5 Water Exercises for Seniors
5. Swimming
Swimming is a classic type of good -for-you, heart-rate-raising exercise. No maeryour experience level or how many strokes you may or may not know, understandthis: Swimming is one of the best overall workouts you can do. It aects yourwhole body. It benets your heart, yourlung funcon, your exibility, your muscletone and strength --it's also low-impact and burns as many as 500 to 650 calories
in an hour.
If you don't already know how to swim, or you're just feeling out of pracce, check out your local gym, tness center or YMCA to learn the strokes or brush upon your technique before diving in.
4. Water Aerobics
Most of us are familiar with aerobic exercises, also called endurance exercises --these include acvies such as walking, dancing and step class at thegym. Thistype of exercise increases ourheart ratesand oers substanal heart and lunghealth benets in addion toweight lossor weight management. Aerobic exercisealso helps to improve our moods. What you might not be familiar with is the idea of doing aerobic exercise whileimmersed in water. Aqua aerobics classes are oered at many local gyms, tnesscenters and YMCAs. Some are tailored toward one specic type of exercise suchas water dancing, walking or running, while others combine various aerobic acvi-es --everything from jumping jacks to dancing. A typical class will likely last
about an hour, including me to warm-up and cool
-down, during which you'll be
immersed in water that's roughly chest-deep.
3. Strength Training
If you think you can't benet from strength training, also calledresistance train-ing, think again. Forty-ve percent of women age 65 and older can't li 10
pounds. And that jumps to 65 percent of women who are 75 or older.Praccing strength training at least two days every week can help to reduce yourrisk of straining to pick up a jug of milk, for example. It's a slow form of exercisethat forces yourmusclesto work against resistance, in turn making those musclesstronger.Tradional, out-of-water strength training may use free weights, an elasc re-sistance band or a cable machine. When pracced in water, though, there areadded benets. While the resistance could sll be from weights, bands or otherequipment, the water itself also provides resistance when you move. Addionally, the added buoyancy helps reduce the stress that exercise can place on joints,
knees and hips, reducing chronic pain and increasing your range of moon.
2. Relaxaon
Floang in water. There isn't much beer, is there? Relaxaon is an important part of well-rounded health. Praccing relaxaon tech-niques in a pool of warm water can help to loosen ght muscles and ease jointpain, whether from aging, chronic illness or injury. It may also help to reduce yourblood pressure, reduce your heart rate and reduce the amount of stress hormoneyour body produces while boosng your energy and your immune system. Lookfor classes that teach water-based relaxaon techniques --or pracce at home --such as progressive muscle relaxaon, yoga or mindful meditaon to help youachieve both physical and mental balance.
1. Balance Exercises
If you're like many people over the age of 65, you may worry aboutfalling. Andit's a worry founded in fact: 1 in 3 adults over the age of 65 falls every year, and asmany as 20 to 30 percent of those who fall have injuries such as hip fractures, laceraons and head traumas (including traumac brain injury) [source:Centersfor Disease Control and Prevenon].Maintaining good balance into your senior years is important for reducing yourrisk of falling. Look for classes such as tai chi or yogathat are oered in water --they'll boost your balance, and praccing the movement while immersed in waterwill allow you greater range of moon and reduce the strain on your joints. Andbecause it's pracced in the water, you don't have to worry about being injuredfrom falls while parcipang.

CDC study of extreme heat shows importance of staying cool
As temperatures are heang up, the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-
venon (CDC) is reminding people to keep a cool head.
About 650 deaths each year from extreme heat could have been prevent-
ed, the CDC warned in a study published on June 6 in its journalMorbidity
and Mortality Weekly Report. In total there were 7,233 heat-related deaths
from 1999 to 2009.
"Heat-related illnesses and deaths are preventable. Taking steps to stay
cool, hydrated and informed in extreme temperatures can prevent serious
health eects like heat exhauson and heat stroke," said lead author Ethel
Taylor, a researcher who works with the CDC.
In 2012, one large-scale heat event claimed 32 lives.Temperatures went
above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and lasted for two weeks from June 30 to
July 13, 2012. Nearly 3.8 million people lost power, some for up to eight
days. Twelve deaths were reported in Maryland, 12 in Virginia, seven in
Ohio and one in West Virginia.
Most at risk for heat illnesses and death are the elderly, children, the poor
or those with pre-exising medical condions. For the 2012 cases, half of
vicms were aged 65 and older, and 72 percent were male. Three-fourths
of the me, the vicms were unmarried or living alone.
"Having a 'heat response plan' is vital to those who are elderly, live alone or
who do not have air condioning. The goal is to focus on praccal interven-
ons for these groups of people to limit heat exposure in the event of an
extreme heat event," Dr. Robert Glaer, an emergency medicine physician
at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, told CBSNews.com. He was not involved
in the CDC study.
In 14 of the deaths, people had cardiovascular disease, and in four situa-
ons, the vicms had chronic respiratory disease.
"At least part of the reason for the heightened risk is related to the disease
itself placing people at higher risk for dehydraon as well as hyperthermia.
However, an important addional factor is related to specic types of med-
icaons (blood pressure pills, diurecs) which can ulmately aect uid
balance and the state of hydraon in the seng of extreme heat," Glaer
pointed out.
Sixty-nine percent of the vicms died at home, and there was no air condi-
oning 91 percent of the me.
The CDC recommended that in hot weather, people should try to keep
their body temperatures down and stay hydrated. Wear appropriate cloth-
ing for the occasion, whether indoors or outside.
Being aware of extreme heat events and looking for warning signs for heat-
related illness can also be helpful.
Heat stoke is a condion in which the body cannot regulate its own tem-perature, and may lead to death or permanent disability. Symptoms in-
clude a high body temperature above 103 degrees F, dizziness, nausea,
confusion and unconsciousness. People may also have red, hot and dryskin with no sweang and a rapid, strong pulse. They could also experience
a throbbing headache.
If someone is experiencing heat stroke, get them to a shady area and help
cool them with whatever methods you know including pung them in a
tub of cool water or a cool shower. Try to get their body temperature to
drop to 101 to 102 degrees F. Do not give the vicm something to drink,
and get them medical help quickly.
Heat exhauson is a milder form of heat-illness which can occur aer a few
days of exposure to hot temperatures without replenishing uids. Signs
include heavy sweang, paleness, muscle cramps, redness, weakness,
dizziness, headache, nausea and voming and fainng. The person may
have a fast and weak pulse as well as breathing, and the skin may be cool
and moist.
If you see a person going through heat exhauson, make sure they cool o
through rest, drinking cool, nonalcoholic beverages and stay in a colder
area. Get medical help if their symptoms worsen or persist over an hour.
"Water is the ideal uid for hydraon, and it is recommended to avoid
excessive amounts of caeine which can lead to dehydraon," Glaer
explained. "Sports or energy drinks which contain high amounts of caeine
as well as sugar, and are not recommended in the seng of extreme heat
as they also predispose individuals to great amounts of water loss and
subsequent dehydraon."
