Seoul ADeX growing together with Asian market The 10th Seoul International Aerospace & Defense

Exhibition (Seoul ADEX), with 20 years’ history, showed 17% growth (based on the exhibition area) over the preceding exhibition, aligning its amazing growth trend with the explosive increase in the aerospace and defense industries in Asia.

Asia is expected to introduce the largest number of airplanes over the next two decades. In this fast-growing market, Seoul ADEX is effectively playing its role as an important marketplace that links sellers with buyers, drawing considerable interest and the participation of many people.

Especially in the last exhibition, nine national pavilions were set up, one each from the USA, Israel, India, France, the UK, Australia, Poland, Indonesia, and South Africa, raising the status of Seoul ADEX as an international

exhibition. First introduced in last Seoul ADEX, the ground

equipment maneuver demonstration field on the site hosted 23 pieces of ground equipment comprising 19 types, which were developed by South Korea. Each demonstration session was fully packed with spectators and received rave responses and positive reviews from participants.

Seoul ADEX will continue its best efforts to help participating companies achieve optimum results. It will do so by introducing advanced exhibition services and reinforcing its exhibitors friendly policy, in close cooperation with the South Korean government and armed forces.

plan for Seoul ADeX 2017Seoul ADEX 2017 will be held at the Seoul Airport from

October 17 to 22, 2017. The last Seoul ADEX was successful, where the

aerospace and defense industries were perfectly harmonized in the operation of the ground equipment maneuver demonstration field on the exhibition site. The next event will maintain such a positive theme as an integrated exhibition for the aerospace and defense industries representing South Korea. It will be held only at the Seoul Airport, with the best scheduling of an indoor exhibition, seminars, an outdoor exhibition, and

the ground equipment maneuver demonstration. These characteristics will enable the participants of Seoul ADEX to conduct their business related to the Asian market, information exchanges, and market research efficiently within a short period of time.

Seoul ADEX prioritizes its full support for the business activities of exhibiting companies. It will provide the best business environment for the exhibition in 2017 so that all participating entities can carry out their business activities conveniently and effectively.

plan for the development and launch of lunar orbiter for testingLunar exploration is a space development project according to the Mid- to Long-term Space Development Plan

(2014–2040) of the South Korean government. The goal of step 1 (2016–2018) is to develop and launch a lunar orbiter for testing, with international cooperation (NASA). The goal of step 2 (2018–2020) is to develop a lunar orbiter and a lunar landing module by South Korea’s own efforts (based on the development experience obtained from step 1) and to launch them by using a Korean projectile. Step 1 of the lunar exploration project will be managed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. It will drive the

development of a 550 kg-class lunar orbiter for testing, a main body of the orbiter for launching, a payload, and a deep space ground station (the projectile will be developed through an international contest), as well as carry out preliminary research for step 2 of the project.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration launched the Korean Fighter Aircraft Development Project in earnest by signing the main agreement with Korea Aerospace Industries(KAI), the priority company for KF-X.

The development period of the KF-X Project spans 10 years and 6 months. The system development will be completed by the first half of 2026, and the deployment will be started on the second half of 2026. To prevent any vacuum in the air force, the initial mass production will be completed by 2028, and the follow-up mass production will be carried out as planned.

The KF-X Project aims to supplement the shortage that followed the phase-out of the old fighters (F-4 and F-5) of the armed forces and to develop Korean fighter aircraft with a level of performance that corresponds to the future battlefield operation concepts. It will be carried out as an international joint research project and developed under the leadership of KAI, based on the technological power of the South Korean aviation industry.

The KF-X Project’s system development has twofold goals. One is to independently fill the demand for the air fighting power of the Korean Air Force starting in 2020 by developing a Korean fighter with a medium-level performance. The other goal is to advance to the

international market for fighters of the same class.Furthermore, the Agency for Defense Development of

South Korea plans to possess independent performance improvement abilities for major equipment, such as the development of the Active Electronically Scanned Array(AESA) radar and system integration.

