Elks ER message Sept 2012

At the 11 September membership meeting, we will vote on three items. (1) Approval of a Holley-Navarre Lodge by-law amendment to allow use of shortened rituals at membership meetings, which would greatly reduce the duration of our meetings. (2) a Grand Lodge constitutional amend-ment to eliminate the GL Treasurer whose functions are now being per-formed by the Comptroller. Approval does not affect our own lodge Treasurer, Walter Zilka. (3) Approval of routine end of quarter budget amendments. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

The Presiding Justice has dismissed the subordinate forum concerning Turners vs. Offenborn. The order is posted on our bulletin board. This does not change the Executive Order that Hans received and he remains excluded from Club privileges. It is my hope that this forum dismissal will help us reconcile and proceed with our Elk charitable work.

We now have a nice sign just below the Shrimp Basket sign promoting our Lodge. This may improve our visibility and participation. My heart-felt thanks to Chris and Judy Christensen for their generous donation to have the sign made, to Rusty Leonard for a very professional sign, to Clarke Duarte and Ken Alabiso for their considerable work in coordinat-ing, constructing, and installing the sign, and to the Shrimp Basket for allowing us to place a sign on their property. The membership approved a free ad for the Shrimp Basket in the Log. I would also like to thank Jim Fix for his efforts to get a DOT “green sign” on US 98 to designate an Elks Lodge or to designate the Elks Way street that we reside on.

Clarke Duarte has completed the installation of beer taps connected to kegs stored within the new walk-in-cooler. This will allow more cold kegs, so the Board of Governors has authorized a new “Elks Brew” keg (Natural Lite) at the special everyday price of $1.00 per mug. Thanks to Clarke for all his ideas and work to improve our Club—maybe we should buy him an Elks Brew!

Come out and visit the Lodge. You can’t miss us now that we have a new sign.

Lets pray for

a safe and

joyous

month.

A special thanks too everyone that held an event this month. We can have a lot of fun

and events when our members step up and help. In the next 4 months, we really need

everyone to help. We have the holidays just around the corner. Anyone interested in do-

ing Thanksgiving dinner at the lodge needs to step up so this can be planned. Some

things we need to work on are children’s Christmas Party, angel tree, a Christmas party

for our members, and a New Years Eve party. All of these need to be planned now so we

can start working on them and making them the best ever.

Again thanks to all that help.

Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services Spotlight

By: Diane Corson, Occupational Therapist

Introducing David

I would like to introduce you to David. He is 5 years old and lives with his grandparents. He attends a volun-tary pre-kindergarten program, where the teacher noticed some concerns with his learning and attention. David was having a difficult time listening to the teacher and following directions. He struggled with learning his preschool academics, like colors, shapes, letters and numbers. You can imagine that David was also being a tad bit rowdy and disobedient in the class during circle time and table top activities because the learning tasks were difficult for him.

David began occupational therapy with me in January of this year and has made huge improvements in the last several months. We focused on using his energy during outdoor play times and with appropriate exercises while in the classroom. He also learned to identify if his body was “just right” for learning or if he was “too excited.” He now follows one and two step directions without difficulty. He can name almost all of his upper and lower case letters (46 out of 52 letters) and writes his first and last name independently. He cuts on the line with great accuracy.

David graduated from pre- kindergarten satisfactorily passing the kindergarten readiness test given by his teacher. David has been discharged from therapy. He mastered all of our therapy goals. He can write his first and last name independently. He is able to identify (I say a letter and he finds it) all letters of the alphabet and can name the letters with more than 90% accuracy. His grandmother is so thankful for all the assistance I was able to provide thanks to the Florida Elks Children's Therapy Program.

I hope you have enjoyed getting to know David just a little. Imagine, because of your support to the Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Program, I am able to work with twenty children each week, just as wonderful as David!

I am thankful to work for such an awesome organization. You are helping so many children learn, grow and become successful.
