University 25 – Hamilton Old Boys 19

University came back from 13-0 down to beat Hamilton Old

Boys in the pouring rain at Fred Jones Park and secure second

spot after round robin play.

The win means University will host Hamilton Marist next week,

who finished third after a ‘who beat who last’ countback with Old

Boys. Has Catley Trophy winners Otorohanga will host Old Boys

at Island Reserve.

However early on it looked like Old Boys would upset their

visitors and possibly steal semi final home advantage.

After an even first quarter of an hour Old Boys halfback Kylem

O’Donnell opened the scoring when he caught the University

defence napping down the blindside from a five metre scrum.

Old Boys’ confidence continued to grow and, knowing a bonus

point win could see them leapfrog University on the table, turned

down several shots at goal in search of more tries.

They were rewarded when hooker Tyrone Te Ruruku barged

his way over the line for try number two.

As the rain continued to fall Old Boys had clearly adapted to

the conditions better, enjoying plenty of good field position

thanks to the sensible kicking game of first five Bryn Gatland.

Gatland added a penalty with five minutes left in the half to

stretch the lead to 13-0.

University found their feet just before the break and on the

back of some good territory fullback Damian McKenzie kicked

two penalties to narrow Old Boys’ halftime lead to 13-6.

Old Boys started strongly in the second spell but there was a

game changing moment when, against the run of play,

University first five Chauncy Edwardson snatched an intercept

and ran 60 metres to score.

McKenzie’s kicked the simple conversion and all of sudden the

scores were tied.

Gatland’s second penalty of the day shortly after restored Old

Boys lead but University were looking more dangerous as they

lifted their play considerably.

With 20 minutes left Old Boys repelled several University pick

and goes close to the line but when a loose ball spat out the side

of a ruck lock Will Mangos was on hand to dive over the line.

The superb fightback meant that the momentum was now all

with University and they looked the more likely to score again.

Some strong runs from the University forward pack was

finished off by prop Atu Moli for their third try of the day and

McKenzie’s conversion gave them a nine point buffer with 10

minutes remaining.

Old Boys got back within seven for a bonus point thanks to

another Gatland penalty but University were able to pin them in

their own half for the final few minutes to secure the win.

Otorohanga 7 – Te Awamutu Sports 6

Otorohanga were made to work hard to secure their top of the

table spot against Te Awamutu Sports at Island Reserve.

The visitors came out firing against their local rivals and two

first half penalties from wing Jarred Bayliss had Te Awamutu on

course for a dramatic upset.

But Otorohanga eventually found their way over the line mid-

way through the second half with a try to loose forward Jeremy

Iti. Centre Dylan Collier’s conversion put them in front and that

was how the scoreline remained.

Fraser Tech 5 – Hautapu 3

At Memorial Park in Cambridge there was another low scoring

affair with Fraser Tech edging past Hautapu.

The home side started well in the tough conditions and fought

their way to a 3-0 lead at halftime thanks to a penalty from first

five Liam Eldridge.

Tech finally got on the scoreboard in the second half with a try

to halfback Troy Lobendahn and they were able to hang on for a

hard fought win.

Morrinsville Sports 31 - Melville 5

Morrinsville Sports continued their fine late season form with a

convincing five tries to one win over Melville at Campbell Park.

Hooker Steve Lowe and wing Semisi Masirewa scored two

tries each with halfback Brad Weber also dotting down.

Melville’s first half try to wing Luke Masirewa was to be their

only scoring of the day.

Hamilton Marist 82 - Te Rapa 0

Hamilton Marist warmed up for the semi finals with a huge 14

tries to nil win over Te Rapa at Marist Park.

Wing Leigh Bristowe was the star of the day as he crossed the

line on six occasions which sees him leap to the top of the

competition’s leading try scorers.

Veteran midfielder Phil Mourits bagged a double while first five

Wharenui Hawera, the competitions leading point scorer, added

five conversions to take him past 180 points for the season.

Otorohanga became just the fourth country club to win the Haswell Catley Trophy as round robin champions for 2014 with a close win over Te Awamutu Sports. Other Rd 18 wins went to University, Fraser Tech, Morrinsville Sports and Hamilton Marist.
