Senior PhaseCourse Planning
Mrs Sloan
Coursing
• Our commitment to all pupils at Drummond is to ensure that each young person leaves school with two things:
• The skills needed to lead them into a positive and sustained destination
• To ensure each young person attains the highest possible level of qualifications to support their chosen Pathway
• Our pathways include a broad range of SQA courses and awards from SCQF level 2-7 and are implemented in collaboration with our partners from Edinburgh College, third sector organisations and industry.
Structure
Qualifications
• Nationals Qualifications (NQs) - are qualifications studied in secondary schools. These are offered at National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Pupils only sit an exam at National 5, Higher and Adv Higher.
• Skills for Work Courses – focus on employability skills needed for success in the workplace. The courses offer learners opportunities to learn these skills through a variety of practical experiences that are linked to vocational areas. Skills for Work courses help young people to develop their self-confidence. Drummond currently offer Travel & Tourism, Lab Science and Sport & Recreation at Level 4/5. Pupils are assessed unit by unit – there is no final exam.
• National Progression Award (NPAs) - are available in a variety of sectors, from Construction and Childcare to areas such as Digital Literacy and Social Software. They're aimed at assessing a defined set of skills and knowledge in specialist vocational areas. We offer NPA level 5 in Business & IT – there is no final exam for this course.
National 5 or Level 5?
• Shifting emphasis on National and Higher and AH qualifications
– account for less than 10% of SQA catalogue.
• Schools can look at alternatives eg. Skills for Work, NPA
qualifications and Youth work programmes
• Additional awards can be generated through evidence from
core taught subjects
• 55 National 5’s
• 750+ qualifications at level 5 / 800 at level 6
What is the SCQF?
• Level?
• Credit points?
• Insight tariff points?
• A way of describing and comparing qualifications. Levels from 1-12 (difficulty) and credit points (how much work is involved)
• National 5 = SCQF level 5
• Advanced Higher = SCQF Level 7
• A higher has 24 SCQF credit points = 240 hours of learning

Why are we participating in the SCQF programme?
• Raise awareness of alternative curriculum courses available to our students outside of the traditional SQA National Qualifications.
• Further educate families so they understand and can contribute when supporting student coursing choices.
• Meets the remit of DYW very well as it shows pupils the range of courses available.
School Bronze/Silver/Gold Ambassadors Programme
• The Project: To develop a nationwide programme in schools to raise awareness and understanding of the SCQF
• The Aim: to provide schools with the capacity “in-house” to raise awareness and levels of understanding of the Framework. A need to build capacity for all schools to get the message to parents and pupils.
• The Benefits: supporting flexible learning pathways for learners as they plan their learner journey, understanding the many different learning programmes on the Framework and how these can be compared against standard traditional qualifications. Resources and sharing of best practice across Scotland.
What is the Bronze/Silver/Gold ambassador programme?
• Over 115 schools in Scotland signed up
• 5 criteria to meet Bronze level standard
• 1. SLT meet with Donnie from SCQF
• 2. Pupil ambassadors highlighted (Toma, Artur, Rose, Rachel and Hadassa)
• 3. SCQF information on school website
• 4. Begin work on an alternative curriculum course pathway
• 5. Evidence of partnership working
