1. Call to Order The Chair called the meeting to order at 4:15pm. Caitlin McCutcheon was introduced as a new Student Senator and member of the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum (SSCC).

2. Confirmation of Agenda Item 5.3: “Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Post-Baccalaureate Name Change” was added under Pending Business

Moved by David Burns; seconded by Khairunissa Ali: THAT the agenda be confirmed as amended. Motion Carried

3. Approval of Minutes of October 5, 2016 Moved by Doug Fletcher; seconded by Linda Rogers: THAT the minutes of October 5, 2016 be approved. Motion Carried

4. Chair’s Report The Chair informed the committee that all items recommended at the October 5, 2016 SSCC meeting were approved by Senate. The next SSCC meeting is set for November 30, 2016 and a report from the Sub-committee on Writing Intensive Courses (SWIC) is expected.

David Burns was congratulated on his appointment as the Teaching Fellow for Learning Outcomes. In the spring, David will be invited to a discussion with the Subcommittee on Course Curriculum (SCC) regarding recommendations for updating the course learning outcomes information in the Course Outline Manual. .


5. Pending Business

5.1. SSCC Proposed Revisions to AC11: General Education in Degree Programs Policy The proposed revisions to Policy AC11 were presented. To resolve a contradiction noted at the October 5, 2016 SSCC meeting, section E.1 was re-written.

SSCC was encouraged to wait on recommending the AC11 Policy revision to Senate until it receives a copy inclusive of SWIC’s recommendations.

Moved by Doug Fletcher; Seconded by Jane Fee: THAT the motion to recommend the revisions to Policy AC11, General Education in Degree Programs, be postponed until the recommendations from the Subcommittee on Writing-Intensive Courses are presented to the committee.

Motion Carried It was noted that since KPU does not have post-baccalaureate level courses (the courses that comprise post-baccalaureate programs are undergraduate level), any references made to them in this matter should be removed.

5.2. Document Revision: Program Revision Form The revised Program Revision Form was presented.

Moved by Brenda Snaith; seconded by Linda Rogers: THAT the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum recommend approval of the revisions to the Program Revision Form to Senate. Requested Amendments:

Calendar entry section: • Remove the word “curricular” from both cells. • Clarify the instructions regarding what is to be placed in these cells (e.g., “Current

requirements with modifications” on the left cell). • Replace “in full” with “the entire applicable section where changes are being proposed”

Consultation Section: • Provide instructions to use the Curriculum Consultation Forms if the consultations are

more complex. The amendments were accepted by consensus.

5.3. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Post-Baccalaureate (BSN PB) Name Change Leeann Ring, Senator, Faculty of Health, informed the committee that, with the approval of the Ministry of Advanced Education, the Faculty of Health was in agreement regarding changing the BSN PB to “Bachelor of Science in Nursing Advanced Entry”.

6. Senate Sub-committee on Course Curriculum Report The Chair informed the committee that, at the request of the Dean, Faculty of Science and Horticulture, HSCI 1115 was removed from consideration and referred to the Sub-committee on Course Curriculum.

Chair’s Report

On November 21, 2016, Senate approved the following items from the November 2, 2016 meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum (SSCC):

• Course outline revisions and discontinuances • Program admission changes to the following programs:

o Certificate in Appliance Servicing o Citation in Piping

• Changes to the Program Revision Form Earlier this year, SSCC discussed expanding the scope of the work of its Subcommittee on BA Quantitative Courses (Q-committee) so that courses approved for quantitative (Q) status will not be limited to satisfying the Q-status for Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees. The committee passed a resolution to form a Quantitative Courses Working Group with the following mandate:

• To review the existing criteria for granting Q-status for courses and to update them if need be; • To consult with faculty members across all Faculties to determine if there is interest in adding a

quantitative requirement to other baccalaureate degrees (e.g., BBA, BSc, BASc, BHSc, BSN, BPN, Bachelor of Design, etc.), which would use the list of courses approved for Q-status to satisfy said requirement;

• To review the membership composition of the existing Q-committee to determine whether or not it needs to be expanded; and

• To bring forward recommendations to the Provost, SSCC and Senate. SSCC recommended that this work be completed by December 31, 2016. The Chair of the working group, Wayne Podrouzek, will be submitting a report at the end of December. The report will be presented to SSCC at its January 11, 2017 meeting (when the report from the Subcommittee on Writing-Intensive Courses will be presented).

Context & Background:

The Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum (SSCC) passed a resolution at its November 2nd meeting to postpone discussion of all aspects of general education in Policy AC11 until its Subcommittee on Writing-Intensive Courses (SWIC) presents its report to SSCC. SWIC received feedback from the Provost in early November, and the SWIC report was presented to the Council of Deans on November 17th for feedback. SWIC will be meeting on December 6th to discuss the feedback from the Provost and the Council of Deans before presenting its report to SSCC on January 11, 2017.

Resource Requirements:

During the week of April 25, 2017, SWIC will meet to evaluate courses for writing-intensive status using the criteria approved by Senate. The approved courses will be signed off and published to the Course Outline Library by April 30, 2017 so that they may be incorporated into the 2017-18 University Calendar for implementation on September 1, 2017.

