School Success

Attendance and participation play an integral part of successful study.

A required part of any course you choose will be regular attendance, class participation, and completion of assignments.

Effort and success go hand and hand.

Page 28: Semestering At Glace Bay High Why Semestering? GThe changing context in which schools must operate GThe diverse needs of the students GThe dynamic.

Attendance

Daily attendance is required of all students. Absences may be excused by the school for good reason.

It’s the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to call the school within five days of the absence to excuse his/her child.

In the case of illness, the school reserves the right to insist on an excuse from a medical doctor.

Page 29: Semestering At Glace Bay High Why Semestering? GThe changing context in which schools must operate GThe diverse needs of the students GThe dynamic.

Attendance

Where attendance, in the opinion of the school is not satisfactory, one of the following courses of action may follow:– Parental interview– Ineligible to write a term exam or Nova Scotia

provincial assessment.

Missed School Work

Being legitimately absent from school does not excuse you from the school work that was covered while you were absent.

It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on any missed school work

Page 31: Semestering At Glace Bay High Why Semestering? GThe changing context in which schools must operate GThe diverse needs of the students GThe dynamic.

Missed School Work

If the student is absent for an extended length of time (two weeks) for exceptional medical reasons, work packages may be arranged for the student. In these exceptional cases contact the school for specific arrangements.

In most cases, the student will be expected to borrow notes and check with their teacher regarding missed assignments.
