Introduction

The Aboriginal people are from Australia. Theyhave lived in Australia for at least 40,000years. The Europeans arrived in Australia inthe 1700s. The Europeans called the Aboriginalpeople “Aborigines”.

Aboriginal Clothing

In summer the Aboriginal people wore no clothing oronly short fringes. These short fringes were made of feathers, fiber, string or the tails of small animalsthat were placed over their pr ivate parts. In cold

places and in winter the Aboriginal people worecloaks of kangaroo or possum skin. The Aboriginalwomen wore skirts woven from leaves. The womenand the men also wore necklaces and pendants madeof shells.

Aboriginal Shelter

The Aboriginal people lived close to water sourcesbecause they had to hunt animals. When the foodsupplies and the water dried up the people moved to a

new place where they had new food supplies and water.

Aboriginal Art

Music and dance is a part of Aboriginal people’s life. TheAboriginal people also teach lessons by using music. TheAboriginal people also tell stories, perform ceremoniesand record history. The Aboriginal people used people’svoices and used instruments to make music. TheAboriginal people also used clap stick(two sticks

rhythmically clapped together) and boomerangs. TheAboriginal people also used hands to make sounds byclapping. The Aboriginal people have a specialinstrument called the didjeridu. They are a kind of trumpet or horn. It was an instrument that was usedby Aboriginal people in northwestern parts of Australia.Aboriginal Food

The Aboriginal people eat insects and they eat ants,grubs, caterpillars and moths. They get the insectsfrom the mangrove trees by cutting them out of thebark. They also eat animals such as kangaroo, emus,

sea cows, turtles and seals. Aboriginal men hunted biganimals like kangaroo, emus, sea cows, turtles andseals in the sea. The Aboriginal women hunted smalleranimals like lizards, snakes and possums. TheAboriginal people made containers, water bags, basketsand large bowls with animal skins or bones. TheAboriginal people also found things like fruit, seedsand eggs for food. Aboriginal people used knives,spears, axes and shields for hunting animals.

Aboriginal Religion and Traditions

The Aboriginal people believe that their ancestorscreated the world and the Aboriginal people also believetheir ancestors let them live on as sprits. The Aboriginalknew their ancestors through painting, storytelling,singing, dancing and playing. Also the Aboriginal peopleconnect with their ancestors and keep the land they ownas a spiritual place.

What happened when this societyencountered Europeans?

When the Europeans came to Australia theybrought with them their diseases such as smallpox, measles, influenza and other illnesses. Theforeigners also brought alcohol and substancesthat the Aboriginal people had never hadbefore. Later Aboriginal people had to live in

special places called reserves. These reserveswere far from their traditional lands. TheAboriginal people couldn’t use their languageand the Aboriginal people couldn’t travel freelyand practice their traditions on those reserves.
