Semester Schedule

Graduation Requirements

For Students Beginning Grade 10 in 2008 or later

Language, Communication and Expression.

3 language arts, one at each grade level

Arts Education

1 fine arts: art, dance, drama, or music

Science, Math,and Technology

2 mathematics 2 science (one from science, biology,

chemistry, or physics) 2 other from science, math or technology

Personal Development and Society

1 credit from Physically Active Living 11, Phys Ed 10, Phys Ed 11, Phys Ed 12 or Dance 11

Social Studies

1 Global Studies: global geography 12 or global history 12

1 Canadian Content Course: Mi’Kmaq 10, African Canadian Studies 11, Canadian History 11

Different Credit Types

Advanced

These courses are designed to meet the needs of students who have demonstrated an exceptional degree of academic ability or achievement.

Academic

These courses are designed for students who expect to enter college, university or other post-secondary institutions.

Open

These courses are not designed to meet the specific entrance requirements of any post-secondary institution. However, some institutions may accept individual courses as entrance requirements.

Graduation

These courses are designed for students who wish to obtain a graduation diploma with a view to proceeding to employment or some selected area of post-secondary study.

Course Offering-Grade 10

Students must choose the equivalent of eight (8) full courses

One should be a grade 11 course

Compulsory

ENGLISH:– English 10 (academic)– English 10 Plus (academic)

– Students taking English 10 Plus will receive two credits upon successful completion of this course. One is an English credit, the other is an elective credit.

Math

– Math 10 Plus (academic)

– Math Foundations 10 Plus (graduation)

– Math Essentials 10 (graduation)

Students taking Math 10 Plus or Math Foundations 10 Plus will receive two credits upon successful completion of these courses. One is a math credit; the other an elective credit.

Compulsory

SCIENCE:– Biology 11 (advanced)– Biology 11 (academic)– Science 10 (academic)– *Science 10A and Science 10B (academic)

*Students who choose Mi’Kmaq 10 are not required to take Canadian History 11 in grade 11 unless they are taking Histoire Du Canada 11 for their Integrated French certificate.

School Success

Attendance and participation play an integral part of successful study.

A required part of any course you choose will be regular attendance, class participation, and completion of assignments.

Effort and success go hand and hand.

Attendance

Daily attendance is required of all students. Absences may be excused by the school for good reason.

It’s the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to call the school within five days of the absence to excuse his/her child.

In the case of illness, the school reserves the right to insist on an excuse from a medical doctor.

Attendance

Where attendance, in the opinion of the school is not satisfactory, one of the following courses of action may follow:– Parental interview– Ineligible to write a term exam or Nova Scotia

provincial assessment.

Missed School Work

Being legitimately absent from school does not excuse you from the school work that was covered while you were absent.

It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on any missed school work

Missed School Work

If the student is absent for an extended length of time (two weeks) for exceptional medical reasons, work packages may be arranged for the student. In these exceptional cases contact the school for specific arrangements.

In most cases, the student will be expected to borrow notes and check with their teacher regarding missed assignments.
