Slide 2: Who am I?

Student: Hey my name is Torntanat Cheng, my nickname is Jump which is what people call me around school. I was born on November 22nd 1993, so currently I am eighteen years old now and I have attended ISB for 13 years. My future plans are going to a hotel management school in Switzerland. Today I will be talking about the different ways of knowing that I have experienced in some past events in my life.

Slide 3: Ways of Knowing

Interviewer: Can you identify what the four ways of knowing are?

Student: The four ways of knowing are Emotion, Perception, Reason, and Language.

Slide 4: The events I’ll be talking about

Interviewer: What are the different ways of knowing you will be mentioning and what were the events that you can relate to the ways of knowing?

Student: The two events I will be talking about is a community service trip over GCW and summer which Maekok River Village, this will cover Language and emotion as for the other event is my intern at a company called Clexpert, which will cover Reason and Language.

Slide 5: Maekok River Village

Interviewer: Can you explain what you had to do at the Maekok River Village?

Student: Last year for my GCW trip, I went to the north of Thailand to a province called Chiang Mai. We went to the Maekok River Village resort where we were located near public schools in the area so that we would go do community service there. We went to the school called Mae Selak School. This school is a Thai public school that went from pre-k till 8th grade. The students are taught by 4 teachers, an English teacher, a math teacher, a science teacher and a Thai teacher. This school provides home stays for students who’s house is too far away to go there and back during the mornings and afternoon. We came here to teach these kids English and build them a canteen. We gave the kids the opportunity to learn English from English speaking students. My

friends and I then, went back up to the north during summer to teach the same kids again.

Interviewer: Why did you choose to talk about this event?

Student: I chose this trip because there are things I can relate to that had to do with the 4 ways of knowing. During this trip, we were told to teach the students English, but as a Thai speaker I had it easy. But the group consisted of Thai and non- Thai speakers therefore I had to act as the translator. There is a language barrier between the students and the teacher making it hard for the students to understand and cooperate with what we say. This goes under the category of Language in the ways of knowing. Another reason was because during the trip, we spent a week with the kids. Every day we would teach them, play with them, and this created a bond between the kids and us. Not one person left that place without being emotional. When we left the kids asked what if we were going to come back, and my friends and I said yes. That up coming summer, my friends and I went up to Maekok River Village again to teach the kids English and spend time with them. This covers the area of emotion in the ways of knowing.

Interviewer: As a result of this trip, what can you conclude about yourself?

Student: As a result of this trip, I can conclude that from this experience, I have learnt to understand how to translate and converse with people from different languages in a way where everyone understands. Also, I understood the connection between student and teacher and how it feels to leave the students. You feel like you need to teach more, because you want to educate these kids. IF possible, I would come back here for a third time.

Interviewer: What was the other event you decided to choose to talk about?

Student: The other event is Marine Biology in the similans. Here, we were on a diving trip for a span of a week in order to get our advance diving license. Towards the end of the trip we went to one of the islands to do community service. The community service we did was picking up trash from the bottom of the ocean.

Slide 8: Continuing…

Interviewer: Why did you choose to talk about this trip?

Student: I chose to talk about this trip because there was a language barrier underwater. We were taught sign language to use underwater before we went on the trip. The sign languages are to use to indicate danger, low oxygen tank, and directions.

This covers the area of language in the ways of knowing. Another reason I chose this was because it covered perception, another aspect of the ways of knowing. To the dive masters, since they are familiar to the area, for them it was like swimming around in a swimming pool. As for us, the second we jumped in the water, we felt lost. If we were to lose sight of our dive master, we would’ve been lost. It felt like I was walking around in a country I didn’t know about.

Interviewer: As a result of this trip, what can you conclude about yourself?

Student: As a result of this trip, I can conclude that I’ve understood how to communicate in another language and that being sign language. This enhances my knowledge on language, which is applicable for the future. And as a result of swimming around in unknown areas, I was taught how to navigate underwater using an underwater compass. Again, enhancing my ability in travelling around under water.
