Board and event chairs. If you would be interested in bringing your organizational talents to this role please reach out to [email protected].

ROOM PARENTS WANTED! Looking for a way to volunteer this year but not sure you’re up for helping out with the auction or another event? Consider being your classroom’s Room Parent! PTA Room Parents act as a liaison between the PTA Executive Board, Event and Program Chairs and your child’s classroom roster of families. Room Parent communications are especially helpful when soliciting grade level auction basket donations, teacher appreciation week assistance or sending out last minute reminders for events or volunteer needs! Room Parents may, at the discretion of the teacher, assist with needs in the classroom but this is solely dependent upon the mutual agreement worked out between the Room Parent and the teacher and will vary from class to class. For more information on being a PTA Room Parent please talk to your classroom teacher or reach out to [email protected]. We hope to have PTA Room Parents in all classrooms by Curriculum Night October 19, 2017.
