Hack Attack or Just Lucky?Hi Guy,

I do not want to sound like one of “those people” who sees conspiracies everywhere, but I can’t help getting a suspicious, uncomfortable feeling at Bingo when certain “select people” who are much too friendly with the gaming staff walk away again and again with the biggest prizes of the night.

You will probably say that favoritism isn’t possible and that everything is computerized nowadays so nothing unfair is going on, but I have read plenty of stories about how easy it is for “hackers” and others who are good with computers to change how these machines operate. Would it really be so difficult for someone to “rig” the machine to favor certain numbers, and therefore select people, resulting in wins not being even and fair?

It just seems a little too coincidental for the winners to be the same folks again and again. If it keeps up, Bingo will only have this handful of “friendly favorites” left playing because everybody else will quit. Then where will the Bingo games be?RL, Minnesota

Hi RL,Let me begin by saying that part

of your concern is valid—hackers absolutely have made their presence felt in Bingo halls.

During a Bingo session in a hall in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada earlier this year, ball monitors suddenly began broadcasting an X-rated video. Scandalous! The incident was ultimately blamed on a prankster who hacked into new technology that had recently been installed at the Bingo hall. The culprit was never caught.

It’s important to note, however, that this episode had nothing to do with the Bingo console’s operation—the hacker simply found a way to bypass the console’s connection to the wall-mounted monitors and send a video signal to the monitors directly.

As for the Bingo console’s operation, no matter how digital it becomes, the balls in the windowed chamber remain actual, not virtual, and are still tumbled by a steady blast of air, extracted through a chute and removed by hand. A camera at the mouth of the chute shows the ball on the monitor as it comes up from the chamber.

It’s pretty tough to imagine espionage that could thwart such a system, or anyone willing to take a stab at it—especially considering that the goal is nabbing $100 bucks from 100 eyewitnesses in a Bingo hall.

As far as a Bingo operation assisting “friendly favorites,” you will need to explain to me how they know what numbers are on the favorites’ cards and how they get the winning balls to come up the chute. Magic wind? Magnets? Invisible wires? That’s pretty tricky stuff. —Guy Hi Guy,

I rely on the Bingo monitors when I play Bingo because I sometimes have trouble discerning the numbers when they are called over the loudspeaker. The volume is loud enough, but the electrical version of the caller’s voice sometimes gets garbled when I listen.

The reason I’m writing is that sometimes I’ll get to Bingo and the seats I need near the monitors are already taken. My eyesight isn’t the

best, so the distance from the monitors where I have to sit is very important. What would you suggest I do in order to get the seat I need?Paul M., Nevada

Hi Paul, My initial advice is quite simple:

Arrive at the Bingo hall early so you get the seating you need. If this means arriving an hour early, so be it. Just bring along a book or magazine or load a couple of digital games on your phone to play while you wait. Even better, take along a friend or family member and spend that pre-Bingo time catching up on what’s happening in your lives.

That said, you probably would also like some added insurance so that, regardless of when you arrive, you will be able to sit close to the monitors. In that case, I suggest that you might get yourself a doctor’s note explaining that you require special seating for medical reasons.

The note should help, but it should not be used as a weapon to push people around and get your way. If you share it with a Bingo worker or the manager, it will get them on your side and hopefully encourage them to help you find the seating arrangements you require. —Guy Hey guys! (And gals!) Lucky Lotto Newsn Big Lottery Winner Wastes No Time Claiming His PrizeA Win in Minn Jeffery Love of Elk River, Minnesota, loves the fact that he is a Lotto America winner of $21.6 million. He matched all five numbers drawn plus the Star Ball—16, 22, 32, 36, and 42, with Star Ball number 8—to win. Typically, big winners take months to get their financial plans in order before claiming a prize, (players have up to a year to claim a Lotto America jackpot) but Love showed up at the lottery offices in Roseville two days after the winning numbers were drawn. It had long been one of Love’s dreams to visit lottery headquarters. “I drive by the lottery office every day on my way to work and always say, ‘One day...one day,’” he said. This is Minnesota’s second Lotto America jackpot win. Along with Minnesota, Lotto America is played in 12 other states. It replaced Hot Lotto in 2017 and, like its predecessor, has a jackpot that grows as each drawing fails to produce a winner.

Facebook Tips Off Lotto Millionaire A woman is celebrating her $1 million Louisiana Lottery prize after being completely unaware she had won. Lala Singleton only remembered to check her ticket after a relative tagged her in a Facebook post that said the winner was from her hometown of Baton Rouge. Singleton, an occasional Powerball lottery player, couldn’t believe that her numbers matched those she needed for the jackpot. “Once I checked my ticket, I just flipped out!” she said. “I made my boss and coworkers double check.” Singleton plans to use the winnings to pay some bills and contribute to her children’s college funds, as well as donate to Jumpstart Your Heart, a nonprofit that raises awareness of heart conditions in athletes that can lead to sudden death.

