Awareness—can we learn practices that inspire us to become more aware of ourselves, others and the world we live in? In a circle of women who support us in this questioning, we will use our curiosity to learn and nurture these practic-es. One method, among others, we will focus on to start is sound—can it help us become more aware? We will be experimenting with different aspects of sound—chanting, toning, vocalizing, listening to music, etc. in order to become calm-er, peaceful and healthier. We will also use the Tarot and meditations to help and guide us in this process of growing our awareness. If you would like more information, please con-

Brenda and Ed Fergusson flew to Gaspe, Quebec in June, 2018 to compete in the Canadian/Pan Am Masters Weightlifting Champi-onship. Ed, 83 years old, maintaining his Canadian championship of men over 80 in 85kg body weight cate-gory, won the gold medal for the Canadian Masters portion and gold in the Pan Am Portion. Brenda, at 75, established new records for women 75-79 in the 75kg body weight category in the Canadian Masters portion and Pan Am Masters portion, winning two gold medals, and a silver as part of the second place, Western team in the team competition. Their next challenge is the World Masters Weight Lifting Champi-onships being held in Montreal, 2019. Ed will try to increase the Ca-nadian records for the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk that he set at age 80 and Brenda can establish new World records in her age/weight category.

The Songbirds Choir will start again on Thursday, September 6th for the Fall session. Eager to learn new mu-sic, sing for fun and joy under the talented direction of Lynn Beamond. Anyway, Happy Birthday to all those who have reached a decade this year—and to all those who are still working on it!And, we have Angela, who graciously comes in to volunteer on Wednesday mornings, who has just celebrated her 50th decade (remember yours?) Thanks for being here Angela…(and Julie isn’t that much more …). Have you noticed our sparkling floors, stripped and re-waxed in early July? The great job was done by “Forever Young”. One more reminder of the upcoming events. The forms for nominations for Life Membership will appear on the Activities board this month. They are for people you feel do more (and more and more) to improve the quality of the Centre. Please give that some thought and decide if there is someone you’d like to nominate. AND our AGM is not all the far away, so

there will be a big sheet posted this month where you may certainly add your name to become a member of the Board of Directors. It is not all work, and not very much work (unless you are Lila, or Yvonne, or Norah), and we do try to have fun! An excellent thought from ‘Jim’, who lives down the hall from my sister-in-law in Kamloops. Obviously, Jim is an old cowboy because just outside his door are a pair of cowboy boots, a steer skull, some tumbleweed and on the door, is a lariat and a sign that says “Don’t squat with your spurs on”. I thought this was very good advice for all of us!

Many of you have asked for Judy’s recipe for … PEANUT BUTTER MARSHMALLOW SQUARES

6 cups rice cereal 1 cup raisins 1 cup unsalted peanuts 1 cup unsalted sunflower seeds 3/4 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1 (400g) pkg regular or mini marshmallows 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla. IN large bowl stir together cereal, raisins, peanuts and sunflower seeds until combined. Set aside. In largest saucepan combine pea-nut butter & butter. Place over low-medium heat and stir until melted and blended. Add marshmallows and salt, stir until melted and well blended. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Immediately add cereal mixture and quickly stir until cereal is well coated. Spread mixture evenly and firmly into greased 13x9 inch pan. Let stand on rack until completely cool. Cut in squares. Makes 24 –2x2 in. squares. Cover with foil and store at room tem-perature for up to three days. (Okay in fridge as well).

SPECIAL THANKS to our president, Judy Southern and the Board of Directors, including our great affiliates. You have per-formed in outstanding fashion when I have asked for help. For that I am truly grateful. Due to personal reasons I will be retir-ing with the completion of my last trip scheduled in December. I wish to also thank Christiane Kerr for her assistance on the past few trips by collecting fares.

VERY BAD NEWS … but THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS! Thank goodness, some wonderful ladies have stepped up to form a Travel Com-mittee. A sincere (very big) thank you to Elva Standish, Joyce Butler, Linda Finney and Carolyn Gordy. I t was a beautiful morning without a cloud in the sky. The assembled baker’s dozen from Quali-

cum Beach, Port Alberni and points further east departed the Qualicum Beach Seniors’ Centre as a convoy of two shortly after 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14 … Campbell River ho!.

OUR EXCELLENT EXCURSION TO LOVELY LUND

Following a tasty lunch at Moxie’s, the group proceeded to the Way West dock to board the 28’ Island Fury. The skipper mentioned that a whale had been spotted in the vicinity the day before, raising hopes that interesting wildlife would be ours to see on the three hour tour (no, not that three hour tour!) Our exit out of the marina was delayed momentarily by the spectacle of the arrival of a 38 metre St. Vincent & Grenadines-registered yacht. Out on the water, heading west, Cape Mudge was found off our port side while a flotilla of fishing faithful, week-end warriors hopeful of catching their Big Whopper, were off starboard. Lund is located on the Mainland, 28 kms northwest of Powell River on Highway 101. On the way, we cruised past Mitlenatch Island, a provincial park, home to the largest seabird colo-ny in the Strait of Georgia. Passing by

Hernando and Savary Island, the beaches that were spotted looked most inviting. Arriving in Lund, the marina was a hub of activity with families making their way to their boats for an enjoya-ble day on the water or a remote beach. As for Nancy’s Bakery and the pollen sweater & book boutiques … if only we had more time! After our short stay, we were back on board the Island Fury for our return to Campbell River. The journey home started by heading north up Desolation Sound, then turn-ing west back towards Mitlenatch Is-land. On our way, a seal was spotted, who seemed to be as interested in us as we were in him. As we passed the North Shore of Mitlennatch, as estimat-ed harem of forty sea lions sunning themselves came into view. All were thankful that the wind was blowing the other way.

