Bainbridge Island is once again celebrating its greatest off-island export: The graduating class of Bainbridge High School.

Get ready, world.Get ready to welcome our best and brightest, the better versions of ourselves, full of hope and promise and

enthusiasm and determination.It’s been a long, eventful journey for these 323 members of the Class of 2014. So much has happened in their

world, one shaped by terrorism and technology, hard times and high hopes.As kindergartners, their first weeks of school were shadowed by the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001 that

forever changed our nation and our world.2001 was also the year of the iPod, Enron’s collapse, the shoebomber, anthrax attacks and the start of the War

on Terrorism.By the time this year’s graduating class, entered third grade, YouTube had launched, “Twilight” was the rage

and something called Facebook was popping up on computer screens across America.Ninetendo’s Wii followed in 2006 — the same year the billionth song was downloaded from iTunes — and

in 2007, people were starting to read books on a device called a Kindle. It was also the year of the final book featuring a young wizard with glasses; “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

By sixth grade, there were iPhones, the start of the Great Recession, and the country had elected its first black president.

Seventh grade brought Twitter, and a second Twilight movie. By eighth grade, the country was consumed by the debate over health care as Obamacare became law, and a devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

By the time Bainbridge’s newest Spartans entered high school, Osama bin Laden had been killed, and by the end of 2011, the war in Iraq was over and the last U.S. combat troops came home.

Their sophomore year was marked with Hurricane Sandy, and the reelection of President Obama, and here at home, Jay Inslee was elected governor.

With graduation comes time to reflect, not only on the larger events of our American life over the past 13 years, but on the many more personal memories of our graduates’ march into adulthood. First dances, first kisses, new teachers, old friends, league championships won, rivalry games that ended in tears rather than triumph.

Bainbridge has prepared these students well for the world they will inherit. Get ready then, world, for this group of special Spartans who will help shape history as much as they live it.
