Except for very short sentences, these conjunctions are always preceded by a comma.

- A complex sentence is one independent clause plus one dependent clause.

Dependent clauses do not express a complete thought and can’t stand alone as sentences. A dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction.

- The two clauses are joined by a subordinating conjunction

Follow these formats when writing complex sentences:

o DEPENDENT CLAUSE, INDEPENDENT CLAUSE Since I have no milk, I’ll go to the store.

dependent clause.

The part of the sentence w/ the sub. conjunction is called the

dependent clause.

*It is dependent because it can’t stand alone.*

comma after it.

If a dependent clause comes at the end, DON’T use a

comma.