Based on this timeline, we expect that the changes to Policy AC11 and the criteria for evaluating courses for W status could be approved by Senate on April 24, 2017. The list of courses approved for W status could also be implemented for September 1, 2017.

Nov. 17, 2016 Chair of SWIC presented the committee's report to the Council of Deans for feedback.

Dec. 6, 2016 SWIC meets to discuss the feedback from the Provost and the Council of Deans.

Jan. 11, 2017 SSCC reviews the SWIC report and finalizes its recommendations to the Provost for changes to

Policy AC11 and criteria for evaluating courses for writing-intensive (W) status.

Jan. 11, 2017 Chair of SSCC submits the committee's recommendations to the Provost (policy sponser) for

changes to Policy AC11, as well as criteria for evaluating courses for writing-intensive (W) status.

The final SWIC report will also be submitted.

Jan. 12, 2017 Provost endorses the recommendations and assigns a policy developer to amend Policy AC11.

Jan. 13, 2017 Post the proposed changes to Policy AC11 and the SWIC report on the policy blog by Jan. 13.

Feb. 24, 2017 If Policy AC11 and the SWIC report are posted on the policy blog on Jan. 13, then the 6-week

posting period will end on Feb. 24.

Week of Feb. 27 SWIC meets to draft responses to comments from the policy blog that are related to its report and

recommendations for changes to Policy AC11. This includes comments related to the criteria for

evaluating courses for W status.

Mar. 1, 2017 SSCC meets to draft responses to comments from the policy blog that are related to its

recommendations (not related to writing-intensive courses) for changes to Policy AC11.

Mar. 6, 2017 The responses from SWIC and SSCC are submitted to the Provost for endorsement.

Week of Mar. 13 With the Provost's endorsement, the responses from SWIC and SSCC are posted on the policy blog.

Week of Mar. 13 The policy developer amends Policy AC11 as may be required. The amended policy is presented to

the Provost for endorsement.

Apr. 5, 2017 The amended Policy AC11 is presented to SSCC for endorsement. SSCC also recommends approval

of the writing-intensive criteria to Senate.

Apr. 10, 2017 The amended Policy AC11 is presented to SSC Policy Review for endorsement and recommendation

to Senate.

Apr. 24, 2017 Senate approves the proposed changes to Policy AC11. Following this, Senate approves the criteria

for evaluating courses for W status.

Apr. 25-28, 2017 SWIC meets to evaluate courses for W status using the criteria approved by Senate.

Apr. 30, 2017 In order to be incorporated into the 2017-18 University Calendar for implementation on Sept. 1,

2017, all courses approved for W status by SWIC must be signed off by the Senate Vice Chair and

published to the Course Outline Library by Apr. 30, 2017.

The Senate Subcommittee on Course Curriculum (SCC) met on November 9, 2016 and recommended the courses in this report to SSCC.


The Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum (SSCC) receives course outlines from SCC and makes recommendations to Senate for final approval. SSCC reviews course outlines at a high level in support of the committee’s mandate in reviewing new programs and program revisions.

Consultations: The course outlines from the Faculty of Science and Horticulture and the Faculty

of Arts were approved by their respective Curriculum Committees, which have delegated authority from their Faculties to approve course outlines. The Deans/Associate Deans have signed off on all the course outlines submitted by their respective Faculties.


1. The new HSCI 4950, 4990, and 4995 courses are related to a proposed revision to the Bachelor of Science, Major and Honours in Health Science program that is on today’s SSCC agenda. 2. The request for discontinuing ASIA 2250 is related to a proposed revision to the Bachelor of Arts, Major and Minor in Asian Studies program that is on today’s SSCC agenda. 3. LANC 3450 and SPAN 3450 are cross-listed courses.

THAT the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum recommend approval of the revision to the Citation in Piping Foundation program and credential name to Senate for implementation on September 1, 2017.




Through various departmental discussions it has been determined that the program name “Piping Foundation” does not accurately reflect the program outcomes and we are requesting that the program name be revised to state: “Plumbing and Piping Foundations”, and credential name to be revised to “Citation in Plumbing and Piping Foundation”.

Consultations: Approval received from the Faculty of Trades and Technology Curriculum Committee (January 7, 2016), from Faculty Council (June 15, 2016) and from the Office of the Registrar (October 27, 2016).

1. Through feedback from the registrar’s office and by feedback from students attempting to enroll in the Piping program, this has resulted in a noticeable decline in enquiries and in enrollment into the Piping program. 2. With this change we anticipate an increase in enrollment and to better align with the ministry BC Skills for Jobs Blueprint by remaining on the top requested trades list. It will also solve any confusion that it is a multi-trade foundations program. 3. Aligning the credential name change with the program name change would be favourable from the student perspective.

