Senior Executive Programme

You’re at a point in your career where being successful means setting the strategic direction of your organisation and steering fundamental change.

Now, decisions are more far-reaching. Performance is crucial. Balancing strategic priorities, leading teams and establishing competitive advantage are critical.

The Senior Executive Programme (SEP) equips you with the confidence and skills to master the three elements of success: Strategy, Leadership and Transformation. It brings together an elite and diverse group of senior executives, renowned academics and industry experts in a dynamic business forum, where dialogue and debate challenge, stimulate and inspire you.

Over four intensive weeks, SEP empowers you to shape tomorrow’s strategy while delivering on today’s objectives. We focus on value creation and enable you to become an effective and respected leader – one who can set a clear direction for your organisation, influence and communicate ideas, and ultimately inspire others.

By the end of the programme, you gain a new, invaluable network of fellow leaders and become part of London Business School’s alumni community, an active and global group of more than 37,000 ambitious professionals.

Create the future for yourself and your organisation – today.

The Senior Executive Programme interweaves three critical management themes: Strategy, Leadership and Transformation.

Strategy To achieve sustainable success in today’s business climate, it’s vital you continue to re-engineer your strategy to keep it in tune with evolving markets, competitors and customers.

Successful strategic planning and implementation requires proactive engagement with both internal and external stakeholders. As a leader you need to encourage and recognise an enterprise environment at every level through your processes, incentives, culture and financial goals.

We will broaden your strategic thinking and increase your ability to maximise viable opportunities, so your organisation can gain competitive advantage. By exploring the concept of disruptive innovation, you will focus on how to identify critical success factors. You’ll consider how your business perceives, creates and sustains shareholder value in order to evaluate and recognise the proposals that will bring results.

LeadershipWhy should anyone be led by you? Explore this theme through in-depth analysis of your individual leadership style and discover key areas of effectiveness to achieve organisational change. Before SEP starts, we gather a picture of your preferred

management style via our 360-degree survey. By examining yourself, your team and your organisation, you are better placed to understand the positive drivers of each and lead real transformation. These insights empower you to build high-performance teams with a shared business vision and set of values.

TransformationThe need to act without knowledge of what the future holds is the central challenge you face as a business leader. We prepare you for managing in uncertain times and explain how to build an agile organisation to respond to this.

Change initiatives often fall short of their objectives because they are conceived as a linear process with a defined finish. In order to achieve meaningful change, we ask you to question conventional wisdom and accepted practice, and view transformation as a sustained process of renewal rather than an event with a beginning, middle and end. You will explore how to sustain ongoing innovation across your organisation, while also appreciating the natural tensions that it carries with it. You learn methods to avoid its derailment and the key steps required to successfully engage and increase your influence with stakeholders.

At the end of the programme, with the help of your SEP peers and coaches, you shape a re-entry plan complete with personal and leadership targets. It will be a manual capable of transforming a ‘safe pair of hands’ into a capable agent of change.

“SEP challenges your way of thinking, explores contemporary best practice and provides innovative leadership models. I’m much more confident in my abilities.” Jennene Buckley (Australian), SEP2010, CEO, Feros Care

2 Leading in a time of crisis

One of the hardest skills to acquire is to answer difficult questions clearly, calmly and concisely so that, regardless of your stakeholder or the question you face, you get your key message across. Working with journalists will prepare you for future challenging corporate situations so you can credibly defend any difficult position. Topics covered include understanding how the media works, using sound bites, typical traps and managing a media crisis.

1 Achieve a better work/life balance Time on our London campus, away

from the regular day-to-day routine, provides you with a unique opportunity to consciously address not only your professional strategy but also how it fits with your overall lifestyle. The programme includes a comprehensive optional wellness programme to encourage you to maximise energy and stamina for greater professional and personal satisfaction. Emphasis is put on techniques you can use to achieve a good work-life balance, improve eating habits, sleep routines and exercise, in order to reduce stress.

3 Corporate governance

How can companies govern themselves in a way that adds value for all stakeholders? This part of the programme looks at issues facing board members today using research into topics such as:Accountability – we examine recent high- profile organisations in distress, often as a result of accountancy fraud, and focus on who is accountable for these crises, and individual or cultural culpability.Shareholder activism – how to manage shareholders who use an equity stake in a corporation to put pressure on its management; plus other control and ownership issues including family ownership and diffuse shareholders.

From the participants…Three alumni share their views on how SEP changed their leadership style and perspective

Mandy Seymour (British), SEP2012, CEO, Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust

It’s hard to put into words exactly what my experience on the programme has meant to me. My entire career has been spent in the public sector and I was headhunted into the NHS to manage a pilot in health and social care. I’ve been lucky enough to find a real passion for my work there.

When I reached COO level, my next step wasn’t immediately clear. I don’t have formal qualifications aside from a BTEC in Business Studies, so my challenge was mostly about confidence building. At first on SEP, I felt very vulnerable, but I quickly realised my professional experiences were really valued. Studying in such a high-powered environment, and seeing that those around me wanted my contributions, was incredibly empowering.

Leading 3000 staff, who deliver within the community, it’s essential I communicate effectively across the organisation. Getting my key messages through at national and international level is also critical. Several sessions on the programme helped me with this. Learning how to hook people in and engage their hearts and minds is a skill I utilise again and again.

I believe I was on the right track before I did SEP, but I now have theory to back up what I do, I speak more resolutely, engage and inspire my team, and create an environment where people can innovate. My promotion to CEO was the concrete outcome of completing SEP, but it is the inner confidence I’ve achieved that is the long-term gain.

“My promotion to CEO was the concrete outcome of SEP, but confidence is my real long-term gain.”

“SEP has grown my confidence so I can think, and act, in a world-leading manner.”

Sivi Pillay (South African), SEP2012,COO, Woolworths Financial Services

SEP gave me a month to focus on my personal development and learn, unlearn and re-learn from the best lecturers and senior executives in the world. It exposed me to an abundance of concepts in leadership that will last me a lifetime.

I now recognise my strengths; I understand how to be an authentic leader, with the skills to deliver results. I give my team more space to run the business and execute with clear accountability, while I focus on enterprise transformation driving enterprise change across all levels in our business.

Previously, I’d been very internally focused. SEP allowed me to benchmark myself globally, something you can’t do sitting at your own desk. It gave me a different perspective and reset my career – so I can move from ordinary to extraordinary.

Terry A’Hearn (Australian), SEP2010, CEO/Deputy Secretary, Northern Ireland Environment Agency/Department of Environment

SEP impressed me with its interactive and elite learning experience, and for how the programme connects to the world.

It provided quite simple insights backed by very sophisticated learning materials. There are 800 people in my organisation, skilled in all sorts of areas I know little about. My job is to lead them to achieve successful environmental outcomes. Our group of 40 executives from diverse countries and industries saw how we all shared the same challenges. It was a great way to boost confidence in my capabilities. SEP taught me to think, and act, in a world-leading manner. I’m not afraid to set world-class performance as our target.

“I now know my strengths, how to be an authentic leader and how to deliver results.”
