This image illustrates how our product will be successful as from previous productions the use of the woods as an location is conventional for this genre. This will then lead on to using low key lighting within our trailer which again shows to the successfully used in both ours and previous productions as it adds to the horror of the story/genre and would portray this horror through the use of darkness.

These two images help illustrate us following correct conventions of this horror genre. This is because we intend to use an establishing shot to set the scene. In the Conjuring they have used it to enable the audience to locate where the horror originates from and therefore this will be portrayed in our horror trailer. The use of close ups within the trailer will be an essential part that we will use as we want emotion to be a key feature in our story. Within the Conjuring they have used several close ups to show the impact on which the horror is having on each individual character and this therefore allows the audience to connect with certain characters. From using this in our production it will mean that our audience will feel involved and encouraged within the film as our characters will be of the same and therefore would want to go and watch the film as it will be formal and direct to them.

This image shows that the props we will use are common for most people around the target audiences age. This prop will illustrate to the audience the type of ages of the characters & make it clear to them what the storyline is about. This is also clear in the Conjuring as they use a toy which is associated with children. This relates to the characters within the film as being of a young age, but also relates to the storyline as when they are being haunted it is by a child. This impacts the audience as they will engage with the film as they feel connected with the characters.

These photos demonstrate that we are following typical conventions for costumes types within our trailer. In the Conjuring they use the colours black and white for those who are linked with the horror. This is because it suggests danger and tension to the audience as something bad may happen. This will be apparent within our trailer as the dark figure will be wearing the colour black so they can originate from the low key lighting creating a fearing scene & which helps connote danger as that is what black represents. We also intend to use casual clothing for the young characters so the audience will be able to relate to the characters. This is apparent in the Conjuring to suggest normality to the story & makes the story more realistic as it is based around a normal family.

These images show that we have implemented/ plan to use an establishing shot to set the scene for the audience and for the characters in the scene. This is shown also to be used in the Conjuring trailer as it allows the audience to become familiar with the surroundings that the characters are in. The use of an establishing shot will shot the woods that we will use to be isolated and silent which will help create an emotion from the audience where they will fear for what is in the woods and carry on watching the trailer/film. The timing which they have used is around 2/3 sounds which is a time which we have based ours around as it will introduce the surroundings but will quickly move the trailer on the upcoming story.

This image shows that we have used one of the most common conventions of this genre as being a close up. This allows us to introduce the characters to the story and to the audience watching. This is used within the Conjuring to show the young characters within the film. This will allow the audience to become clear of the ages and we either choose to watch or not watch it based on their age. By us using close ups will mean that our product will be successful as we will encourage the target audience in with our young characters and continuously use this shot to show the impact of the horror on the individuals. The close ups within mine and the Conjuring trailers last about 2/3 seconds which is also planned for our production. This is because it needs to be quick but yet still show the emotion/reaction of the characters clearly.

These two images show that a previous film has used a close up to help show the impact that the horror is having on the individual. We are also using this type of shot to help show the emotion and feelings that the character is experiencing. This will be a successful component as it will mean that the audience will be able to get direct emotion from the characters. This will help create tension within the different scenes as the audience wont know that is coming next. However it will also allow the audience to feel connected with the characters in the film and therefore sympathise with them. This is shown in the image of the Conjuring as the young girl looks worn out and scared and would evoke sympathy from the audience as they would be able to associate themselves with this character and feel her emotion.

Script

From comparing my script to other previous horror productions it is clear that our trailer is limited to the amount of dialogue that we have across our six scenes. This is because ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘The Exorcist’ have a larger storyline and more characters to what we have meaning that we will lose a lot of dialogue. Our trailer may lack the convention of dialogue however there is enough dialogue to produce to the audience for them to understand the storyline and for the emotions to be obvious to them when watching the film. Regardless of the lack of dialogue our trailer will make up for it with the loud & tense background music which will run throughout and the use of unexpected sound effects which will a create a sense of danger and tension for characters in the scene and the audience that are watching. This is what will make our production successful as you don’t have to use the dialogue to grip the audience to your trailer but by the use of music and sound effects will create a larger impact on their experience. Meaning overall that our production will be more successful as for the consistent use of sound effects and music to convey the horror genre and horror storyline & effect not only the characters emotions but the audiences as well.

These screen shots from the film ‘The Conjuring’, compared to the cast film strip of our characters helps show that we are using a correct convention for this genre. This is because our characters are of similar ages to those used in the Conjuring film. This will mean that our production will be successful as we are using characters which are appropriate for our target audience. They are of the right age of who would go camping, which therefore relates to our storyline and will make our storyline more realistic as this is what we expect our characters ages to do. This will be successful as our audience will be able to connect with the characters and associate themselves with them as they are of the same age and will experience the same emotions and feelings as them. This will mean that they will feel encouraged into watching the film and involved throughout as they could experience their emotions first hand. The shots of the Conjuring also shows the costumes which will be suited to the genre. This takes form of casual clothing & slightly dirty face for the young characters. This will be apparent within our trailer as we will use casual clothing and make the faces of our young characters slightly dirty to show the real impact that the horror is having on them.

When I compare our font ideas to other previous ancillary planning it is clear that ours don’t match completely to other productions. This is clear through ‘The Exorcist’ font. This is because it is a bold font but is quite plain to look at. Having said this, it still has the ability to stand out above the dark coloured background which is a feature that I intend to focus on in my own production work. This will mean that our ancillary planning will be successful as bold font allows this feature to stand out and grab the audiences attention, meaning that our production will be successful when using bold font. The font used on the ‘Friday the 13 th’ poster helps relate to our font ideas as the font isn’t as plain and simple as the one used on ‘The Exorcist’. It gives the impression of it being broken/incomplete which would relate closely to the storylines of the horror genre to be ‘broken’ or ‘damaged’. This is the impression that we want to create for our ancillary production as we will be able to show the danger which will come from our storyline and this will be immediately demonstrated by our use of font. This will make our product successful as the audience will already know the background of our storyline and will therefore watch the trailer/film to find out what actually happens. By comparing the use of fonts on previous fonts I realise that our font ideas lack consideration of colour to make it stand out on our production. This will mean that we will use colour on our fonts so we are able to closely replicate other horror genre production. I will do this as we want to make the genre clear to our audience and make them essential features stand out to grab the attention of our audience.

By comparing my ancillary production ideas to previous horror genre productions it will mean that we are able to identify whether it is conventional to the genre. From looking at ‘The Exorcist’ it is clear that we are following the right conventions due to the title featured underneath the main image. This makes the poster eye catching to the audience as the main image is the first feature to grab your attention and then the bright coloured title underneath. By using the route of the eye has meant that it has allowed the most important features to stand out to the audience and illustrate the genre to them. This shows that our production will be successful as we plan to use the route of the eye to focus our audiences eye on the main image/character & then on the title of our film. This will mean that the genre is obvious from the beginning and the storyline is clear to the audience. This will encourage them to watch the film as the poster would sell the story effectively by the use of the large image and attracting font. By using a sentence at the top to describe the film will be successful as it has been used previously on ‘The Exorcist’ poster. This will mean that the audience will have an personal insight into the film from the comments of others. This would provide them with important information for them to then choose whether or not to watch the film. By using this gripping sentence will allow us to introduce the horror to the audience and make the genre obvious to the audience which is something I want to make clear from the start. Finally the use of the dark background will mean that the ancillary products will be closely linked to the trailer as we will use low key lighting throughout the trailer & darkness on our products. This will be successful as the audience will realise they are linked & if they liked the trailer than they will buy the ancillary products for the film.
