JaneWillsProfesssorofHumanGeography,QueenMary,UniversityofLondonJanewillprovideabriefhistoryofthelivingwagecampaignthatstartedinLondonin2001andwilllookatthemodeloforganisingdeployedanditsimplicationsforengaging,orotherwise,organisedlabour.
JennyChanLecturerinSociologyandChinaStudies,SchoolofInterdisciplinaryAreaStudiesJuniorResearchFellow,KelloggCollegeUniversityofOxford.Jenny’spresentationwilllookathowsocialscientistshaveassessedthefastexpansion,andcommercialization,ofChineseeducationundermarketreformssincethelate1970s,andhavedelvedspecificallyintothequalityofvocationalschoolteachingandclassroomlearning.Therehasbeen,however,scantattentiontostudentinternsastemporaryorcontingentworkersintheactualworkplacesetting.
JaniceFineAssociateProfessorinLaborStudiesandEmploymentRelationsattheSchoolofManagementandLaborRelations,RutgersUniversityJanice’spresentationwillfocusontheproblemofnoncompliancewithlabourstandardsinlow-wageworkrequiresseriousreconsiderationofaformalroleforworkersandworkers’organizationsingovernmentenforcementefforts.Routine,institutionalizedcollaborationsbetweentheseorganizationsandfederal,stateandlocalDepartmentsofLaborhasthepotentialtoaddressmanyofthegapsidentifiedingovernmenteffortstoenforcelaborstandardsinthelow-wagecontext.