Buddies Split $600,000-Plus Jackpot Two longtime friends decided that sharing a lottery ticket might improve their luck—and they were right. Robert Sopsich, 30, of Hartland, Michigan, and Dillan Dybilas, 20, of Ubly, Michigan, were having no luck playing Michigan Lottery instant games on their own so they decided to share a $20 Millionaire Maker ticket and split the winnings. The lucky duo ended up sharing way more than they could have imagined: $1 million. “We’d each been buying tickets but hadn’t won much, so we decided to put our money together,” Sopsich said. “We stopped and bought a couple tickets last week and when we got back in the truck, started scratching them off. When I saw the ‘1MIL’ symbol it was like lightning going through my body.” Each received roughly $317,000 before taxes, according to the Michigan Lottery.

Lottery Winner Loses Court Battle Even though Amir Massihzadeh of Boulder, Colorado, was the only legitimate winner of a Colorado Lotto jackpot worth $4.8 million in 2005, he’s not eligible to claim the full winnings, the Colorado Court of Appeals recently ruled. Massihzadeh, one of three ticket holders to win that jackpot, accepted his prize of $568,990, after taxes. But 10 years later, a criminal investigation exposed a scheme to rig lotteries across state lines, and officials determined that the other two winning tickets that shared the same numbers as Massihzadeh’s were fraudulent. Although at least two of the men involved in the scheme were convicted and ordered to repay their prizes, the Colorado Lottery refused to award the full jackpot to Massihzadeh, saying he was locked into a contract when he signed the original ticket to claim his third of the jackpot.

Music Video Features Bingo HallRock group Swmrs released a new video for their single Lose Lose Lose which features the quartet piling into a car and driving to a local community Bingo hall where they take the stage and perform. Beer with Your Bingo? The North Carolina House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the creation of a state Gaming Commission to oversee the lottery and other gaming enterprises, in addition to making some changes to state liquor laws, including allowing alcohol to be sold in Bingo parlors. The Gaming Commission would assume control of the North Carolina Education Lottery and would also oversee Bingo operations, raffles and boxing matches held in the state, and would be responsible for conducting background checks on operators, regulating event advertising and enforcing other rules. The liquor law part of the bill included provisions that would allow alcohol sales at Bingo parlors and fortified wine sales at sports and entertainment events, among other venues.

Bingo Game Supports TourismThis summer, visitors to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, were encouraged to explore the city’s historic downtown district by playing “Hopkinsville Bingo: Summer in the City,” a month-long program that rewarded participants for connecting with the downtown community. The program was created through a partnership between The Downtown Renaissance District, Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library, the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County and The Pennyroyal Arts Council. Squares on specially designed Bingo cards included a variety of activities such as shopping, eating at a local restaurant, taking selfies and attending downtown events. To play the game, participants completed all activities on their cards then submitted them to the local library for a prize drawing.

Venting Before BingoIt’s time for the children to be

thinking of the start of school and I assure you teachers are thinking of it, too. It should be a happy and excit-ing time for anyone connected with school. When I entered the teaching profession in 1953, we didn’t worry about how to prepare the children for a school shooting. How do we teach them the value of honesty, obedience and respect for their parents and their elders? Many teachers today are attending a conference looking for the answers to these very questions. I’d gladly give up a Bingo game or two, to attend one of them. I would bring up the matter of the Ten Command-ments. They made sense for the times of Moses, for our times and for all the times in between. They made so much sense that many civilizations includ-ing our own based their laws on the Ten Commandments.

So why, I wonder, do we put a person in prison for stealing, and fire a teacher who teaches, “Thou shalt not steal?” Why do we execute people for murder yet forbid our schools and courtrooms from posting “Thou

shalt not kill”? Why do we cringe at the foul language coming from the mouths of children as they exit the school bus? Would a teacher dare to discuss the commandment that deals with such things. It surely is possible to teach the principles without pro-moting his or her personal religious beliefs.

Ah yes, the conveying of moral ideals is the duty and privilege of parents, but that parental guidance should be reinforced in the classroom where the child spends the larger part of his or her day with a teacher that has been trained to teach.

