PRINCIPAL COMMENTS: PAUL JORGENSEN

On our working bee during the holidays, we were able to get the two big jobs completed, however due to small amount of numbers we were not able to get the other eight smaller jobs completed. It was unfortunate that we were not able to get more families attend so that we could complete the jobs we wanted. We were lucky that we were able to have Daniel Markham with his machinery here for the Thursday which was a huge help in getting the running track done and also begin the work on the drainage and putting new softfall around the playground equipment. Thanks to Kaye Stockdale, Leigh Markham and Robert Amos for their work on spreading the softfall. Thanks also to Bronwyn Woodward who was able to pop in for an hour to help out even though she couldn’t be there for the day and also to Andrea Smee who came up when school came back to spread softfall as she couldn’t be there on the day either. All this helps get the jobs done.

A huge thank-you to Adam Leslie who was amazing putting in two full days work at the school. On the Thursday he was operating machinery helping Daniel and on the Friday building the retaining wall for the softfall. Without his fantastic efforts, we would not have achieved what we did.

The work done has made our school a safer place for our children to play. Thanks to all involved.

Our 3/4 Children have been having a great time at the Phillip Island Camp. I was able to attend on Thursday this week and watch them do the Giant Swing, Revolving Rock Wall and the Zip Wire activities. Luckily they were able to swap their penguin viewing night from Wednesday to Thursday because of rain. Thanks to Kelly Alexander for organising the camp and attending along with Dale Simmons and Kaye Stockdale. Also a big thanks to Jason Sutherland who was helping at the camp as well.

Preview for Foundation and Grade 1 students

Welcome to Term 4!

Next week we will be doing some work on the book ‘Horton hears a who’ in preparation for our musical. This week we read the book in class. Next week we will be watching the movie and making comparisons to the book. We will also be completing some writing activities on the story.

In Maths we will be focusing on the topics of place value, counting patterns and addition. At home, students could practise the quick recall of addition facts up to 10 and practise counting by 1s, 2s, 5s,10s, 3s and backwards by 1s from 30. We will be looking specially at continuing patterns and identifying what patterns are counting by. We have been focusing on identifying how many tens and ones in a number. For example – 25 is made up of 2 tens and 5 ones, or 20 and 5.

In reading, we will be looking at identifying and writing good sentences and revising the parts of a good sentence (ie. Capital letter, full stop, one main idea etc).

Our Library day is Friday. Please remind your child to pack their Library books.

Miss Waite and Miss Stockdale.

Welcome back Grade 2 and Grade 3 families!

The start to Term 4 has been quite interesting so far with the Grade 3 and Grade 4 Camp to Phillip Island. I wonder what kinds of animals they will have seen in the many diverse habitats around the coastline!

In Inquiry next week we will continue to explore the Globe and develop our skills using Atlases. Our focus will be locating countries on the 7 continents and noticing some of the flora and fauna native to each continent.

In Reading next week we will be focusing on reading non-fiction texts including travel brochures and texts about native Australian animals. Our CAFÉ strategy focus will be identifying key words that help us to locate and understand information texts as well as developing our note taking skills. When listening to your child read at home remind them to read the titles, sub-titles, glossary and information in text boxes to support their comprehension of

the texts they read.

In Writing next week students will be writing recounts. Students have all set their own learning goals to develop their writing, using the Writing Checklist. To support your child’s learning, you can ask them what their Writing Checklist goal is and what strategies they have planned to use to achieve their goal.

In Mathematics this week we have been revisiting the four operations as well as solving problems about money. This will continue into next week. To support your child’s learning, ask them to arrange Australian currency in order of value. If your child is up for the challenge ask them how much change they would receive from $20 if they spent $12.75 and which notes and coins it could be made up of.

We hope you all have a safe weekend and look forward to seeing you all next week!

Mark, Natalie and Kelly.

Preview 4/5/6 Duncan and Simmons

Welcome back to Term 4. The year is certainly rocketing on. We hope all of the Year 4 student enjoyed the Phillip Island camp, it was certainly action packed.

To prepare your child for next week’s Maths classes a board game of Battleships has been sent home. As part of learning we are learning about specifying a region on a map by using coordinates. The Year 5 & 6’s had a few lessons on this last week. To extend learning some students will learn about Cartesian Coordinate System. This link provides an interactive game that will give students a chance to develop their knowledge prior to classes.

We will also continue to practice computational skills.

In Writing, we will be learning about informative writing.

Our focus for Inquiry this term is Geography. Students will be developing their research techniques throughout this unit. The 5’s and 6’s will follow up their excursion and identify problems in the Churchill Township. During Week 3 we will gather more information by using research

techniques such as interviewing, drawing or photographing areas of concern.

Please continue to ensure your child reads at least 4 times per week. If your child is having trouble finding an engaging book, please talk to the teachers.

Maths Mates have been sent home to students who requested them. Students are expected to complete one sheet each week. Answers will be sent with the newsletter.
