Some (recent) Open Data Initiatives

• Making Public Data Public (UK): More access to Ordnance Survey maps from next year, http://bit.ly/3qTU9s

• Open Data Network (GER): Founded in October 2009, Berlin, http://opendata-network.org/

• data.gov (US): increase public access to high value, machine readable datasets, http://www.data.gov/ data.gov.uk

• Open Data Commons: set of legal ‘tools’ to help provide and use open data: http://www.opendatacommons.org/

Some (new) Linked Open Data Initiatives

• Linked Data Research Center: appointed to drive and lead the linked data research and development, http://linkeddata.deri.ie/

• data.nytimes.com: 5,000 people subject headings as linked open data under a CC BY license, http://data.nytimes.com/

• GoodRelations: standardized vocabulary for product, price, and company data, http://purl.org/goodrelations/

• oeGOV: Use small OWL ontologies to model recovery and deploy across all government, http://www.oegov.org/

From Open Data to Linked Data

heavily inspired by Leigh Dodds, Talishttp://www.slideshare.net/ldodds/web-integrated-data

Publish Data!

Organize it!

License it!

Use Standard Open Formats

Add a Web API!

Integrate with the Web

Identify things!

Link them together!

Use RDF to publish data & model!

Raw Data now!

Linked Data Design Issues

1. Use URIs as names for things 2. Use HTTP URIs so that

people can look up those names.

3. When someone looks up a URI, provide useful information, using the standards (RDF, SPARQL)

4. Include links to other URIs so that they can discover more things.