About once a year I like to get on my soapbox. So far my publisher lets me get away with it, but my space is limited. I feel better now for these moments of venting. I am off to Bingo now and I will be kind to all I meet. If they give me more papers than I paid for I will do the right thing. I won’t say any naughty words or attack the caller if I don’t win. And if some woman’s car won’t start when it’s time to leave, I’ll stick around and make sure she is safe waiting for help. On the way home I’ll say a little prayer in appreciation for all those good teachers in grade school who taught me the essence of the Ten Com-mandments and never tried to sign me up in their church.

What’s NeWs iN NevadaLONG CONTRACTS GET SHORTERAfter Celine Dion’s highly successful “residency” at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (a run that became the Number One show on the continent) it would appear that future “residency” plans for other artists are not as ambitious. Dion’s long run earned half-a-million dollars a year. It saw performances from 2011 to 2019. Several stars have indicated that they would like to stage a “long” run in Las Vegas, but not as long as Dion did at Caesars. They have a different idea of “residency.”

SPEAKING OF ‘RESIDENCY’Memories are still alive of the days when Elvis Presley “invaded” Las Vegas and stayed for a while. According to published reports, Elvis–complete with traveling back-up band, two vocal groups and a full orchestra–made his Vegas debut at the former International Hotel (now the Westgate) fifty years ago this summer. He stayed for a month. Now, the highlights of those performances will soon be released on a multi-CD set. Eleven of the Elvis shows are contained in their entirety. A 52-page booklet is included.

‘LA CAVE’ EXPANSION COMPLETEDIts official name is the La Cave Wine & Food Hideaway at the Wynn and it’s just completed a million-plus-dollar expansion. The new facility is double the size of the previous venue, and has a larger garden lounge. The garden area overlooks the Wynn pool area. It is now partially enclosed by

what is being called a “living wall,” which is made of plant life.EAST TROPICANA REHABAccording to official reports, a planned ten-and-a-half-million dollar upgrade to always-busy East Tropicana Avenue will begin soon. The improvements will take place in a long stretch between Maryland Parkway and Boulder Highway. New pavement will be laid and the median islands will be reconfigured in the project. Luckily, for tourists, the work will be done on overnights.

VENERABLE HOTEL CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARYIt was the summer of 1969 when ground was broken for the old International Hotel in Las Vegas. The facility featured the then-tallest building in Nevada (30 floors) and a 1,500-room hotel. In addition, the venue offered the largest casino in the state. Hilton bought the property in 1971 and turned it into the largest-at-the-time hotel in the world. The facility, now called the Westgate, recently staged a big 50th anniversary celebration.

BIG WIN FOR THREE-CARD PLAYERAccording to a press release (via Twitter) from Caesars Palace, a visitor to Vegas has won $1.5 million playing Three Card Poker. According to the statement, the player was in shock after finding out what the pay-off was. The win marked the seventh table game jackpot of $1 million or more at Caesars properties in Nevada in the past nine months.

Bingo Binge Before Retirement?Dear Aunt Bingo:

I have a book of Bingo gift certificates from a big local Bingo center I have gone to for many years.

Recently my husband and I retired, and we are moving away soon to make our vacation home our permanent home. I took my book of certificates to the Bingo and asked to cash them in because I would not have a chance to use them all before we left. The people in charge said the certificates were not refundable, even though they have a cash value printed right on them. Do you think this is right? Any suggestions on what I should do about this?Tina G., Connecticut

Dear Tina:Most retailers who offer gift cards

and gift certificates have a list of exclusions that go along with them, and right at the top of the list is that the cards/certificates cannot be redeemed for cash, but may only be used for the purchase of goods and services. (I am actually quite surprised this isn’t printed somewhere in your certificated book!)

While you can’t get cash back on them, you might consider spreading a little cheer by gifting them to a family member or friend, selling them at a

discount to another player, or perhaps donating them to a charity (and possibly getting a tax deduction for your gift).

Then again, there’s always the option of gathering together a few friends and binge-Bingoing your way through them before you leave town. What a fun way to begin retirement! —Aunt Bingo

Dear Aunt Bingo:I’m curious if there are regulations

that determine the age limit of people who play Bingo. Specifically, I am talking about children in Bingo halls.

I think kids should not be allowed at Bingo for two reasons.

Foremost, I believe it is not good for them to be around gambling at such a young age. And Bingo is gambling! We all know that there is a definite physical/mental reaction when a player gets close to winning or wins. If kids are exposed to this same physical experience, might it not lead to potential addiction down the road?

The second reason is a little more selfish: I find it hard to concentrate on my Bingo when there are young children sitting near me making noise and being bothersome.

