01 SWIMMING POOL AND MULTIPURPOSE SPACEUrban Limits and Continuities | Qualification of Infrastructure’s Idle Spaces
*Master’s Degree Final Project
CAMPOLIDE | LISBON | PT | 12500m2 2011|2012 | TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF LISBON | FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
This work consists in a reflection about urban systems which arrange the city and how the global decisions trans-
form the dynamics of the local spaces. That reflection is materialized in an urban and architectonic proposal for
the area of Campolide, which relates to the existing infrastructure – highway and railway.
Taking the urban Infrastructure’s Idle Spaces as a purpose, a critical reflection is developed about the ration-
alization of network organized cities, which, based on the importance given to these circulation systems, gave
origin to new concepts of scale, distance and time, conceiving a city that stands on individual spaces-time.
Facing an uncharacterized city, where monofunctional urban spaces that disintegrate the urban complexity –
and, by consequence, the people - are promoted, the challenge consists in developing an intervention that
transforms these results in collective opportunities, contributing to the wealth and humanization of the cities as
places for gathering and social exchanges.
The explored topics are therefore the guides for the definition of the place and the program of the intervention
project, which constitutes a Swimming Pool Complex and a Multipurpose Space, which seeks to give a practical
answers to the needs of its nearby surroundings, and simultaneously to the city of Lisbon.
And the continuity of the process is crucial. Continuity is life. LERNER, Jaime – Acupuntura Urbana. 4ªEdição. Rio de Janeiro: Record, 2010. pp.38
Original quote: “E a continuidade do processo é fundamental. Continuidade é vida.”

PORT AU PRINCE | HAITI | 3200m2 2010 | TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF PRAGUE (CZ) | FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
With the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, when great areas of the country were devastated, and especially its capital -
Port au Prince, came the handle for the intervention ‘extreme building on an extreme location’. The first step was
to choose the material, the bamboo, since its use in the construction of new equipments can solve the main local
constraints: the deforestation, high probability of earthquakes and floods, and the thin economic resources. This
complex consists of an area for bamboo learning and plantation, a dining area, while it is also a meeting for the
population and a school (the project chosen for development).

03 AUDIO DIG | MUSIC SPACESIntervention on a Small Plot in a City Center
*Project Selected for the Top 20 works in the Technical University of Prague, 2009/2010
TEMPLOVA STREET | PRAGUE| CZ | 90m2 2009|2010 | TECHNICAL UNIVERSIT Y OF PRAGUE | FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
A challenge in the center of Prague, located in the axis of the Old Town Square. One of the main constraints and
at the same time one of the starting points of the plot was its small area (90m2). Another key aspect in the design
of the project was to develop an individual program. The chosen concept proposes an alternative way to see,
hear, feel and play music. Due to the small size of the plot, the project develops inevitably in height. Following the
idea of a massive block, several music boxes were placed at different levels, like small digging niches, whose
dimensions were thought for the use of certain instruments. The different shapes and sizes of the Music Boxes
create different projections on the exterior facade. Natural light is explored in order to create the underground
feeling, emphasized by the contrast of materials between the wood (with acoustic proprieties) on the interior of
the rooms, and concrete on the outside.

04 COLLECTIVE HOUSINGMulti-Housing Blocks in the City | Dealing with an Existing Old Building
AJUDA | LISBON | PT | 6200m2 2010 | TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF LISBON | FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
The project is located on the plot of an old mansion, built in the end of the nineteenth century. The plot is pre-
sented with two different levels, being borded by two roads, one of them being the main axe of the neighborhood.
With this in mind, the housing block was located on the opposite side of the plot, leaving this direct connection
with the main axe to connect for the spaces intended for commerce and recreation. The solid housing block is
characterized by recesses along its volume, respecting the areas imposed by the program, so that the volumet-
ric proportions of the pre-existing building are kept. There are also two courtyards designed in its interior, which
are at the same time the entrances for the two buildings of the housing block. This way, all rooms will be provided
with natural light and cross ventilation.

*In collaboration with Eline Vooijs, Inês Mateus and Renato Monteiro
PALMA ISLAND | CANARY ISLANDS | SP | 30m2 2009 | TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF LISBON | FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
Beginning with a contest of Consentino, where the purpose was to design an architectural space from a con-
ceptual overview in order to promote the investigation on new concepts of space, materials and constructive
systems that will define them, this project developed research into the typology of the living space towards the
design of an individual residence for the Director of the Institute of Astrophysics in the Canary Island.