Current Curricular Requirements

DESCRIPTION The BMMA Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts degree focuses is a four-year program focusing primarily on Western classical music while providing students with opportunities to explore jazz, pop, and world music. Practical courses, such as the Business of Music, Approaches to Music Education, and Psychophysiology of Music Performance, give this program an experiential dimension rarely found in traditional music programs.The program fosters students' creativity and versatility, equipping them to adapt to changing market demands and to apply learned theory and practice in a variety of cultural and service sectors. The Music program offers students two credentials options for their studies: 1. Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts degree. This is a selective-entry, four-year bachelor's degree program that is eight semesters in length consisting of 122 credits of coursework. 2. Music Diploma option. The A two-year diploma is embedded within the degree. It allows students who do not wish to pursue a degree in music to have an optional exit point after completion of lower-level requirements. The Diploma has six concentrations: General Studies, Comprehensive Studies, Guitar Performance, Orchestral Instrument Performance, Piano Performance and Vocal Performance. Prospective music students should attend an information session where all program and application procedures will be explained. For all instruments except piano, the standard of practical work expected at the time of audition is equivalent to Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Grade 6. A satisfactory score on the KPU Music Placement Test - The placement test assesses the knowledge and skill of the applicant in music theory, music history, and aural musicianship (i.e., ear training). At the November 2, 2016 meeting of the Senate Subcommittee on Course Curriculum (SCC), the committee reviewed HSCI 4950, 4990, and 4995 and recommend approval to the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum (SSCC).


The Biology department has made a minor change to the course name and number for the Senior Seminar (previously the Special Topics course). The department would also like to offer an Honours option to Health Science students, who have a keen interest and the ability to pursue 8 credits of Honours Thesis Project Courses.

The BSc in Health Science Honours program will include 2 semesters of Honours Thesis Project courses, which will be taken in lieu of the Senior Senimar course, as well as one upper level elective course. Students will be required to apply into the Honours option through the Biology Department, and they must meet a minimum Grade Point Average.

Rationale: Offering an Honours option to the Health Science Major degree allows students with a keen interest in pursuing research projects the option to so and acknowledging this extra accomplishment.

Current Curricular Requirements Currently each Arts Minor page of the KPU calendar includes wording which has the effect of binding each minor to KPU Bachelor of Arts Framework. This wording includes:

1. Minor Title – currently Subject: Bachelor of Arts Minor example, Anthropology: Bachelor of Arts Minor

2. The “Description” section of each Arts Minor page currently has no mention of what a minor is, or how it may be applied.

3. The “Admissions Requirements” section of each Arts Minor page currently reads: “Students pursuing a minor in Subject must be admitted to the Faculty of Arts.”

4. The “Curricular Requirements” section of each Arts Minor page currently reads: “Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete all requirements in the Bachelor of Arts Framework in addition to their major or minor program requirements”

5. The “Credential Awarded” section of each Arts Minor page currently reads: “Upon successful completion of the minor as part of a Bachelor of Arts program, transcripts will indicate a Minor in Subject”

Proposed Curricular Requirements The wording in the calendar which restricts Arts Minors to Bachelor of Arts degrees shall be changed as follows:

1. All Arts Minors titles will be changed from Subject: Bachelor of Arts Minor to Subject Minor. For example, the Anthropology: Bachelor of Arts Minor would become Anthropology Minor.

2. Under the “Description” heading in the Calendar, include a standard statement that the Minor may be applied toward any bachelor’s degree. (This description can be determined at a later date by the relevant governance bodies and/or the Registrar). Possible example: “This minor may be applied towards any KPU Bachelor Degree.”

3. The Admissions Requirements for all minors listed above would substitute “Students pursuing a minor in Subject must be admitted to the Faculty of Arts” would become “Students pursuing a minor in Subject must be admitted to KPU for undergraduate studies.”

4. Under Curricular Requirements, remove “Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete all requirements in the Bachelor of Arts Framework in addition to their major or minor program requirements.”

5. Credential Awarded, change the sentence “Upon successful completion of the minor as part of a Bachelor of Arts program, transcripts will indicate a Minor in Subject” to “Upon successful completion of the minor as part of a KPU Baccalaureate degree program, transcripts will indicate a Minor in Subject.”

Bachelor of Science Minor


Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science Minor in Mathematics

must be declared in a KPU Baccalaureate degree

program.admitted to the Faculty of Science and Horticulture.


Students pursuing this minor must declare their intention prior

General Requirements All students must meet the following minimum requirements

for a Bachelor of Science at KPU:

120 credits from a minimum of 40 courses (at least 3

credits each) at the 1100 level or higher.

45 credits from a minimum of 15 courses at the 3000

level or higher, including 9 credits at the 4000 level.

18 credits of breadth electives including:

o at least 12 credits from courses that are

offered outside the Faculty of Science &

Horticulture; and

o up to 6 credits from fields of science not

prescribed in the Major requirements; and

o 3 credits from a course at the 3000 level or

higher.


At least 50% of all courses for the BSc, and at least

66% of upper-level courses for the BSc, must be

completed at KPU.

Jennifer Au’s current 2-year term as Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum (SSCC) will end on August 31, 2017. Jennifer will not be running for re-election to serve for a second term. The election of committee Chair normally takes place at the April SSCC meeting, with the committee Chair beginning the following September. In order to allow for more overlap in the transitional period, the election of committee Chair will take place at the January 11, 2017 SSCC meeting.