If a parent has not learned to control their kids, the last thing they should do is take them to a public place like a Bingo hall and expect those kids to sit still for hours on end while mom/dad plays. Kids want to be kids and sitting still in a chair for a long time is not what kids want to do!

I think there should be a national law banning anyone below the age of 18 or even 21 from attending Bingo halls, casinos, racetracks and anywhere else gambling takes place.Concerned Adult, Arizona

Dear Concerned:We receive letters on this topic

regularly, and yours hits on the two key issues that come up most: Should children be permitted in Bingo halls to play Bingo, and should kids be allowed in Bingo halls because children tend to be fussy and noisy.

As a kid who grew up playing Bingo, I found it a fun pastime that I continue to enjoy as an adult. As such, I have no problem with young people being allowed in Bingo halls to play. That

said, I understand that many people do not agree with this, and that some states have regulations that ban young people of various ages from Bingo halls. I respect lawmakers’ desire to have such regulations and abide by whatever the law states.

Kids who are not playing Bingo and who are well behaved are certainly welcome at my Bingo table. But the minute they start acting up they need to go. —Aunt Bingo

Bingo Bugle World Championshipn Have Fun With Friends and Win on the Bingo Cruise!By Jeffrey Charboneau

Special to the Bingo BugleFive years ago, Willow Rouben, 52,

of Louisville, Kentucky, received an invitation from her best friend, Angie Smith, to join her on a cruise vacation. But this was to be no ordinary cruise. It was the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise, which Angie had been on many times before.

“I really knew nothing about it, except that Angie really enjoyed herself,” Willow says. “I’d been on cruises before and liked the experience, and I’m a big Bingo fan—although I have a pretty busy life and only get to play about once a month or so. It definitely was worth a try.”

Since that first Bingo Tournament Cruise experience, Willow has gone on three more, and this November will board her fifth consecutive Carnival Cruiseliner as a World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise participant.

“It’s a great vacation,” says Willow, who is a two-time Tournament winner of $1,200 and $400. “The cruise is fun and relaxing, and so is the Bingo Tournament. My favorite part is the shore excursions and tours.”

Angie uses a cane—so the women typically opt for the lighter excursions—bus tours, boat rides, dining experiences—of which there are many. “If we stop at a port where I’ve toured before, I may stay onboard and

have a spa day or chill on the deck by the pool while the majority of people are taking tours,” Willow says. “It is all about relaxing.”

At home, Willow leads a busy life as a tax accountant, chief financial officer/business consultant for hire, and co-owner of several small businesses. “That’s why a vacation for me is all about having fun and taking it easy,” she says. “The Bingo Cruise is perfect for that. There’s a good combination of structured and unstructured activities to pick and choose from.”

The 31st Annual World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise departs November 9, 2019, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and sails for eight-days through the southern Caribbean with visits to the tropical ports of Grand Turk; La Romana, Dominican Republic; Curaçao; and Aruba.

Between stops, players participate in marathon Bingo and optional Sizzling Slots, and Bingo Bugle Blackjack tournaments—which together will award more than $100,000 in cash prizes. The top winner of the Bingo Tournament earns the title of Bingo Grand Champion and free passage for two aboard the following year’s Bingo Tournament Cruise.

Road Trip?Let’s Go!

Kate and I took off for a short driving trip to Montana. We had no particular destination in mind—just driving, enjoying the scenery and life. But, of course, one of the first things we came across was a casino—one that we had never been to, so we had to stop and see what it had to offer.

A Bingo game was just starting in the front corner of the building and it featured doubles. We had no idea what that meant, but quickly did buy-ins and sat down to play. It turned out doubles meant that any game called meant you had to get double the win to win. The first was a straight Bingo, which meant you had to have two, which made the game last longer and turned out to be more fun in the long run.

Kate was on for the very first game and that was exciting, but she didn’t win. We played two games and then another double came up. This time it was four in a corner and took a long time before someone won.

Kate struck up a conversation with

the players nearest us and learned they, too, were just out driving for the day, had seen the casino and stopped to play. They were from Idaho, their names were Lorna and Jack and they loved casinos as much as we did. They had a code message between them. It was “let’s go” and it applied to all things they did, like meals out, road trips and big purchases. They turned out to be so much fun, we knew we had made new friends.

At intermission Kate treated us all to a drink—coffee for them, tea for me. I have gone off coffee. I figure I’ve drunk my share in my lifetime and it now tastes pretty vile, but others enjoy it so what the heck.

Into the second half, we had more doubles coming up—a diagonal was first and I was on for it. Then Jack was also on and our competition was more fun than the whole game. I chanted the number I needed—then so did he and when someone else won we laughed and laughed together.