If you know Roy and would like to wish him a Happy Birthday, just come to the Centre on Monday, August 6th from 3:00 to 5:00 for cake and enjoyment. Bring your “happy hour” beverage if you wish. We will have coffee, tea and lemonade available.

Arriving back in Campbell River mari-na, a beautiful bald eagle stood senti-nel to welcome us back. On our way to the Way West dock, smartly berthed was a mega yacht that arrived in har-bour as we were departing—all as if its crew had done this many times before. The gang was loaded up and on its way back to Qualicum Beach a quarter past four. After a nice drive down the Island Highway, we found ourselves back at the Seniors’ Centre at 5:30 pm, heading back from whence we came … with visions of cold drinks dancing in our heads! A day of blue water, blue sky, hot sun, beautiful scenery and most enjoy-able conversation. A truly memorable day … even without seeing a whale! Many thanks to all involved in organ-izing this outing. And to all who “woulda, coulda, shoulda” gone on this excursion: make the next one yours!

We do have some of our members who really do not want their photos taken … so, please, if you are carrying a camera, would you please check with everyone who would possibly be in the photo as to whether or not they are comfortable with the idea. Much appreciated.

PEMBERTON VALLEY

LODGE

The 33 passengers and driver who filled the bus for an exciting, entertaining and educational trip “up the coast, around and about” … with perfect weather... what more could we ask? Five QB Senior Centre members are in the group.

time to schedule interesting and informative speak-ers in the later afternoon, we now have a 10:00 a.m. time in The Gardens. Watch for the dates—you will want to be there. Where we don’t have any daylight hours to have a ballroom dancing class, we have access to a per-

fect room in the Gardens . To set the wheels in motion, The Gar-dens will host a “Welcome Tea” for us on September 4th (and the Ramblers are entertaining—how perfect!) Of course, there will be a sign-up list for any/all of these activities. Make sure your friends join the Centre

and then they can come too!

A “Super Bonus” has come along. Margaret, Maggie and I have had the pleasure of meeting with Jocelyne, Marketing Manager, and Laurel, the Recreation programmer, from The Gardens to discuss possible activ-ities we could share, meaning we would have the opportunity to utilize some of the space there – as well as having folks from the Centre able to visit with those who live at The Gardens (and many of our members do). SO, Margaret has been very busy organizing! She was able to book Steve Wallace from the School of Driving in Victoria to speak with a focus on the seniors driving exami-nation. Roy & I attended a presentation at St. Stephen’s awhile ago and found it very worthwhile! The session will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 2nd. Whereas we only have

DISCOVERY COAST to CARIBOO CIRCLE TOUR

J uly 10: 33 folks boarded the bus and headed to Port Hardy for the long anticipated trip up the Chilcoton. We overnight-

ed at the beautiful new Kwa’lilas Hotel, enjoyed an excellent meal and the fabulous native décor. Off by ferry to Bella Bella early next morning and on to another BC ferry to Bella Coola. In spite of the 17 hour ferry trip that day, everyone enjoyed the spectacular scenery on Queen Charlotte Strait, the sea life and stops along the way. We spent two nights in Bella Coola. Our tour guide, Rene Mor-ton, rode along with us pointing out the Native and Norwegian history of the area with stops for lunch at the United Church, a tour through a fish smoking plant and a wonderful slide presen-tation by Michael Wigle, a well known Nature photographer. Departing Bella Coola for Williams Lake, Rene continued giving historical and current commentary on route to Tweedsmuir Pro-vincial Park. We learned about the Mackenzie Trail, visited the meeting grounds of the Ulgatcho and Nuxalk people where Coastal goods were traded with interior goods. We then headed up “the Hill” … a gravelled spectacular switch-back road leading into the coastal rain forest over rugged coast

Coastal Mountains & through Heckman Pass; lunch at Nimpo Lake. We arrived in Williams Lake that afternoon. Next morning off to Barkerville and back via Quesnel. A fun time enjoyed in Barkerville included rides on a Stage Coach and panning for gold. We then enjoyed a musical theatre performance by four actors who sang, danced and played various instruments….the young man at the piano was fantastic! We headed back to Wil-liams Lake and in the morning we’re off to Hat Creek Ranch where we enjoyed a guided tour of the road house and native village. Heading on to Pemberton … surprise number two was

being stopped at a slide and asked to turn back as the bus was too heavy to cross (which became a three hour detour!) We fi-nally arrived at Pemberton to overnight and head to Whistler in the morning, giving time to explore the village while some of the group rode the ’peak to peak’ Gondola...and then off to the ferry. We met some great people from Courtenay to Duncan, a lovely trip with perfect weather. Our driver, Jim, did a superb job at the wheel and thanks to Willie and Cathie for organizing this trip...it was a enjoyed by all. from Lila