Joint development agreement with indonesia

The KF-X developer KAI signed an agreement on the joint development of KF-X with the Indonesian Department of Defense and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), the Indonesian state-run aviation company. Indonesia’s investment will amount to 20% of the Korean fighter system development funds, and it will receive a prototype and various technical data. The PTDI will dispatch up to 100 people per year starting in May 2016 to participate in the aircraft design, interpretation, and system areas.

Defense power improvement budget for 2016The national defense budget

for 2016 increased by 3.6% over 2015. In the defense budget, the defense power improvement expenses for the purchase and the research and development of major weapons for new forces (including aircraft, fire power, and vessels) increased by 5.7% over 2015. Major undertakings include 20 projects for the reinforcement of core forces to suppress a full-scale war and the local provocations by North Korea, such as the Kill-Chain

Project and the Korean Missile Defense (KAMD) Project. Other major initiatives include 40 projects for the enhancement of core abilities to establish independent defense preparation, such as the next fighter, in-flight tanker, wheel-type combat vehicles, and K9 self-propelled artillery. The budget of the Korean Armed Forces has increased by at least USD 8.3 billion compared to 2009 and is steadily rising at the rate of 4.5% per year.

Activation of the introduction of unmanned aerial vehicles - promotion of multilateral projects to create demand for unmanned aerial vehicles

South Korea already possesses high-level technological power in the unmanned aerial vehicle industry by developing the second tilt-rotor in the world, but industrialization is being delayed due to the lagging market formation. Hence, the South Korean government has decided to induce the initial market formation by carrying out public pilot projects in monitoring, delivery, and relief areas starting in 2016, including the

inspection of energy facilities (such as power and gas) and drone-based, post office door-to-door delivery.

Furthermore, to institutionally support the creation of demand, the South Korean government plans to prepare standards for specifications and stability and to implement the priority procurement of good products. To build the foundation for the unmanned aerial vehicle industry, the government will also encourage

the establishment of special-purpose corporations to operate unmanned aerial vehicles and hold forums to invite investments in these products. To expand the marketing base, it will set up a dedicated exhibition pavilion in the Seoul ADEX and hold international seminars and contests. Additionally, it will build infrastructure, such as the construction of a national total aviation performance test center in Goheung, Jeollanam-do.

Aggressive introduction of aircraft by Korean airlinesKorean airline companies, including low-cost carriers

(LCCs) and large airlines, such as Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, are purchasing aircraft. The LCCs intend to expand their size and profitability through new routes, while the large airlines intend to increase their profitability by converting their fleet to state-of-the-art aircraft.

The Korean LCCs brought in a total of 36 aircraft in 2014 and 2015. Jeju Air introduced 6 new aircraft in 2015 and plans to operate 40 aircraft by 2020. Jin Air, the first domestic LCC to operate a long-distance route (Incheon–Hawaii), introduced 6 aircraft. Eastar Jet and Tway Air introduced 3 new aircraft, respectively. The Busan-based LCC, Air Busan, purchased 2 aircraft.

The major airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, are also actively purchasing new aircraft. Korean Air obtained 15 new aircraft in 2015, increasing its fleet to 158, based on the

strategy to reduce both transportation costs and pollutants through the introduction of state-of-the-art aircraft. In April 2015, Korean Air announced that it would introduce a total of 100 next-generation aircraft between 2019 and 2025, including Boeing B737MAX-8 and Airbus A321NEO.

Asiana Airlines introduced 4 aircraft, increasing its fleet to 86, including 75 passenger airplanes and 11 freight airplanes.

Combat arrangement of unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissanceKorean Air and the Defense

Acquisition Program Administration signed an agreement on the mass production of unmanned aerial vehicles, which will be deployed for division reconnaissance missions. This type of unmanned aircraft was developed in November 2014 after four years of research, received the determination of its battle eligibility after an operation test in 2015, and obtained the first certification for an unmanned

aerial vehicle in South Korea. Korean Air explained, “We

have focused our abilities on the development of unmanned aerial vehicles since the late 1990s, and now, we are carrying forward projects such as the medium-altitude-class unmanned aerial vehicle for division reconnaissance, the tilt-loader, and 500MD unmanned business.”