So our great good time went for the rest of the day. How lucky, I thought, that we had run across this lovely, compatible couple. They would surely come to visit us and we them and be friends forever.

Then came the last game of the day. It was a double bingo plus one line and all that constituted a blackout. There was no on-the-way game, so we settled in for a rather long session.

Suddenly Jack got hiccups. There was nothing apparent that set them off. They just started and appeared to be going on indefinitely. We tried all the recommended cures—holding breath, drinking from the wrong side of the glass, a quick scare—nothing worked.

“Switch cards with me,” I demanded suddenly. “Don’t argue—just switch.” I didn’t really know what I was doing, but something drastic had to happen and right now.

Jack handed me his cards reluctantly. “I don’t know what this is all about,” he said, handing me his card, but his hiccups had stopped and that was what I was counting on.

The next number was his. We saw it in the screen and then held our breath to see how many other winners there were. And there were no others! Jack had won alone. We hugged each other and carefully handed the card to the attendant to check.

“And all without the hiccups,” I said happily.

Honor Flights Needs Our Help

The number of World War II veterans topped 16 million during the war. Now there are fewer than half a million still alive, all in their 80s and 90s. We’re losing over 300 WWII veterans each day. Most of them have never seen the memorial in Washington, D.C., that was built in their honor.

Honor Flights Network, a nonprofit, works to change that. Since 2010, it has escorted 222,133 veterans to see the memorial, at no cost to the veteran. Last year HFN took 21,000 veterans to Washington. The one-day trips leave from a “hub” in most states and fly to Washington, where they visit the memorial dedicated to them, as well as the Vietnam and Korean memorials. These trips are scheduled multiple times a year.

But it takes money and volunteers (guardian escorts) to pull it off, and there are over 38,000 veterans on a wait list. We’re running out of time to get all the vets to Washington who want to go.

There are programs to help more veterans get there. The Solo program is for those who have friends and family who can fund the air trip and hotel for one to three days. The Lone Eagle program is for veterans who are not near an airport hub. Once in Washington, the veteran and his escort will join the main group for all their activities. In addition, Honor Flights has expanded to include Korean War and Vietnam War veterans.

If you can send money, please do. The address is Honor Flight, Inc., 175 South Tuttle Road, Springfield, OH 45505, or donate at www.honorflight.org. (Don’t miss the video on the website).

If you want information or can serve as an escort, call Honor Flight at 937-521-2400, or Jane Julian at 614-558-6220. If you have any medical experience, that’s a bonus, but there are many roles you can fill.© 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Volunteer, and Play to Save Bingo

Some months ago, one of the smaller, independent Bingo halls in Las Vegas nearly dropped Bingo. Originally, there were only three sessions a night at the hall. This was the casino where I got the “Bingo Bug” the first time I lived in Las Vegas. Originally, the venue had only three sessions a night. It had no other choice. It shared an area with the casino’s Sports & Race Book and had to play “musical chairs” with that activity.

Then, in 2002 an addition was made to the casino and a full-sized Bingo room was added. Soon, Bingo was being called from morning until night. Now, at last check, the hall has reduced its Bingo games to only four a day: 11am, 1pm, 7pm and 9pm. On weekends, though, two more sessions are added.

The closing of Bingo halls and the cutbacks on games each day is symptomatic of what is happening to Bingo in some areas. Even in the United Kingdom, where Bingo (since the Second World War) has become an important part of life for many, some halls have closed. One example is the venerable Mecca Bingo Hall in

London. Before its recent closing, it was a place of good times, heckling and a lot of kibitzing between players.

Like many Bingo venues in England, the Mecca was once a movie theater. In the 1950s when television started motivating people to stay home and NOT go to the cinema, thousands of theaters closed their doors. Many were converted to Bingo houses.

Here in the States, a huge and very popular Bingo venue in Lafayette, Louisiana, closed in the past year. The hall was called Metro Bingo. For a long time, it was a staple just off Interstate 49 in that city. When the hall closed just before Christmas of last year, there were rumors that it would be replaced…eventually.

The new venue for the game we all love best is opening this year in Lafayette. Johnston Street Bingo is scheduled to open in the former Crystal Cottage building. The new owners are planning major renovations to the old facility. So, Bingo IS alive and well in most places, but in some, even in Las Vegas, we are seeing cutbacks. In Lafayette, Louisiana, it was “saved, in the nick of time.”

There is a temptation to say: “Well, that’s the way it goes. You win some, you lose some.” But, if you really love Bingo, you can’t share in that attitude. It is the customers (and in most states the volunteers) who keep Bingo alive. And, the customers and the volunteers are US.
