SeniorS’ Chat
Itsy Bitsies by n
It has been a very wet MAY! Remember when we
were little, we used to sing,
“Rain, Rain, go away
Come again another day
Little your name wants to play” ?
Or, we were perplexed when our
moms or dads said, “it’s raining cats
and dogs.”
Then there is this old saying our mothers may have
said: “In every life, some rain must fall.”
Then, there’s Hallmark and companies saying, “It’s
raining bouquets of flowers” or ‘April showers bring
May flowers.’
At a luncheon with some women friends, this
question came up: “What do you do when it rains?”
Interestingly so, most said they cleaned up more
thoroughly, as in cleaning out drawers, scrubbing
refrigerators, or re-arranging stuff in cabinets. I was
thinking, why!? Why settle for something so
mundane? Why not do a hobby? (I wonder what
men do!) What do YOU do?
Here’s looking forward to a sunny June!

Several weeks ago Nell Garrette had a fall and fractured her hip. We, your friends from Happy Hands, were very
sorry to learn of your accident. We wish you best wishes for a quick recovery.
Dee Carrell continues to improve. She still has to keep her foot up on the footstool.
Carolyn Willis and her dog Blackie were in the front yard when she was attacked by a Great Dane when it jumped
over the fence from a neighbor’s back yard. Blackie was high up in the air shaking violently by the dog. Carolyn
was fortunate to make it let go of Blackie and fought to keep it from going after Blackie again. She was knocked
down to the ground lying flat on her back but never letting go of its collar. Fortunately the owner heard her screams
and removed the dog. He drove Blackie and Carolyn to the Animal Hospital immediately. Blackie had an
emergency major abdominal surgery to repair the inside caused by the bites as well as a fractured rib. Carolyn is
happy to report that Blackie has recovered from the surgery and is walking and running again.

In Memory of Jill Lensbower [http://hosting-17924.tributes.com/show/Jill-S-Lensbower-93814351]
Jill Swing Goodlatte Lensbower died unexpectedly at the age of 67 on May
13, 2012 at her home in Alexandria, VA. She had been unwell for some
time. She was born on February 23, 1945 in New Brunswick, NJ, the
second child of Raymond and Karen Swing Goodlatte. Jill developed
pneumococcal meningitis at age 3 months. Thanks to penicillin, an
experimental drug, which was tried as a last ditch effort to save her life -
she survived with only deafness, mild balance problems, and a seizure disorder. Jill attended Horace
Mann School for the Deaf in Roxbury, MA during ages 4-6. After move to Putney, VT, she attended
the Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro, VT, graduating in 1963. She graduated from
Gallaudet University with a B.A. in Mathematics in 1972.
On December 22, 1977 she married Gary Gilbert Lensbower in Falls Church, VA. They had one
child, Gilbert, born July 7, 1979. One of Jill’s greatest hardships was losing her husband Gary after
10 years of marriage. He had Juvenile-onset diabetes and died after a very difficult and prolonged
illness. Jill assisted Gary, “The American Deaf Magician” in his shows. Jill raised son Gilbert, who
now works as a sign language interpreter. She had a great passion for genealogy research; an interest
that began at age 8. She was a member of National Association of the Deaf, Northern Virginia
Association of the Deaf (where she served as treasurer for 18 terms), National Fraternal Society of
the Deaf, and National Society of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).
Jill is survived by son, Gilbert Lensbower of Germantown, MD, and two sisters, Kip Curtis of
Alexandria, VA and Joyce Swing Goodlatte of Oakland, CA. She was predeceased by her husband
Gary in November 1987, brother Dirk in 1949, father Raymond in November 2009 and mother
Karen Swing Goodlatte in May 2011. Services followed by a reception will be held on Saturday,
June 2, 2012, at 9 am at the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, 2932 King Street, Alexandria, VA
22302. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Northern Virginia Association of the Deaf,
3951 Pender Drive, Suite 130, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Hawaiian Wedding Cake
1 package (18.25 ounces) Duncan Hines Yellow
cake mix
1 can (6 or 8 ounces) Dole crushed pineapple with
juice
1 cup milk
1 container (8 ounces) frozen whipped cream
topping, thawed
Preheat oven to 325
degrees. Grease and flour
a 9x13 inch pan. Prepare
and bake cake mix
according to directions on
the package for the 9x13
inch cake pan. Remove
cake from oven. While cake is hot, poke holes
through the cake with the round handle of a wooden
spoon. Holes should be at 1-inch intervals. Pour
crushed pineapple and juice over the cake. Let the
cake cool. When the cake is cooled, put mixture of
milk and whipping topping on top of the cake.
If desired, you can put some cherries on top, and
sprinkle coconut flakes. Some recipes call for 2
packages (3.5 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix.
If you use this ingredient, mix that with milk and
whipped topping.
