Gaining or regaining weight can be just as difficult as losing weight. When done in a smart,

healthful way, many of the same basic principles apply to both gaining and losing weight. You

may need to gain or regain weight if: You have had a serious illness or lengthy hospitalization You are an athlete who wants to build strength and muscle to perform better You are older and have unintentionally lost weight You are very thin and want to feel stronger or are self-conscious about your weight.

Here are some tips on gaining muscle or bone mass without adding extra fat: Be Realistic about Your Body Type: Genetics plays a major role in physical build and musculature. If you are thin but healthy, take a close look at your parents and siblings. The human body can change to a limited extent through weight training and increased food intake, but you’ll never be able to turn a runner’s body into that of a linebacker. If you are naturally thin, it can be harder to regain weight after illness or surgery, so every bite counts! Steer Clear of Gimmicks and Supplements: There are almost as many products advertised for “miraculous” weight gain as there are for weight loss. The smartest advice is the same in either case: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably won’t work. Skip expensive supplements and save your money for delicious nutrient-rich foods. Focus on Quality First, Quantity Second: The secret to healthy weight gain is to make all your calories as nutrient-rich as possible. Consuming more empty-calorie foods like soft drinks, candy and chips is not a successful way to build muscle, strengthen bones or repair tissue after surgery. For smart weight gain, you need the nutrient power of all the food groups. If you have a small appetite, eat five to six times a day. Drink fluids before and after meals, but not with them. This helps leave more room for food. Top your usual foods with some concentrated calories, like grated cheese on a cup of chili. Spread peanut, almond, sunflower seed or soy nut butter on a whole-grain muffin or bread. Creamy nut butters can also be added to smoothies. Prepare hot oatmeal or other cereal with milk, not water. Add powdered milk, honey, creamy nut butters, dried fruits and/or nuts after cooking. Garnish salads with healthy oils such as olive oil, whole olives, avocados, nuts and sunflow-er seeds. Pump up soups, casseroles, mashed potatoes, smoothies and liquid milk with 1 to 2 tablespoons of dry milk powder. Make an appointment with a registered dietitian to develop an eating plan that will help you gain weight in a healthy way with the foods you enjoy.

In 1972, when the vision for South Berkeley Senior Center (SBSC) was in its beginning stages,

Hellena Dorsey was employed with the City of Berkeley as a Recreation Supervisor at Grove Street Park. She began supporting the efforts to get a permanent location for SBSC and to learn about senior programming because her plan was to work at SBSC once she retired. When SBSC opened in 1979, Hellena began taking dance and exercise classes at the center.

As Hellena had planned, when she retired from the City in 1985, she began volunteering in addition to taking classes at SBSC. She is currently a volunteer for Trader Joe’s and the Mer-cy Brown Bag food give away, the Praise dance class teacher, the Inspira-tional hour discussion group leader and has served as the Chairperson for the SBSC Advisory

Council. Here are a few notable facts about Hellena: she served 4 years in the United States Navy; she is an ordained minister; she got her B.S. from San Francisco State University; she has two master degrees and she works out at the gym 2- 3 times a week. We say a BIG thank you to Hellena for over 30 years of service to the South Berkeley Senior Center!

Tackling both elder care and childcare at once is indeed impressive. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t taken its toll on its sandwich generation caregivers. In fact, there are many sandwich generation issues to report. Some of the most common reported are the following: Stress Financial Hardship Depression

Multigenerational caregivers experience high levels of stress, and many report simply not having enough time in the day to accomplish their multitude of responsibilities. Further-more, Sandwich Generation members often see a negative impact on their careers and finances. A survey sent out by A Place for Mom found that 23% of multigenerational caregivers would consider leaving their job all together, and a further 31% would attempt to reduce their hours, which can negatively impact salary. Sandwich Generation Stress Being a sandwich generation caregiver definitely requires a delicate balancing act, and stress is simply part of the job. The constant multitasking can be exhausting for caregivers. Many are women who are suffering from the triple-Ms, or “middle aged mothers in menopause,” when biologically women lose

their nurturing hormones and no longer want to take care of people. It becomes physically exhausting and mentally challenging to maintain the balancing act, and stress is one of the byproducts. Learning how to tackle stress is a necessity for sandwich generation caregivers, which is why it is crucial for caregivers to take care of them-selves by getting help from a family member, hiring respite care, or having regular breaks from caregiving. Lowering the bar is crucial for survival. Everyone needs a break. But sandwich genera-tion caregivers need to remember to take care of themselves first, otherwise they are no good to their children or parents because they are suffering from burnout. Taking care of you first is the golden rule of caregiving. Sometimes seeing a family counselor, psychiatrist or doctor is necessary for those who are sandwich generation caregivers.
