Compound Sentence is a sentence
that consists of two or more independent clauses
EXAMPLE :
Mushrooms grow in damp places ,
so they look like umbrellas

SENTENCE ?

Compound-Complex Sentence is a sentence that
consists of at least two independent clauses
and at least one dependent clause

When you connect two main clauses with a coordinating conjunction, use a comma
MAIN CLAUSE + , + coordinating conjunction +nMAIN CLAUSE
While I am at work, my dog Floyd sleeps on the bed , and my cat Buster naps in the bathtub
Pattern 1 — Connecting two main clauses
You can also use a coordinating conjunction to connect any two items
ITEM + coordinating conjunction + ITEM
My dog Floyd has too many fleas and too much hair.
My cat Buster has beautiful blue eyes but a destructive personality.
Pattern 2 — Connecting two items
When you have three or more items in a series, you generally use a comma
before the coordinating conjunction.

Singing, dancing, and swimming are my favorite hobby
Pattern 3 — Connecting three or more items in a series
NOTES
1. When the subject is the same in all parts of the sentences, we do not usually repeat it :
Same subject :Tom phoned . he left a massage.Tom phoned and (he ) left a massage.
Different subjects : Tom phoned . Frank answered.Tom phoned and Frank answered.
2. We usually repeat the subject after so :
he couldn’t find his pen, so he wrote in pencil.
3. We always have to repeat the subject after for.
We rarely stay at hotel, for we can’t afford it.
