Centre of excellence for medical textiles (CoE – Meditech) has been established at SITRA, promoted by office of the Textile commissioner, Ministry of textiles, Government of India. SITRA provides testing facilities as per international standards and having manufacturing facilities for various medical textile products. It also provides product development and incubation facilities to entrepreneurs. Coating and lamination techniques are used to impart properties to Substrates which are not necessarily those naturally assumed by materials. Having widespread application across a range of technical textiles and other sectors, they increase functionality and durability as well as value. Functional properties can be imparted using a range of application methods, dictated by the materials being processed and the required outcome, whether they are applied as a coating or laminate is also determined by this criteria. The definition between the two is a technicality relating to the application method; generally coatings are applied to a fabric in their preparatory state, often in liquid form. Lamination requires the pre-preparation of a laminate membrane that is then applied to the textile. To impart better knowledge the seminar on coating and laminating Technologies Module I is organized at COE SITRA from 23rd to 27th September 2014.
